• Downtown shuttleservice
"Has really gone down hill"
Horrible! We have stayed at the Essex once or twice a year for many, many years and always had a wonderful experience. However, they used to have a shuttle that went to the museum campus and downtown, a pool, and a restaurant. All three are gone. Without out those the price tag isn't worth it, you can stay at a MUCH nicer place for just a little bit more and have the perks. Also, they have done nothing to update rooms in a long time- becoming run down. Heat doesn't work correctly, you aren't able to adjust it, bath tubs are nasty. And instead of a business center they have two computers in the lobby- no privacy and cost a fortune to use the internet and print something. I will have to find a new regular Chicago hotel.
"Valet saved the day"
We were checking out of the hotel on a day that was Arctic cold. We were parked in a garage next to the valet parking and discovered that our car battery was dead. After waiting an hour for AAA to come, we found out it would take 2-1/2 more hours for them to arrive. We asked the valet if there was someone that could help us. Sami Abraham was one of the valets on duty who overheard, and not only did he use his own car to jump our battery, he actually pushed our car out of the parking spot, uphill(!), because the cables were too short! It was amazing and very kind of him, above and beyond the call of duty. His kindness is very much appreciated
"Great value in downtown Chicago"
We had a corporate event at the Field Museum over the weekend and decided to look on a whim to see if we could find a decently priced room downtown last minute so that we wouldn't have to get up as early in the morning to get there. To our shock and amazement, we actually did. We ended up choosing the Essex Inn mainly because it offered a two room suite with an actual separate bedroom. This is important to us because we have a three year old who needs more sleep than we do and it's nice that we're able to stay up and enjoy ourselves in our room after she has gone to bed. I would definitely recommend springing for this...we paid $130 after taxes and had plenty of space and our bathroom seemed to be much larger than what some of the other reviews are describing. We had a large closet, two dressers, a mini fridge and coffee maker. There were two televisions, a couch, coffee tables and a desk with chair. It was way more space than I was expecting. We had a nice view of the park and Michigan Ave. My only real complaint was the noise at night. The walls are pretty thin. I don't mind general noise, but we had a white noise machine going and could still hear some loud partiers and a couple, ahem, enjoying each other until nearly 3AM. I would have called the front desk about the party had I even been able to tell where it was coming from...we honestly couldn't tell if it was the room below, above or next to us. I think the odd heating system (which we did not have a problem with) might be a part of that? Also, it didn't wake up our daughter at all, so we just tried to ignore it the best we could. Next time I will definitely bring some ear plugs, though. Outside of the room, the pool looked great but it was 5 degrees outside so we didn't even want to attempt to use it. Even though the restaurant is currently closed for renovation, there are still plenty of good dining options in walking distance. Valet parking is $60, so we chose to use the SpotHero app and parked about a block away for $11 a day. (I also believe we would have had in-and-out privileges in this lot but we just walked everywhere once we arrived.) The staff here is also amazing. Just very kind, helpful and always wanting to make sure you are enjoying yourself. I think the man working at the desk when we left was named George and he was super friendly. He made sure we enjoyed our room and asked what we'd been enjoying in Chicago and made some recommendations. Overall, it was definitely worth our money and we'll be back if we stay downtown again anytime soon.
"Very helpful staff"
We flew from England our cases got left behind in Amsterdam for 2days it was very cold and inches deep with snow two weeks before Xmas the staff on the front desk were really helpful and very friendly they said they would look out for our cases coming. The doorman got us toothbrushes and toothpaste a comb and other toiletries all complimentary until we got sorted out in our room. He told us about a good place to eat that was nearby nothing was a problem the room was lovely and warm with a good view from two sides we looked onto a college the Xmas party was going on there mmmm .. Nice comfy bed and towels our cases turned up when we were out and they were put into our room for us happy days as we were moving on extra nice staff and a great place to stay just a short walk to the shops be aware there is plenty of beggars on the streets. Would definitely go and stay there again
I stayed here for 2 different nights to be able to get to the museums early. The location is great if you don't mind a bit of a walk or taxis are readily available. Our first stay, we were upgraded to a 2-room suite. It was great! We were in the front on the 8th floor with a great view. We decided to try the pool. It is huge as well as the general pool area. The water was freezing!! I could only handle about 5 minutes and had to get out. Oh well, this was the night the Cubbies won so we were ready to go watch them play. Our second stay we had a normal room, but were still in the front with a great view on the 9th floor. We decided to check out the pool again and it was warmer, not warm, but I could handle it. There are plenty of chairs, tables, and towels at the pool. We had great experience both times with the staff and the hotel is very clean. The beds were comfy and we were never bothered by noise even though we were pretty close to the elevator both times. There is no on-site restaurant, but this is Chicago so there is plenty of choices nearby. We will definitely be coming back on our next visit!
