"Noise. Tub that won't drain. No water pressure. Convenient location."
Stayed 4 nights this week. Convenient location. Fitness room is brand new and nice. Front desk staff and bellman very friendly. The view from my room was lovely. .That is all that is nice to speak of. The constant noise, construction and otherwise, is terrible. Impossible to sleep, even with a noise canceling app on a cell phone. No power plugs by the bed to plug laptops or phones up. There was mold on the ceiling by the windows, most likely due to the amount of moisture on the window from the difference in temps from inside to outside. The shower pull was broken so it could only be pulled half-way up. This meant poor water flow for a shower. Plus the tub didn't drain.
"Under Construction "
We stayed at the Essex 2 years ago over spring break and LOVED it. Great view, great pool and sun deck. Amazing breakfast in attached restaurant. Also enjoyed parking on site. HOWEVER- we were NOT warned that the annex you see in the picture has been torn down! NO pool, NO parking and NO restaurant! As if that wasn't bad enough, the construction crew started at 7 am, waking all 4 of us! We should have been informed of the changes. The room was nice, the staff was pleasant, so perhaps when the construction is finished we will try The Essex Inn again...
"Just Plain Bad"
I stayed at the Essex Inn the weekend of March 11 with my brother and his family for a quick getaway weekend. My sister-in-law had been recommended this hotel a couple of years ago and booked the room without reading any of the reviews. I had previously checked TripAdvisor and knew we were not going to have a good room. However, she was unable to get a refund unless she cancelled 72 hours prior and it was beyond this timeframe for her to cancel. If you look on the Essex website, they do not mention they are under construction; nor was my sister-in-law told they were under construction when she booked the "family suite". This is listed as "spacious" on the Essex website. I'm not quite sure what the Essex's definition of "spacious" is, but it is not spacious by any means. The sitting room had a small desk, TV with fridge and safe, and a couch which pulled out into a bed. There is not nearly enough room for a family to sit without someone sitting on the nasty, dirty carpeting. The bedroom had 2 queen sized beds. Both rooms had floor to ceiling windows and this is okay, but the lower half of the windows actually opened and with being on the 14th floor, it's a straight drop down to the empty lot next door. My 4 year old and 7 year old nephews easily could have went out these windows. Needless to say, we ended up pushing the coffee table in front of the windows in the sitting and placed luggage in front of the windows in the bedroom. How is this legally safe? The bathroom is so small there is barely room to turn around. Being on the 14th floor I didn't expect to hear much traffic, but it was very noisy and it sounded like the walls are made of paper. Because the St Patrick's festivities had started that weekend you could hear people partying in their rooms and what sounded like beer bottles being thrown out the windows and smashing in the lot below. Also, being it was March the heat is on and there is no way to control it. We spent the morning at the Shedd and when we got back in the afternoon it had to be 85 degrees in our room (and that was with the drapes closed). I tried to get the fan to turn on just to circulate some air, but it didn't work. I do want to acknowledge the staff. They were all very friendly and when my niece and brother both ended up with the stomach flu, they graciously only charged us a $50 late check out fee instead of a full day when we had to check out 1 day early. Overall, I hope once the construction is done, that this hotel will be up to par with the other hotels on Michigan Ave. In the meantime, do yourself a favor and book a room at the Hilton next door. You'll be happier in the long run!
"TEAR THE WHOLE PLACE DOWN"
My family and I have stayed at the Essex a half dozen or so times in the past and never had any issues. We loved the pool, the deck overlooking Michigan Avenue and its proximity to the great restaurants and clubs on Wabash. However...our most recent visit this last weekend SUCKED. When making the reservation we were not told that the pool, restaurant and parking garage were all gone. Their website made no mention of it either. The rooms and hallways were dirty, old and worn down. The heat/air was a joke. No matter what the temperature is outside, the heat/air is a dedicated system that stays on seasonally. It was relatively warm the day we arrived, yet the heat was blasting out. Now that the pool, restaurant and parking garage have been torn down, the hotel itself should follow suite. Do not waste your hard earned dollars at The Essex. JT Cleveland
Hotel was under construction, but staff were friendly and accommodating! We were able to walk to our venues during this portion of out trip! Love CHICAGO!!! The hotel was clean and had comfortable rooms.
