"Not a 4 star hotel by any means"
We booked through a third party website and received this hotel. Their website says it is 4 star but our experience was anything but. Upon check-in, we were informed about some work being done to the hotel. We got up to our room and it was so loud we couldn't have a conversation. I immediately called the front desk and he told me some bs about how it's through the pipes and travels and isn't actually right above us even though it sounds like it is. He refused to give us any other room, despite it looking like the hotel was empty and we didn't see another human being on our whole floor. So we had to endure extremely loud tapping/banging noises above us. And the room was not updated like in the pictures on the website. It was extremely old furnishing and an odd setup. And despite paying through another website, it's not like this hotel was cheap. The bathroom door didn't even close properly nor did it have a lock. Not exactly comfortable. We tried going to the pool and the hot tub was filled with children who wouldn't leave after 30 minutes, but simply just re-turned the dial. We waited in our robes on the side and then just decided to leave. I know hotel staff have no say over this, but the hot tub was also very tiny. And just asking for a robe, the FDA said he would "see if they could find one". And then the maintenance guy came and delivered one and I asked if they had another and he said he didn't think so but that he would check. What kind of 4-star hotel doesn't have robes? Upon check-out they didn't even ask us how our stay was. I guess they simply don't care. The location was the only good thing. Not even a good value for the price we paid (not significantly less than the advertised price), I would hate for anyone to pay full price for this kind of poor experience. Very disappointed.
"Met My Needs"
I came to Ottawa for a 2-night stay to attend an AGM. As a disclaimer, my hotel breakfast was complimentary through the organization (not the hotel), however, breakfast items were no different than what is offered to regular hotel guests to my knowledge. My check-in process was very smooth and the Front Desk Agent ("FDA") was very informative. When I booked my room through the organization of the AGM, I was under the impression that the rate was room only, with no breakfast included. The FDA ran through details of my reservation such as dates of stay, room type, etc. I arrived to my room 740 which was right near the elevators. It was convenient but I was a bit weary as I wasn't sure how soundproof the room was, but this is put to the test later in the night. I entered the room to see it equipped with tea & coffee station, mini fridge, King bed, sofa, a desk directly under a wall-mounted TV, and a closet with an ironing board. The washroom hosted a stand up shower, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, soap bar, shower cap, facial tissue, plastic cups, and the toilet. All your basic necessities. The bed was very comfortable and very large, being a King sized bed. I did find there was tons of static in the room, like if I were to walk around on the carpet then touch my MacBook, I'd feel an electric shock. I also think I was staying in one of the non-renovated rooms (correct me if I'm wrong), and so the carpets felt like there was dust building up. I also saw strings of dust hanging from the ceiling. Unpleasant, but manageable for a 2-night stay. On my 2nd morning, Apr 10, there was some confusion with my breakfast, because the hostess thought we were part of a tour group and then thought my breakfast was not included since we were not part of said tour group. Our host from the organization had to reiterate the situation about breakfast to the front desk again so there was the hassle of as this should have been properly relayed at the time of booking. But I won't comment much further as I did not have a part in the negotiation of these rooms. My check-out process was a bit silly because normally check-out is at 10am. I was busy at the AGM so I did not check out in time. I got there after lunch at 1pm and I said honestly to the FDA that I genuinely forgot to check out on time, apologizing and also advising that if there was a late check-out fee to just let me know if I need to compensate. They were graciously nice enough to waive the fee and just let me check out with no further issues Novotel Ottawa met my needs, and props to the FDA's for being so pleasant. THe breakfast staff, however, need some work.
"Great inner city hotel"
My sister and I like to stay here! The best thing about it is the location! It is right beside Rideau Centre which has had a facelift and is wonderfully bright with almost total skylights everywhere so makes shopping a pleasure in the cold Spring weather. Also the fact that it is across the street(Rideau St.) from the market with lots of great shops (Kaliyana) and restaurants ( Eighteen, ie 18 York St.) that are wonderful and leave us loving Ottawa! The front desk staff are wonderful and actually welcome us there as if this is home, which it is for a few days... The hotel is starting it's much overdo renovation. The top 3 floors have been renovated and the bottom 3 floors are in progress I think. That is not obvious by noise level or anything. The front lobby looks very contemporary and smart, the restaurant is comfortable and food decent. The bar in the lobby is a welcome and cozy place. Actually I just saw online that the Novotel in New York has the same room design as the Novotel Ottawa. It is not exciting but has a lite headboard which adds a bit of bling. This is a chain hotel but the staff make it good! The price is right which keeps us coming back!
"Nice Hotel in Downtown Ottawa"
This is a nicely appointed modern hotel located right downtown right next to the Rideau Centre. Easy walking distance to anyplace downtown, near the Byward Market, Parliament Buildings, Rideau Canal etc. Was extremely convenient for meetings I had on the same property. My room was exceptional for a very reasonable price. The restaurant offers delicious meals at reasonable prices and a nice atmosphere. And you can grab some food in countless restaurants nearby in the Market, or at the food court in the Rideau Centre if you want lunch or frugal supper meals. The staff were courteous, friendly and professional. 5/5 based on this lat visit.
"Great location, average stay"
Comfortable room and good service. They offered to upgrade my room for no charge which was nice when I checked in however I ended up looking out onto a roof with no view and there was construction above me which was loud at times. The location however is unbeatable. You're right in Byward market pretty much and walk out on the Rideau Mall. Walking distance to parliament and great restaurants and shopping.
