"Good value, great staff, nice accomodations"
We spent three nights at the Essex Inn in early November (11/9-11/11/16). We were pleased in all respects with our experience at this hotel, starting with our check-in and everything that followed. First, a little background. We are budget-minded travelers. We also enjoy staying in small to mid-size non-chain hotels. We don't need a lot of amenities (room service, spa, etc.). Basically, we try to stay at hotels that are near public transportation and attractions that interest us, are in safe locations, and have received generally good reviews for cleanliness and comfort. We arrived at the Essex at approximately 7AM after a red-eye flight from Los Angeles. We were allowed to check-in early ($25 fee, which we gladly paid so that we could crash for a couple of hours) and were pleased to learn that our room was upgraded to a suite overlooking Michigan Avenue and Millennium Park. The room was very clean and well maintained. The furnishings and carpet are a little dated, but in good condition. The bed was comfortable (I am a very light sleeper but I had no problem sleeping while there). The bathroom was very small but clean and functional. The water pressure in the sink and shower was more than adequate. There is a small refrigerator and a coffee maker in the room. The staff was very pleasant and helpful, starting with the night manager who checked us in, the front desk and bell staffs who answered any questions we had and gave us good suggestions for local restaurants (we like to "eat like locals" whenever we travel), and the housekeepers, who kept our room clean and well-stocked with towels, etc., during our stay. We had a good experience at the Essex Inn, will definitely stay there again when we next visit Chicago and would recommend it without reservation to our friends or family.
We stayed here after a Bears game at Soldier Field. It is only half a mile away. We had a great view of Grant Park from our hotel room. They have a lot of amenities including a fitness center and pool. It is slightly outdated but still very comfortable. Front desk was extremely nice. A downfall is that parking is $65/night.
"Needs major update."
This hotel is in a great location right across the Hilton and across Grant Park. But it desperately needs updates. The carpeting and walls have seen better days. I also tried to plug in my phone to the alarm/MP3 clock to find out that the adapter end is gone. The housekeeping service was spotty. On our second night, coming back from a long day at a conference, we found out that they took all our towels and didn't replace them. We never had a towel for the bathroom floor so we figured they don't have them, but on the 3rd night, there was one! You basically get what you pay for, but even then, you can do better for the same price.
My room was very clean,Very spacious and had a huge floor to ceiling window which looked out across Grant/Milenium Park. I had a huge flat screen tv with too many cable tv channels to count which was great and a bed that could probably have fit 4,as well as a large bathroom with the bath/shower combination, nice handbasin area and all of the usual hotel amenties hairdryer,iron,shampoo,conditioner,tea/coffee facilities etc. Lastly i have to mention the food tour offered by food planet ( i think ) it was supherb and took us to areas we would never have gone to, well worth it.
"Dated, Smelly and overpriced"
There are a bunch of things that the hotel needs to change if not a complete remodel. The carpet, curtains and mattress are all very dated and you can totally see the signs of wear. The carpet especially in my room was very dated and somewhat smelly which made the entire experience very off-putting. There was no fridge in my room, the shower faucet was leaking and the drain was clogged. Upon request, an engineer was sent after 24 hours to fix these issues. However, even after what they called "fixing", the fridge never worked and the faucet leaked all the time. Also, there was no microwave oven in the room. The Wifi was awfully sketchy and at best, super slow. I couldn't wait for my stay to be over. For the price that I paid (224/night), I am extremely disappointed with the overall experience and especially the condition of the hotel. I would never stay here again and would not recommend it to anyone else.
