Over The Chalet Kilauea Hotel

Our favorite

"Departure from the "Everyday" "

   20-01-2017
Husband and I stayed overnight while visiting the Hilo side of the island, and chose this location due to its reasonable pricing and unique, local feel. I think a big key to satisfaction here is your expectation level going in: we weren't expecting a lavish, luxurious stay and we were sure to select the type of room we wanted and the location carefully prior to booking. When we checked in we were a little apprehensive as the front office is dated and had a faint, musty smell (not great first impression) but fortunately that did not transfer to the room! The experience was fun and perfect for one evening - our room was huge with an awesome two-person shower, and the waking up to the sounds of the gurgling koi point and birds chirping in the lush foliage was wonderful. On flip side of the lovely sounds are the other background noises, although they aren't the hotel's fault: the guests staying in the room above us left at 3 in the morning, packing and dragging their suitcases down the stairs which woke us up. Another downside was the bed - nothing wrong with it per se, but it wasn't great for us sleepwise (others may love it). That all being said, for the size/uniqueness of the room and the experience, it was a memorable evening. We were happy we chose this rather than the far more expensive volcano lodge inside the park!

"very good accommoation for a night at Volcano Village($$)"

For $$ a night at Volcano Hale ,you will find a good room and very nice share bathrooms, lots of towels, soap and shampoos, microwave and fast free WiFi. The room is very clean and cozy. So you can save some money to spend at local restaurants and grocery stores.

"Rustic but liveable"

We chose to stay here when we couldn't get a room at the Volcano House. We arrived around 1:00 pm. A sign on the door said the office was closed and they would return at 1:30. The sign also said check-in wasn't until 4:00. We waited for the office to open, and explained our situation. We needed to drive to Kona for a nighttime snorkeling trip we had booked. We couldn't wait around until normal check-in time. Also, the rental car ended up being upgraded to a convertible Mustang. We had to put a suitcase in the backseat. We really didn't want luggage in the backseat during our drive. The girl working the desk couldn't have been any nicer. We had booked the private lodge, and it wasn't clean yet. The housekeeper met us at the lodge. We were allowed to place our bags on the covered porch while he cleaned, and he would place the bags inside when he was finished. He did as promised. It worked out great. We also wanted to see where our cabin was located during daylight because Volcano Village can be very dark at night and hard to find things. The cabin had a large, covered front porch. We had a love seat, faux fire place, tv, sink, microwave, and good size small refrigerator all located in the sitting area. The bedroom was decent sized, with minimal hangars to hang things on a wall rack. The bathroom was very unique. There was "lava" and "rocks" on one wall by a large Jacuzzi tub. The shower was actually external to the cabin. After stepping through a doorframe, the all glass shower has more rock on the floor and as a seat. The shower has decorative paintings on the glass to cover the lower body. There is a bamboo wall outside to provide privacy. Problems. The cabin was frequently cold. There is a small space heater in the bathroom and in the bedroom, with instructions on use and closing off doors to help heat the areas. However, the space heaters are made of plastic. We really didn't feel comfortable running them all night. We kept all the doors open and kept the wall heater in the tv room running. The first trip to the toilet in the morning was an eye opener for sure. Keeping in mind that this place is fairly rustic, it was adequate for our 4 night stay. Problem. The headboard of the bed and the t.v. components shelves in the tv room were very dusty, as in probably not dusted for at least 6 months. We had some issues with a couple of bugs. I understand it is a rainforest. One of the bugs looked like a roach. It was a small thing. Problem. The hot tub didn't work. We spent a full day hiking on the volcano and really wanted to sit in the hot tub. After a small glitch, we got the hot tub running. However, it never warmed up. The sign said it had to run for 15 minutes to transition from energy saver mode to hot water. We gave it 20 minutes, and there was no change in water temp. The hot tub was also dirty. The water had a yellowish color to it and smelled. There was also visible debris in the bottom and in one seat chair. We notified the front desk of it not working, and she said she would have their maintenance man look at it. We thought about trying it again a couple of days later, but I couldn't get past the dirty water. We passed. Overall, this is a nice place to stay. It is a rustic hotel in a rainforest. We had plenty of hot water, which was a big bonus. It was so convenient for hiking in the volcano park.

"very satisfying stay"

   18-12-2016
We stayed for 2 nights while exploring the National Park and surroundings. Our room was very spacious, offered everything you need during your stay, such as a very comfortable bed, a clean bathroom with a huge shower for 2 (even two rain-shower-heads with individual controls), a small kitchen area and a very effective heating system. The hotel grounds are very interesting, Japanese style with a small artificial lake. Everything was very well taken care off, spotless clean. The location of the hotel is superb, everything you need and want to visit quite near. So there's no problem to visit the National Park even in the night for a few minutes. Downsides? The lobby because there is basically none. Even the availability of any staff is very limited, because basically there is none. All in all: a fantastic place to explore the area.
