"Honeymoon paradise"

   20-08-2017
What a fascinating place this was! It was the perfect way to end our wonderful Honeymoon. We arrived in Pemba airport, not knowing too much what to expect as I had let my husband decide on the honeymoon but I love surprises and let’s just say he did very, very well. We were picked up and drove for about 40 minutes. I first noticed how natural and untouched Pemba was compared to Stonetown and Unguja. I was immediately intrigued by what lay ahead. Then we got to a town and harbour. The car drove as far as the water’s edge and we boarded a speedboat. We were then ferried away. I simply loved the sense of adventure. It was about a 10-15 minute ride and then we pulled to a wooden pier. It was like something from Robinson Crusoe. The huts blended in so well to the surrounding I barely noticed them as I came in. When I disembarked from the boat, my glasses fell in the water. Entirely my own fault, I should have put them away but Ramon reassured me we would find them. Ramon, was just lovely. He welcomed us with a drink and brought us to our honeymoon suite. As we walked along the path I started to take in my surroundings. Natural was the first word I would use. Nothing looked out of place. I began to wonder how this place came to be. We then arrived at our suite, words escape me as to how to describe it. It was just beyond anything I could have imagined. There were two wooden houses, one for us to sleep in with a bathroom and the other; a dining area on the bottom and a relaxing area on the top with a sofa. We also had a plunge pool too. Oh and did I mention the beach was on our doorstep? Just paradise! My sunglasses were long forgotten, me and my husband enjoyed some bubbles from the top of our reading area as I like to call it. When we came down, I saw my glasses on the table. One of the diving crew had dived into the ocean to find them. Talk about going the ‘extra mile’? I knew from then on that this place was quite extraordinary and that I was going to love my time here. The food was fantastic. Breakfast was always in the dining area. There was a good choice of menu which was great as we were there for 7 nights. What was great, was that you could just tell them if you wanted bacon and eggs if that was all you wanted. The staff were fine to deviate a little from the set menu if you didn’t fancy the full breakfast. Flexibility is always appreciated. Lunch was always at the pool. I loved lunch times. The club sandwich was my favourite. The veggie wrap is really good too. The chips were just delicious. I am actually not a chip person so this is high praise indeed. I found myself ordering them even when they weren’t part of the dish I had ordered. We were hooked! The cocktail bar overlooking sea was amazing. I highly recommend coming down just before six to get a nice seat to watch the sunset. We just loved our evening sundowners. Always one of the highlights of our days here. Dinner was a moveable affair which I loved. It could be at the pool, on the beach or in the dining room. I love that element of surprise, there was always a choice of starter, main and dessert. The food was always very varied and tasty. The dining and bar staff were just amazing. So lovely and accommodating. I liked the fact that there was a tipping box (voluntary and only required at the end of the stay) as I feel it is much fairer that way as lots of work goes on behind the scenes too. What I loved about Fundu Lagoon was the relaxation element. You could do as much or as little as you wanted. Having come from a safari of 5:50 wake up calls and as magical and as worthwhile as the game drives were, this was a pleasant change of pace. I would highly recommend this as post safari stop or just a general break away from everything. We did partake in a fishing adventure at sea, a dolphin safari, a snorkelling excursion and a sunset dhow cruise. These activities were great fun and the staff were again, fantastic. I must mention Filbert. He was such a character and lovely to speak to every evening. He organised everything for us. He has an amazing team at the diving team. We loved the nature here. We would often see monkeys in the trees, we would hear bush babies at night. We also saw the fruit bats flying. Towards the end of our stay, at reception I found a book explaining how Fundu Lagoon came to be. I spent the morning glued to the story. As I suspected it was a very interesting one and it just added an extra element of extraordinary to the place. We recognized many of the staff in the book. We had briefly met Ellis, the owner too. The amount of work and vision needed would have been immense but here Fundu Lagoon stands today and what a place it is! The book explained everything from how the furniture came to be to how the location was discovered and everything in between. I loved the African art and furniture throughout the resort. I also noticed the Arabic and Indian influences along the way which is a nod to Zanzibar’s rich history. This place was our honeymoon paradise! We have beautiful memories of our stay. We will definitely return in the future.

