"Decent hotel with great location to explore The Cape"
We stayed here for 5 nights using the hotel as a base for our first ever trip to the truly excellent Cape Cod. There are lots of pluses for Chatham Wayside. The hotel itself is very well situated in the heart of Chatham. All shops/restaurants and so on are on the doorstep. Everything is walking distance with the Lighthouse/nearest beaches approx 10-15 mins walk or a few mins drive. The guest parking facilities are really a bonus in the middle of town when its very crowded outside. The rooms we had were very spacious and thoroughly cleaned every day. The in-house bar (The Goose) is friendly and well stocked. Yet I think there are 3 areas where the hotel could up its game. Firstly, the breakfast really is very underwhelming, unless you're a hamster or something..Secondly, the pool area is very bland and functional. (If I was in charge I'd dig out the sloped strip of land to the left & spend a bit on a recreational pool/bar/relaxation area). Thirdly/finally - a bit more flexibility wouldn't come a miss. Having been on a day's fishing trip I was told that there was no way we could use/rent/borrow a bbq to grill our day's catch in our little ground garden outside and we should just make our way to the local restaurants instead. Whilst ultimately I accept the decision, I did not appreciate the delivery. But overall, we like it a lot and would stay again. A short stroll down the road for afternoon drinks at the Grand Hotel on the beach almost required a mortgage and was enough to convince me that in this part of the world, Chatham Wayside is the better allround option.
"Beautiful Inn in the Center of Chatham"
The historic Wayside Inn is located on Main Street in the heart of the charming village of Chatham. This year-round property offers 56 rooms and 3 rental properties. The rooms vary in size and some have porches or patios with views of Kate Gould Park or the Chatham Golf Course. All of the staff from the front desk to the bar were very helpful and friendly. Our room was of adequate size, very clean and nicely appointed. The pool was nicely maintained and offered plenty of towels. Be aware that the “free†Wifi, parking, pool and continental breakfast was assessed with an $18 per night “resort fee.†The Wild Goose Tavern is on-site and a convenient location for lunch and dinner with outdoor patio dining. The “Goose†has a large bar that is always busy and a great place to join friends and family. The location in the center of Chatham was perfect for walking to Lighthouse Beach, the Chatham Lighthouse, Kate Gould Park, The Squire, shopping and all downtown restaurants.
"Not welcoming of families with small children"
Nice accommodations -- room was large and well-appointed. Housekeeping very thorough. Pool was maintained and enough towels provided. Quick negatives -- breakfast starts at 8am, which is late, especially for families with young children. The fitness center's hours are quite limited (8am - 8pm), but since it's key-controlled, it should be open 24/7 -- especially if you're going to charge a separate "facility fee" per night of $18. Pro tip to innkeeper -- just roll the facility fee into the room charge, otherwise it seems like nickel-and-diming guests. We had an incident in the restaurant which management failed to respond to appropriately. First off, despite there being no signs, no strollers are allowed in the restaurant. The hostess has the unenviable job of notifying patrons of this asinine rule. Wheelchairs I've been assured, are OK, but they would also block egress in case of a fire, so...STRIKE ONE! In any case, we went back to our room, switched the stroller for a car seat for our 8 month old, and went for round two. The hostess asked if we wanted a high chair, and we politely said no (our son would wiggle out!). As we were getting comfortable at our table, a waitress felt the need to tell us the car seat could not be placed on the floor as servers might need to squeeze between tables -- we were seated along the perimeter of the restaurant, and there were maybe 10% of tables occupied at the time. STRIKE TWO! Our waiter Juan Carlos was a total sweetheart and loved to interact with our baby. At the end of our meal (food was just average), the manager Linda stopped by to ring up the check and asked how everything was. My husband patiently explained how we felt less-than-welcome and were taken aback by the stroller rule and the waitresses' reprimand. She was quick to apologize, but then felt the need to dismiss what my husband had just said and reprimand us on placing the car seat on a chair. STRIKE THREE! THREE STRIKES AND YOU'RE OUT! My husband called the front desk after we returned home and spoke to Mark. He was apologetic and said he'd pass on to management. I then followed up with the innkeeper Jennifer who said she would consult with Linda at the restaurant and be back. She called back and said she spoke to her manager, Ryan, and said there was nothing they could do to make this right. I'm sure Linda told them some fabricated story about how we were the worst patrons in the history of the Wild Goose Tavern. They had a chance to make things right -- at the very least, comp the damn check -- but they failed. Not very hospitable for folks working in the hospitality industry. I've told friends and family with children to avoid, and will continue to let folks know that there are more welcoming options in Chatham.
"Beautiful room and comfortable bed."
My wife loved the room. It would be nice to have a chair in the room. But there are a lot of chairs to sit and read throughout the inn. Very nice breakfast and tasty coffee. Lots of drawer space if you like to put your clothes away or hang them up.
"Beware of $18/Day "Resort Fees""
Overall, the Wayside Inn is a decent place to stay in Chatham. We were seriously disappointed on check out that they assess an $18/night “Resort Feeâ€. I was told it was for things like “Wifi, parking, pool, and breakfastâ€. SERIOUSLY? Wifi, parking, and breakfast are included in most entry level motels… and the POOL was CLOSED!. This is not a resort…it is a hotel/motel. Since it is not possible to stay here without paying the fee, it should be included in the room charge. When I checked the website after getting home, the site clearly shows “Room $220 + $39.34 in Taxes†In fact, taxes are only $21.34….the rest is “Resort Feesâ€. I am fairly sure it is not legal to cover up fees as taxes. This is clearly designed to deceive the customer as to the true cost of the room. I say “Just say NOâ€. There are plenty of nice places in Chatham that actually appreciate your business.
