"Would not recommend"
Our overnight stay at the Maswik Lodge left a lot to be desired. When we arrived we found the staff to be competent but not very friendly. When we got to our room it was only 59 degrees F. Very cold for a hotel room. After about an hour it finally warmed up but we found that the heating system was very strange. The heat would go on to bring the room to the correct temperature and once it got to the correct temperature and then went over by a degree the air conditioning would go on to bring the temperature down. This went on all night with us alternately being cold and hot. We had a very difficult sleep. That night we also went to the pizza parlor and were disappointed. We ordered three pizzas and I had to send mine back. Only about half of my pizza had sauce and cheese plus the sauce was unpleasant. It was as though pizza sauce had simply been turned out of a can and put on the pizza. The next morning we went for breakfast and again had some difficulties. My pancakes were burned and cold. I took them back and one of the staff members found some pancakes that were not burned and put them in the microwave for me.
"Convenient, cozy, relaxing, enjoyable stay"
The place is definitely a good choice when you are inside the park. There were some constructions going on around the area and so GPS didn't work but after a few tries it was pretty manageable. One thing that I wasn't very pleased with was the food that was being served at the Lodge for breakfast. The employees weren't that happy to serve as well. However, dinner was pretty good. Their wings are awesome! Another issue for me was the internet. There was only internet available at the lobby and not in the rooms and only 1 device at a time. It could also be a temporary thing as they are getting their connectivities adjusted. Otherwise, this place is quite nice, walkable distance to some of the viewing points and there's the convenience as it is one of the pick up and drop off points of some tours.
"Proximity and convenience!"
I gave it five stars because you are literally right in the middle of the action, yet the rooms are spacious, clean, well appointed, and in our case, on sale! The 22 degree temps, sleet covered ground, and the fresh three inches of snow may have caused that, however. The lodge is a two story, with many adjoining paired rooms. Very convenient for families. The parking lot is large, and well lit. The animals walk all around the area oblivious to the tourists. It is their home. Short walk to the restaurant, lodge, store, train station, and bus drop off.
"Excellent Deal for A National Park"
Spur of the moment we decided to go on a road trip to see the Grand Canyon. My wife booked the room at a low season discounted rate of about $90. Compared with what we've paid in the past for rooms in a national park, this was an excellent deal. The room size was comfortable for the two of us. Beds and linens allowed for good sleep. There was a fridge but no microwave. There is a large shelf area above the hangar bar, so we had a handy place to store breakfast and lunch fixings we'd brought along. WiFi speed was variable and only one device at a time can be logged in for each room. No issues with temperature in the room and plenty of hot water for the shower. The room was spotless. Our building was a short walk to the south rim and the Bright Angel trailhead. Stops for the Blue loop bus were also a short walk away. I would not hesitate to stay here again.
"Close to Everything"
We choose this hotel because it was within a bus ride to the South Rim. After a very late check-in (about 11pm) we were able to get settled after a 5 hour drive. The room was small but clean. Wi-fi didn't exist but the cell signal was excellent so we could access the internet on our phones. The tv was an old box model that only had standard definition and limited channels. Since we were mainly just here to sleep none of these things were deal breakers. The breakfast was excellent. I had the chicken-fried steak egg and cheese sandwich on toasted sour dough. I was expecting ok, it was one of the most unexpectedly great breakfast sandwiches that I have ever had. It was easy to get to do South Rim via bus and it was easy to get back to the lodge via the same bus route. If you don't plan on staying in your room much then stay here, if you are looking for something luxurious then stay somewhere else.
