"Perfect for what we needed"

My daughter and I flew in late to stay one night before heading to Indio the next day. This hotel was perfect for us. Only a short walk to the pier and convenient to a number of restaurants. The staff was very friendly and the room was clean. The hotel is older but that is part of its charm. The only downfall for us was not a lot of electrical outlets. Only one lamp in the room could be plugged in so there wasn't a lot of light and we also had several cellphones and accessories that we had to take turns charging. I know that is because of the age of the building and it was just a small inconvenience. Overall, it was a very nice experience and we would stay there again.

"Unpleasantly surprised"

Was expecting something decent but did not receive it. Old decor and very old carpeting made me cringe. Odor permeates from the carpet to your clothes. Seriously need to remove carpets for hygiene issues. Imagine how many bare feet have been on these carpets, they look extremely old, like 1970s old. There was popcorn ceilings and creaky bed. No excuse for water stains. String pull closet light reminds me of my college days. If you are fine with this then enjoy. If not, stay away from beach because this plays is as cheap as there is near the pier $200/ night. Location is fantastic no doubt, but why should I have to choose between location and hygiene? Urge the owners to refurbish. Could be the prime hotel in Santa Monica if someone put some work into the property.

"A well positioned hotel with excellent valet parking...but so in need of a refurb and updating"

There is no doubt as to the location...one block from Santa Monica beach and with the best valet parking but the hotel itself is dated and in serious need of a refurb. I respect that it has been family run since the 1940s howver to justify the same price status as other far superior hotels it really must have a makeover. The rooms are dowdy and oppressive albeit the shower was powerful. Just my view but there are better same price options....

"Very pleased with our stay."

Location brilliant (one block away from anything and everything) and the staff fantastic. Everything was very clean, which to me is really important. The bed was comfortable and the linen of good condition. We had a street-facing room initially but due to steel plates covering some roadworks holes in the road the first night's racket was not conducive to sleep and we asked to be moved, which they were most accommodating about. We were shifted into a larger room facing the central (air con unit) courtyard and the hum was more like white noise so didn't keep us awake. The hotel is an older property but the paint was fresh. The furniture, which is solid wood, is not contemporary but it all matches and is in good condition. We thought the breakfast set up was adequate - there are great breakfast cafes on either side of the hotel if you want the full deal: this is more a pit-stop before the day's adventures. The internet connection was weird but we had alternative means. We stayed for four nights: we didn't want to spend the money on a more expensive hotel and we were very pleased with what we got.

"You get what you pay for"

Besides being in a great location & having friendly staff there really wasnt anything good about the joint. The rooms were very old and we had to pay for a small fridge to be added to our room. The view out our window was crap and unfortunately its not a place i would recommend. I understand that its on the cheaper side and thats why we picked it( as we had just paid for 5 nights at the Disneyland Resort and that was very costly, but worth every cent). We learnt our lesson and would prefer to pay more for a nicer room next time. Its desperately in need of a reno but its location was fantastic.
