"Beautiful hotel, wonderful stay but the hidden charges and aftermath were HORRIBLE!"

The Don CeSar Hotel is a beautiful historic hotel with beautiful beaches, and beautiful rooms. However, the morning of checkout, I received a call from my bank asking about excessive charges from the hotel on my card. To my dismay, the hotel had charged my card three times with one charge was over 300 dollars. I spoke with the front desk and they apologized and reported to me that the would fix the charges. However, to my dismay, they did not fix the charges and on my drive home I spent 3 hours on the phone with the hotel and the bank trying to get this rectified. Not to mention, I was placed on hold for 15-20 minutes just trying to get in touch with someone. The manager was very apologetic and reported that her IT department was looking into why my card was charged erroneously and she comped me for one day of the resort fee and a bottle of wine but the whole aftermath experience really soured my trip. I would recommend the hotel as it is beautiful but I would pay close attention to all of the extra fees not included in the reservation( daily resort fee and parking fees) before booking. If you do decide to stay there, I would pay extra close attention to charges on your card and would not recommend having anything billed to the room and pay directly as I am still not certain all of the charges were accurate.

"Beach was the highlight"

Upgraded for a gulf view and our experience was hampered by our balcony extending over a large flat roof and an abundance of noisy air conditioners both under and to the right of us. We also lost all water flow from any of the hot water taps one night from 10:30 to 3:00 AM. Hardly a deluxe experience!

"Beach visit was awesome!!"

We enjoyed an amazing beach trip, mainly because Kurt was such a fabulous host! Thank you for such a memorable stay!!! Fantastic! Fabulous! Fun!! Joe was also a great host. They are both so friendly!! Sincerely yours, Natalie

"Nice place, but overpriced"

Overall impressions: The resort is nice, but on the smaller side. The pictures make it look as if the building and grounds are huge and sprawling, but in reality it is quite compact. Two small pools next to each other with not a lot of space around them for pool chairs. Food is average but overly expensive. Resort fee of almost $30 per day (with taxes) is added for some reason. Not that it gets you anything. You still pay $40 per day for 2 beach chairs and 1 umbrella. The resort will tell you that it is run by a 3rd party, but it is really the part of the resort. Just jack up your room rate by $25 and stop fooling us. Plus they charge $10 per day for self parking. The staff is what makes a big difference though - very nice staff all around, always smiling. Reception: Smallish area near the entrance. Checkin was quick. No early check in provided. Checked in at 10:30, but got the room only at 3:30. Michael, the check-in host, didn't provide any help about what we could do for 5 hours while waiting for our room. Later we found out what he could have given us an access key to an area downstairs next to the gym where you can shower and change etc. We would have appreciated it greatly. No water offered either on a hot day in Florida. Learn from Caribbean resorts who always offer a punches or other cooling drinks. They are your competition. Room: We had the luxury room booked. Visa Signature offers free room upgrades, but we didn't get one because the hotel was at capacity. The room itself is quite small, two double beds taking the whole room. Beds were comfortable though short in length. So people who are 6 feet or more will have their legs sticking out. Pillow were too soft. Bathroom was small with a tight squeeze for a small toilet, almost kid sized. Small towels were provided, not big ones. Soaps were of a nice quality. Clothesline in tub was broken, but housekeeping should have had it fixed. Make it part of their checklist please. Furnishings etc were average, definitely not the "luxury" that the hotel's website makes it out to be. This is not your W or Marriott type, much lower. Room had a Keurig coffee machine which was great, but they only provide two small bottles of water for drinking and for coffee. They do sell $7 bottles of Fiji water though. Pools: Two small/medium sized pools next to each other in a very cramped space. Feels quite claustrophobic. You have to go down before 8am to reserve pool chairs from the staff. The pool side staff are extremely hard working and friendly, and diligent. They provide plenty of free towels. Iced water is readily available at the towel hut as well. There is a small area by the side for kids with two ping pong tables, 1 pool table and huge floor chess and checkers boards. Good to keep kids busy. There is a small game room with a couple of arcade style video games. The car racing game could benefit from an upgrade. The pool area was always overcrowded and extremely noisy. So if you are looking for a quiet place, look somewhere else, or pay $40- $150 per day for beachside chairs and tents. Food at the pool side was excellent though and attendants are responsive and friendly, especially Laura. Although the pools are supposed to be heated, the water temp was on the colder side. There is a small hot tub between the two pools. Beach: Beautiful, big, wide and miles long St Pete beach. Right in front of the pool area so you can go back and forth between the two all day. The sand in front of the hotel is the softest I've seen anywhere, very powdery, white and clean. The water is clear and calm even at high tide and very shallow quite a ways in. This is a top notch beach. Restaurants: The primary place for food is the Sea Porch restaurant. They have a $24 breakfast buffet. While the food is good, the buffet isn't a vast spread that you see at comparable resorts. The choices are very few. There is an a la carte menu but prices range around $15 plus $5 for coffee. Kids buffet is $13. You should make reservations or you might end up waiting a while. For lunch and dinner their menu is limited. Food is decent but definitely not exceptional. Shrimp and grits were great but the lamb chops were way overcooked. Snapper was great, but way too sweet. Sweet fish? The servers are very nice and hard working. The 3 hosts who take your reservations and seat you, need a lot more training as they are often confused and slow. Never saw any of them smile either. The wait staff make up for them.

"Good traditional hotel at great location"

We spent three nights at Don Cesar, just a few days after the management change. Believe almost all guests realized that. Unfortunately, that change had a negative impact on various procedures. However, I need to mention that all member of staff tried to find a way to solve the problems. The pros: Great location, beautiful sandy beach, nice (but crowded) pool, delicious food at the Sea Porch Café, helpful staff The cons: Definitely the small rooms that need a renovation.
