"Great hotel, very well located"
The Onyx is a very nice hotel, we love going there whenever we go to a Celtics game since it's very close from the TD Garden and from Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market, it's about 2 minutes away by foot from both, which is nice when you are coming back from a game. The rooms are very modern and clean. Also, the staff is really nice and they offer a good service. We once went on my mom's birthday and they gave us a bottle of champagne and two Fiji water bottles in our room for the occasion.
"Treated like family"
Great location! Walking distance to the Garden and the T...many pubs close by...the rooms are very clean and decorated nicely. Bed was super comfy and robes are provided. Complimentary happy hour in the lobby. I advise using their valet...way cheaper than trying to feed the meter every 3 hours!
"Last minute choice"
I was forced to spend the night in Boston because of weather related airport issues. Unfortunately hotel prices were double the usual rates because of a big event at the TD Garden stadium/venue. First the positives: I found the Onyx to be a relatively inexpensive choice for this unplanned overnight stay. The taxi ride from the airport was only 12 minutes both at night and in the morning. Although I didn't take advantage of it the location is walking distance to quite a few bars and restaurants The front desk was friendly and helpful as was my waiter in the lobby restaurant. Now the downside: The water pressure in the shower head is terrible. Not sure if this is a hotel-wide issue or if it is a problem only in a few rooms. If that bothers you, I would ask about this issue before you book an extended stay. Also the towels and bathrobes have seen better days, the bathrobe was scratchy enough that I didn't put it on. The rating is based on the fact that it was overall a pleasant overnight stay for a reasonable price.
"Good start to our trip"
My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights at the start of a train trip from Boston to Niagara Falls. We were greeted in a friendly manner when we arrived. Our room was on the 10th floor. It contained one of the most hideous pieces of furniture I had ever seen but it was clean and comfortable. The bathroom was very clean as well. A couple of minor gripes though. Firstly, the towels were too small for my liking. Most hotels I visit seem to provide a lot of towels but not big ones. Personally, I'd prefer fewer but bigger ones. The other thing was that the room contained a mini bar at the usual level of prices and some fairly pricey bottles of water but no means of making a coffee. We always like to have a coffee first thing and plan our day before heading for breakfast. There was a sign in the room which said a coffeemaker was one of many things they could provide if we had forgotten something but we didn't pursue that. Admittedly, there was free coffee available in the lobby from 6 am but neither of us could be bothered to make ourselves presentable to go down 10 floors to get any. The location was very convenient. It was a short walk to Haymarket for the subway and North Station for a day trip to Salem and then our journey on to Pittsfield. The freedom trail was also just a short walk away. The wine hour was a nice touch. Breakfast was also good. We had one dinner there as well. The veggie options were limited but we did get a reasonable meal. I had spring rolls to start with and the portion could easily have passed for a main course. I did not enjoy the stirfry quite so much although my husband enjoyed his. Our nephew joined us for dinner and enjoyed his meal. We found all the staff on reception to be helpful and friendly. If we return to Boston we shall certainly consider staying here again. The one thing I don't know about this stay is how much it cost. I had a specialist agency put the trip together based on a budget I gave them and the individual costs were not itemised on our itinerary. However, the overall trip was good value for money
"Not a winge but disaponted"
Having stayed in Kimpton hotels before, and having just stayed in The Ink in NYC we were really looking forward to staying at the Onyx in Boston. However on arrival we were put in a very small room by Kimpton standards on the 9th floor even though we had booked a deluxe king room - very disappointing. Having queried this with the front desk we were told that deluxe refers to the floor of the hotel rather than the room standard ..... Unfortunately the air conditioning in the room was extremely noisy during the night and so we had a limited amount of sleep and the room was too warm to switch it off! The front desk arranged for an engineer to look at the air conditioning the next day but this couldn't be fixed so we were moved to another room on the 6th floor. It was a bit of a hassle as we were only staying for two nights. Interestingly this was a far bigger and superior room with working AC which is what we had expected on our first night. Not sure why we weren't given this quality of "deluxe room" when we checked in! The staff were very friendly and extremely helpful but having stayed in other Kimpton properties we felt we were very unlucky with the room allocation. Not sure we would stay here again and may think twice before using Kimpton in the future - very disappointed! Previously stayed in the Palomar in Washington and The Ink in NYC which were fantastic. Also unable to add any points to our Karma card as we hadn't booked directly ....... unlike Hilton Hotels. The bonus for this hotel - the staff and the usual wine happy hour! But this does not make up for lack of quality of our initial experience. Kimpton is a name were you expect to receive the best!
