"Poor Customer Service! "
My boyfriend and I were there for a business trip for one night, upon check-in, Jesse, the Front Office Manager who was processing our check-in notified me that my CC had declined, shocked I asked him to run it again but same message appeared on his screen, he advised I give my bank a call, which I was happy to do so as I was very worried as to why my CC had declined. After speaking with my bank it turns out they had voided my current CC and were in the process of sending me a new one, but did not let me know that my current CC would no longer work, this would now be a problem as that was the only CC I brought on our trip. After relaying the message to Jesse, I asked if there was anything we could do? Cash deposit, Debit deposit? Being a Regional Assistant General Manager for both Starwood and Hilton chain, I was hoping for some awesome customer service and some help in my situation as I have been on the other end many times. Now I completely understand Hotel Policy and so on and so forth, now my boyfriend and myself are both business professionals, appropriately dressed and well presented, even ready to give a large cash/debit deposit. We had been travelling all day and couldn't wait to get into bed, and this entire check-in process ended up taking 1 almost 1.5 hours total. Jesse's advice was "there are other hotels in the area". Being an AGM for 2 large chains, that's not the type of message I would want my staff relaying to our customers. Alongside his advice, he did not offer any assistance just persistent on the fact we get a working CC or fill out a 3rd party authorization form. Please note this is also at 8 PM where all banks are closed and my hands were tied. Fortunately I was able to get a 3rd party authorization form completed and we were able to check-in. The room was alright, very outdated and the bathroom was tiny. The next morning, I asked for 2 tooth brushes and toothpaste to be sent to our room, they arrived right away and the housekeeper was very friendly! However just as we were about to leave, my boyfriend noticed that the toothpaste expired in June 2016!!! Blah!!! I was very disappointed. The wifi was also very very slow and laggy. Things happen, I totally understand, I was in the industry for many years but when things go sour right at check-in even the littlest things that happen afterwards don't sit right! This was our first trip to Sandman CCC and it will most definitely be our last, we choose it because of its central location but next time we will be following Jesse's advice and checking out what else is located downtown Calgary.
"Far Fall From Grace"
This hotel has an ideal location. Right Downtown Calgary & The LRT Line is literally right outside the front doors. It has large heated underground parking and small side lot for larger vehicles outside. Upper level pool & hot tub accessible by elevator or escalator, There's a Moxie's & Bar In house, as well as a Tim Hortons/ McDonald's/ Subway & Max Convenience store right across the street. And TD Centre is within walking Distance. Sounds ideal? It very much used to be! I started using this hotel in October 2010. I was impressed with little things like the condition of the property/restaurant etc. The lobby used to have these beautiful colour/light accents on ceiling. Little things count. This February 2016 was my latest stay. 6th time at this location. Usually about once year. Let me say that this hotels central location no longer warrants the price charged. Because this hotel is right downtown it's pricey. And as a Maintenance person for the Past 10 years, this property has slowly deteriorated BAD. My view of this Sandman location has slowly gotten worse and worse, witch is sad as they had a 5 star rating in 2010. Words do not describe the hotels condition in February 2016. It's outdated, rundown & dirty. Not the lobby, parkade, pool, hotub, restaurant, rooms, hallways, stairwells, elevators, key card system etc. Are in good condition. Everything is rough and falling apart/old/broken, or not functioning at all. By the looks of it it seems as if they don't employ a maintenance staff anymore. The entire building needs a major renovation from top to bottom. Even the in room decor/beds seem spent. It amazes me the Sandman Branding hasn't been stripped from this location. As a Canadian owned and operated business this hotel is not living up to Sandman standards anymore. I've attached photos of the room we were given. There's multiple issue's. None of which I would have rented a room to a paying guest. People work hard for their money! Should be some value/worth for spending money/choosing your location over others. I almost wonder if this location changed owners over the years. Far fall from grace from what used to be a very good hotel. See potential based on location etc. But location doesn't warrant the price or property's current shape! CHANGES NEEDED BADLY!
"Average city centre hotel"
Sandman is centrally located, within the free train zone. Those same trains do produce room noise even on higher floors. Reception staff were helpful and efficient at all times. Toiletries are provided along with tea/coffee in the room and aircon(which was fairly inefficient). Wifi is free and fast. The lifts are painfully slow leading to possible long waits. There are no room safes and the old fashioned safety deposit boxes are small and narrow.....not really up to the job. There is a restaurant on site (which we did not use) I cannot comment on price as our stay was booked as part of a road trip.
"Good location but outdated hotel"
Great location is what Sandman has going. If you are looking for a cheap hotel in City Center this maybe for you. The hotel needs some serious updates - old carpets, elevators, Interiors, AC, etc. Got a queen room and it's small - no space to go around the bed. The bathroom is fairly small too. Coffee maker did not work well. TV remote only worked for channel down. Overall fairly disappointing.
"Convenient City Centre location"
We stayed here for one night at the start of a week long tour through the Rockies. The hotel is 'corporate' in style, the rooms clean, spacious and quiet. WiFi in the room was free, fast and reliable. Check-in was efficient and friendly The tour group had a standard plated breakfast which was freshly cooked and plentiful. I would assume from this that the standard of breakfasts in the hotel was very good. It was only a short walk to all the main city centre attractions, such as the Calgary Tower, with the City Light Railway stopping close by. There's also a small 'Chinatown' area a few blocks away, with plenty of eateries available.
