"Traditional setting, very friendly staff, in the middle of a hutong close to subway and major tourist sites"
The service we experienced at Redwall Garden Hotel was the best hotel experience we had throughout our eight day three city stay in China. The staff was friendly and very helpful. Ms. Lu was exceptional. She even stopped to assist us when she came across us on the subway. The staff always gave detailed instruction on how to get to tourist sites even down to weather report and even provided umbrellas. The staff purchased our tickets to Xian for us since we were unable to because of our trip to the Great Wall. The room was great, very comfortable beds, very spacious, excellent bathroom. We were really impressed with the handwritten welcome note and fruit basket waiting for us. Redwall Garden Hotel is located in the middle of a hutong. This gave us the authentic Chinese experience we wanted. The courtyard is excellent with red lanterns, bamboo bushes and water fountains. Four days a week there are local Chinese music and plays which surprised us on our second night. The restaurant caters to both Chinese and western dishes with an excellent atmosphere. Right outside on the Main Streets are local street food restaurants and shops. One of the best help we got from the hotel was when Ms. Lu gave us a two page list of local restaurants and streets we should visit. Since it was our first time in Beijing this saved us a lot of time and helped us enjoy Beijing fully. Red Wall Garden Hotel, Beijing became our bench march for judging hotels throughout our stay in China and we continued to Xian and Shanghai. We stayed at bigger and grander hotels but none lived up to our very personal and excellent experience we had at the Red Wall. We would do it all over again. Thank you Red Wall and Ms Lu.
"Great location, great staff"
Stayed at the Red Wall Garden for 10 nights and enjoyed every one of them. The location is ideal as within walking distance to many attractions and about 150 meters to get onto the Subway. We used the subway to get around - it is exceptionally cheap and you get to know it pretty well after a couple of days. The girls at the front desk had some travel cards which they lent us. Just had to top it up and go - very convenient. The reception staff (actually all the staff) we came across were extremely helpful and full of good advice they help make our Beijing trip a success. The hotel itself is located in a Hutong (old area) and is quite traditional in style. We had meals provided in our package and you had a good selection of both western and eastern. It is a little (not much though) dearer from some of the alternatives but worth it for the relaxed atmosphere it presented. Note: If stairs are a problem then make sure you get the ground floor as there is no lifts.
"Highly recommended, wonderful atmosphere"
If you are looking for a break from the American airport style hotel, this hotel is sure to please! We arrived exhausted at 10pm off our trans-Pacific flight and the hotel opened its dining room so we could have delicious fried dumplings and cold beer in the garden seating area. What a great welcome! We enjoyed the hotel breakfast and ate dinner there two other nights after long hot days of touring the city. We had a family room on the 4th floor, with a king bed and smaller bed in an alcove for our daughter. Service was delightful and there are beautiful common areas for reading, staying in touch on your pc (good wifi) and just relaxing. There was traditional music in the courtyard. The hotel itself is on a hutong (a narrow lane in an old neighborhood). Our van driver appeared to access the entrance easily enough despite some maneuvering. Good location from what we could tell; we were fortunate to have a driver taking us around. Also,we were two families and a friend traveling together (7 in all). I originally encountered some push back throughout China when I tried to reserve a room for 2 adults and 2 kids for part of our group. However, China has had a one child policy until recently, so I'm thinking that's why rooms for families are geared to a family of 3. Once I wrapped my brain around this obvious fact, I reserved 2 rooms for 3 and a single room for our friend. This hotel offers roll away beds, so we were able to convert a double room into a triple.
"Great 4 day visit at Red Wall Garden Hotel"
I just finished a 4 day stay located on a famous hutong near the Forbidden City and the Wangfujing shopping district. The staff was very friendly and helpful ; special thanks to Lu, the tour assistant who was very knowledgeable and Mr. fun, the driver we hired through the hotel to take us to various locations. The hotel restaurant is very good; if you can get a room with breakfast buffet included, take it without hesitation. There is an outdoor dining area where music accompanies dinner on specific nights - another very nice experience. Overall, the Red Wall Garden Hotel at 41 Shijia Hutong is an excellent hotel with very comfortable rooms, an excellent restaurant, and a friendly and helpful staff.
"Charming, Authentic, Special"
Are there better hotels than the Red Wall Garden Hotel in Beijing? Absolutely. Are there more authentic hotels in Beijing? Without a doubt. Is there another hotel in Beijing that provides a perfect match of authentic traditional Chinese hutong architecture/style and high quality service in an ideal location? I highly doubt it. Our family of four (kids ages 13 and 11) stayed 4 nights in the 2 bedroom/2 bathroom Red Wall Suite in June. Our room number was 2407 on the 4th floor. The quality of the room is not five star. The room was a little rundown, and not as clean as one would expect. That being said, the hotel makes up for this flaw with a unique charm and authenticity that makes it special, especially when considering the cost. The location is central and excellent. It is easy to walk or take the metro to restaurants and most major attractions. The beds were extremely comfortable and the hotel was very peaceful and quiet. Everyone slept great. The AC worked extremely well. Everything in the bathroom worked well and was spacious. My primary complaint was the limited light over the bathroom sink. The wifi was unreliable in our room, but worked perfectly on the third floor lounge area, which was extremely comfortable, quiet, and a great place to hang out at any hour. The service at the hotel is very high quality and everyone was extremely friendly. The food served at the breakfast buffet is not extensive, but is plentiful and high quality. We tried just about everything over the four days and it was all delicious, especially the Chinese options. We did not eat dinner at the restaurant, but it was busy every night. Our son turned 13 while staying at this hotel and the hotel recognized his birthday with a hand written note and beautiful piece of cake with fresh fruit. I am giving this hotel 4 stars because it is simply a little rundown. That being said we had a fantastic experience at this hotel and I highly recommend it if you are looking for a high quality boutique hotel with an authentic Beijing experience. If you are looking for a fancy high rise modern style hotel with all the bells and whistles, this hotel is not for you.
