Over The Chalet Kilauea Hotel

Our favorite

My wide and I were in Hawaii and wanted to spend a night near the volcanos. We booked through Trip Advisor and were led to believe that we would be staying at Chalet Kilauea. However, when we arrived the front desk attendant told us that our room was at Volcano Hale - a house with ten or so bedroom and a shared kitchen/living room - similar to a hostel. When we told the gentleman that we were misled, he blamed Trip Advisor and said it was not his company's fault in any way. He was very rude and not interested in helping us. A total scam - beware!!

"Spacious room & lovely property"

Chalet Kilauea is a beautiful, five-room complex tucked into the rain forest just minutes away from Volcanoes National Park. We resided in room 103 for three consecutive nights. The view from the broad windows looked into the koi pond and verdant garden below. The space within the room was incredible compared to most hotels. We had a king size bed that was quite cozy. An excellent kitchenette in one corner was complete with a mini fridge, microwave, and a small assortment of cups, glasses, plates, bowls, napkins and silverware, even a wine cork remover. The bathroom was likewise spacious, with abundant counter room and two sinks. The shower was amazing--two shower heads mounted to the ceiling, each with independent controls. My six-foot-four husband immediately requested we get a shower like that at home, too. Our room had no other rooms below or above, which made it feel more like a townhouse than a standard hotel room. The chalet acts as the office for three local properties. (If you see other reviews complaining about shared bathroom facilities, that is NOT Chalet Kilauea, but the nearby Volcano Hale that they also manage.) The office personnel is only present during the day but emergency numbers are clearly posted. Housekeeping staff isn't there all day, either, but there is an accessible storage room in a hallway where guests can grab more toilet paper or towels if necessary. We found that quite handy. This place is a good bargain compared to the few other hotels near VNP, but there are two negatives I need to address. First of all, our room, with its prominent windows, featured sheer curtain panels spaced out across the room. This made me feel very uncomfortable about privacy, especially at night. The window privacy likely isn't such an issue with the other rooms on site. Parking is another major factor. There are only five available narrow spaces in the lot. People didn't know quite how to park, if they should attempt to follow the tightly-spaced lines or what. So, anarchy was the rule. We actually made an effort to return by nightfall most nights, just so we could be assured of a good parking spot. That said, I would still consider staying here again because of the beautiful property, amenities involved, and access to the park.

"Terrific tucked-away treehouse"

Stayed here for just one night while seeing Volcano National Park, which is well worth the visit. This mini-hotel sits just off Wright Road, about a mile from the park, perfectly situated. We had Room 3, quaint but spacious enough, with polished wood floors and a delightfully comfortable king. The bath has two bowls and a double sized shower with rain heads: fantastic. There is a wall-mounted electric fireplace that adds a good bit of ambience and romance; nicely done all in all. Absolutely recommended.

"Funky (in a good way) room in a Japanesque setting!"

We stayed in room 106, which I think is a honeymoon suite, because THE SHOWER WAS A CAVE!! It was so cool. Everything was thought of: little plates and cups and silver ware since they don't have a cafe... Fridge, microwave, and lots of little unusual details around the grounds that were super cool. There's a koi pond, red gates (reminded us of Japan) and water features outside, and lots of levels and coolness (like an elephant sculpture and a giant vase) inside near our room. The room has different floor levels (not conducive to someone who has trouble walking) and a dehumidifier, neat-o wall heater, and a nice big bed and fresh linens. We paid 130 plus tax, which was kind of the norm in the Volcano village, and after a day of hiking around the craters, this was a great place to relax and unwind in a little jungle of our own.

"Fantastic Accommodation"

Really loved this accommodation, I had no idea how super cool it was. Absolutely loved the cave decor, it was like living in a lava cave. Best, best comfy bed, super clean (loved the essential oil smell of the room).
