"Less than optimal "
I was coming to Monterey, CA with my dogs to attend a dog show. This hotel had been on the short list for hosting the National Specialty for my breed and had been thoroughly checked out by other dog owners. I've had some not so great experiences booking online lately from various sites, so I logged on the hotel website and then called to reserve. I noticed as I was calling, that there was a substantial discrepancy between the "internet special" and calling in person. Like $60.00. I inquired politely about this to the agent I was speaking to, to which I was promptly redirected to "Customer Service." When I questioned the large difference in price, the gal told me she couldn't find it! I told her, I'm on YOUR website looking at it right now! Nope, she wouldn't budge. Now I know, I should have just hung up and booked online, but to be blatantly fibbed to is a bit much. Also, I wanted to make sure I got a "pet friendly" room. Arrived, checked in and proceeded to follow the curving drive around the hotel. Be warned, if you drive a truck or large SUV, it will be challenging. The parking area is very narrow. I drive an Explorer and it was tricky. The room was very small with almost no space to get around the bed, let alone my gear. For this I paid $200 and $50 for my clean, well behaved dogs. It was comfortable enough and the grounds do have a very nice pet area. On my second night, I was awakened by a screaming brawl in the room directly above mine. I know this is not the hotels fault, but it was terrifying none the less. I checked out as early as possible the next morning. The front desk clerk was bordering on surly and I can only imagine the flak he had received from other guests that morning. I don't plan on staying here again.
"Good just as a stopover"
We stayed a couple of nights on our way back to San Francisco. Nice old style room, small swimming pool accessible mainly for rooms close by. A SPA is also available. Very limited parking area. The town of Monterey is nice but don't expect to have a very active nightlife. Even to have a late dinner could be problematic! Whale watching is a cool experience, better during sunny day.
The room we stayed in was very large and nicely decorated with fine furniture. The bathroom was spacious and had lots of extras to make our stay here very comfortable. We really enjoyed our stay here. It was a very long walk for a handicapped person to get to the restaurant as our room was at the opposite end of the expansive property. There was no way to drive there and find a parking spot. I would have asked for a different room if we had known in advance. The only bad thing to report was that there was someone above us with kids running back and forth even at 10 PM. I had to call several times to get the staff to make them be quiet.
Well, I went with my wife to have a few drinks and some spanish tapas. Food wasn't bad but any similarity to tapas it's a coincidence. Sangria was terrible (I had to add sugar from the coffeemaker) and if a Spaniard sees the so called "Patatas Bravas" will cry. There isn't any similarity. Just French fries with some kind of alioli. The local was nice and the service prompt and polite.
Good parking, lovely rooms, a pool and only five minutes walk to Monterey Main Street down to Fishermans Wharf. A definite good class inn for the area. A nice bar with outside seating shame it closes at 10 but think you can buy drinks and sit outside to finish them.
