"Disappointing- Not a Typical Kimpton Property- Beware"
We have loved the Kimpton properties that we have stayed at in the past, that is why we chose this one. The Onyx was a big let down. We arrived to a packed lobby with a line to check in. While the staff was friendly, and handled it well, it was still a surprise to see people packed in there waiting with suitcases lined up. We arrived ready for a drink, and some relaxation yet the bar was closed. How can a hotel bar be closed, is that typical for a Sunday night in Boston? The room was positively tiny, no place to put more than one suitcase, I had to put mine by the door to the hallway on the floor. Not exactly luxury accommodations. Monday night we walked around, the Onyx is in a great location, and we headed back to grab a drink at 4 before our plans for the evening. The bartender tells us they don't open until 4. We tell them it is 4. Then they tell us they don't open until 5. OK. When we finally do make it to the restaurant/bar area it is so packed that there is no place to sit, so we never had the pleasure of trying anything. For over $1000 for a two night stay I wish we had done better research. It was my 50th birthday and we had traveled all the way from Florida for this stay, I only have myself to blame for not looking at trip advisor. I trusted the Kimpton name, and that was a mistake.
My wife and I stayed here in January with another couple for 4 days and 3 nights. I couldn’t say enough about the staff and all the employee who were Always friendly and helpful. Checking in was a breeze. The Hotel it sled is in a more quiet party of Boston but is around the corner from two sports bars, a cafe and a 7-11. The hotel was recommended to me by my buddy Ken who was traveling with us. He travels frequently for business and is part of their top tier rewards membership. They provide fruit water and newspapers in the lobbies, coffee and tea in the morning. The restaurant and bar are only open during certain times such as weekends. The offer a complimentary happy hour at 5 with light snacks and are let friendly. If you forget any toiletries they do have a supply. Upon arriving at our room we were met with a welcome gift of sparkling water, a bottle of wine and chocolate covered strawberries. Delicious!!! The inroom mini bar does allow 1 $10.00 dollar freebie as long as your a registered rewards member. The room was very clean and spacious near the elevator. The hotel wa quite and well kept. Room service was average and fairly quick. This hotel is more of a relaxed and quit pace to unwind but will worth your tim and money. I would like to shout out to the bellboy/ vallet gentleman who during our checkout noticed our Buddies vehicle had a Dead battery. He went out of his way to use a jumper pack and his own vehicle to finally get is going in 20 degree weather while it was snowing. Excellent customer service!! If you’re looking for a place to stay with excellent customer service, unique freebies and a relaxed yet hip atmosphere, definitely try this place. Make sure you sign up for the rewards program!
"Pot Heads in the Hallway"
On Saturday, 04/07/2018 my wife and I arrived in Boston for an overnight trip. We picked this hotel due to its proximity to the TD Garden. Prior to our arrival, we called the hotel while about 30 minutes out, to learn what our parking options were. The phone rang and rang without a response. My wife was eventually able to reach someone once we were patched through via the main line for Kimpton hotels. Upon arrival, the front desk clerk was very nice and allowed us to not only place our luggage in our room before our check in time, but also allowed us to check in hours before our scheduled check-in time (3PM). The room itself was on the penthouse level. This was a "premiere room" that is offered but he hotel. Breakfast is included when you choose this option. For the price of the room, I would say it was average, compared to other hotels we had stayed out. I did notice that the lampshade on the side of the bed closest to the wall had spatter marks on it. There was also a long hair in the bathtub and some unknown dry caked on substance on one of the pillows. Not the pillow case, but the pillow itself. We didn't complain about these issues due to the early check-in. Upon returning to the hotel later that night, around 11pm, we were met at the door to the "penthouse wing" by a younger male who let us in. This male said that he was waiting for a friend. About a half hour later, a strong odor of marijuana began to seep into our room from the hallway area. This was then accompanied by loud yelling, laughing, etc. It sounded like a party was happening in one of the adjoining rooms and it was flooding out into the hallway. After a period of time, we called the front desk to ask if there were "quiet hours." We were told that there were not. We told the front desk about what was happening and were informed that the guests would be asked to quiet down. If this was actually done or not, I don't know. We were again woken-up at about 3am with more yelling, laughing, etc. Based upon the price of the room, I thought the hotel would attract mature adults. Based upon what happened in the hallway, I can definitively say this isn't true. The next morning we had breakfast at the restaurant within the hotel. If you pre-pay for breakfast, you get the "American Breakfast." The food was good and the server was friendly. I wouldn't suggest this restaurant if you don't like the occasional cold air coming in though. The main entrance to the hotel is pretty much at the restaurant. So overtime someone enters, so does a quick burst of cold air. Upon check out, we notified the front desk of the issue we had last night. We were told that someone should have come upstairs to address the issue. There are no notes taken, so we have no idea if anyone actually did. We were provided with a business card to the hotel and told to call in the future and "maybe they could do something for us." In the end, we walked away with a large bill and some exhaustion. If the pot party didn't happen, I would rate this hotel stay as average-good. Since we missed out on much needed sleep, I went with the poor category.
We chose this location mainly because of it's location to the Gardens as we were going there for a concert. Worked out great as it was less than a block away. Very nice staff and overall nice location
"Not worth the money"
Nice place to stay ...very close to TD Garden BUT the cost is high and you really dont get anything for it. Dry nar was not checked before we checked in and a bottle of wine was empty. Staff at the front desk was very pleasant but wait staff seemed to just wanted is to leave.
