Over The Chalet Kilauea Hotel

Our favorite

"Incredible Hotel In the Middle of the Jungle"

A really incredible, small hotel just outside Volcano National Park. The rooms are stellar. Custom hardwood furniture everywhere. Spacious. Lovely bathroom and as quiet as can be. Had a lovely stay while we visited family and explored the park. Also not far from a few restaurants in town that are just down the street. If you're looking for a quiet, not very touristy place to relax and spend a few days, you really can't do much better than Chalet Kilauea.

"Charm goes on you"

This is a very quirky and rather basic guesthouse, but once you acclimatize and settle in you realize it is a charming place and has everything you need for a stay to tour Volcanoes NP. We stayed 2 nights and enjoyed it, but bear in mind weather is not the same as on the sunny coast. Reading full spread of recent reviews should give a clear and very good impression.

"Quirky but great"

We were in the area to tour the Volcano National Park and the Chalet Kilauea was a great base about 15 minutes from the park. The room are based in lush tropical forest with a koi pond in the middle. The rooms are really well thought out and presented to match the tropical surroundings. Our room had an entrance room/ tea bar area which was really useful for bags with coffee available! The room required a dehumidifier (because its a tropical environment!) which was quite loud, but it was effective. Its a family-run hotel so reception is not always manned but a contact number is available. You can forgive such minor points when the whole hotel makes you smile so much!

"Reasonable but little over priced"

Stayed in Hale Volcanoes. Homely accommodation - hostel like but with pleasantly furnished rooms. Our room was a bit small but perfectly adequate. Good kitchen facilities. Not really within walking distance of local facilties which all close very early before 9pm.

"What an Incredible Find!!"

My husband surprised me with a weekend getaway to the Big Island for my birthday. We stayed in the Chalet Kilauea’s Deluxe Bungalow for two nights. It was simply marvelous! The bungalow is private; yet right less than 3 miles from the entrance to the Kilauea Volcano Park. Besides it’s wonderful location, it is a beautiful bungalow. The bedroom a firm, but comfortable king-sized bed, built-in wooden shelves for your clothes, wall hooks with hangers, and a nice big screen TV. The volcano-themed bathroom had a jetted tub big enough for two, a corner sink with mirrors on both sidewalls, and a shelf above the toilet for your personal items. The shower had a rainfall showerhead with full-length glass windows looking out into the surrounding topical vegetation and trees. The hot water came from an on-demand water heater, but it generally only took 2 – 3 minutes to heat up. Make sure you bring all your own toiletries since the bathroom amenities only included tissues, 2 small bars of soap, and a trial sized shampoo. The living room had a pretty LED fire display, coach, chair, and coffee table. One corner of the room had shelves with a Phillips radio/alarm/IPOD dock with speakers, telephone, and decorative items. Off to the side of the living room was a small kitchen-like area with a sink, microwave, and traditional coffee pot. If there was one thing I would change about the bungalow, it would be to have a Kuerig instead of a traditional coffee pot. If you are an herbal tea drinker like me, you’d have to bring your own tea and microwave your water to get it hot (unless you didn’t mind a little coffee taste with your tea), not the most ideal set-up. The bungalow also had a lovely sitting area on the porch outside with a chiminea, a perfect place for relaxing after dinner with an evening drink by the fire. You should also be aware that the bungalow does not come with maid service, though we were supplied with enough towels and washcloths for the two nights we were there. I do not need my bed made and towels hung up by a maid every day. I would much rather have the privacy with no baby crying in the room next door and no elevator doors opening or guest doors shutting at all hours of the night. It was a peaceful and beautiful setting, yet close enough to all the activities you would want to do on the Hilo side of the island. My husband and I have been to the big island several times for weekend getaways since we live on Oahu. This is by far the best accommodations we’ve found for the money!! Book ahead!!