"A Magical Resort"

   06-08-2017
Myself and my wife visited Fundu for a week at the end of March this year, following a safari in Kenya. We were on our honeymoon and it was the perfect destination to go to after a safari. We loved everything about Fundu; the resort itself is located on a beautiful secluded beach, the food is of an extremely high quality, the service was also excellent and the staff themselves are very friendly and helpful, they constantly went over and above to ensure we had the best stay possible. The glamorous beach huts are also fantastic and spacious, and we particularly enjoyed our candle lit dinner on the beach on our last evening. It is a truly magical place and we hope we are luck enough to visit it again some time! Thanks again to everyone at Fundu for making this such a wonderful trip. We would absolutely recommend Fundu to anyone looking for an amazing experience. Mark and Hayley

"Love this place"

We loved Fundu Lagoon. All of the structures here blended in very well with the environment - it didn't feel like a 'cookie cutter' chain hotel. The food was excellent as were the cocktails. The meals aren't always served in the main restaurant which we liked - sometimes by the pool or down at the beach. We also liked that there was a happy hour out on their jetty during sundown. The staff were well trained. Plenty of little spots around the hotel to just sit and have a drink or read. Although Pemba is a predominately Muslim island, the hotel is secluded enough that we didn't feel inappropriate in our swim wear while sunbathing or walking on the beach. It was a beautiful quiet resort while we really did feel like we could get away from everything. I would highly recommend it.

"Simply amazing!"

Everything about Fundu is amazing. To start with you arrive to the resort by speed boat and then are welcomed by the friendly manager, Ramone. We arrived after 10am and were immediately taken to breakfast were the staff were friendly and welcoming. The breakfast choice is great and caters to everyone. After breakfast we were taken to our room when we noticed we had been given a free upgrade to the 'superior suite' which was phenomenal: huge terrace with a plunge pool with private beach access, beautiful room with hardwood floors and additional duplex terrace with sofa and sunbeds and chairs. Other points to mention include the large infinity pool with a great view of the ocean, the jetty bar where they serve happy hour cocktails and the tasty food. All food was delicious and locally produced and the service was really good. We also took a snorkeling trip to neighboring Misali island which had beautiful coral and fish and had some beautiful and quiet beaches. Again the staff were friendly and well-trained and we enjoyed this morning trip out of the resort. Pemba has a lot more forest cover than neighboring Zanzibar and that adds to the atmosphere as you definitely feel more secluded and in amongst the wildlife which included numerous bush babies and monkeys. I would definitely recommend this resort as I imagine it would exceed most people's expectations.

"Probably the best resort we have ever visited."

From the minute we stepped onto the speedboat at Mkoani Harbour on Pemba Island we knew we were about to experience something very special and we were not disappointed. Fundu Lagoon mixes style, comfort and luxury perfectly. We stayed in a beach access villa which was comfortable, kept immaculately clean through our the holiday and really created a feeling of being at one with nature. The food is amazing, especially the seafood. During our 7 night stay we were treated to a private dinner on the beach, sunset dining on the jetty and an amazing beach barbecue on our last evening. The attention to detail and the use of local sustainable products and produce is constantly evident as you walk around the resort (barefoot on the sandy paths). We took a half day snorkelling trip to Masali Island, a first for us, and were blown away with the condition of the reef and the bountiful variety of tropical fish we saw, for divers this must be one of the top places to visit on earth now. Last but not least the staff. Ramon the manager was fantastic, always available for advice and keen to hear the highlights of our day over a sundowner at the jetty bar. In fact all the staff were friendly, helpful and attentive and I want to make a special mention of Kessy and Filbert who are both genuinely lovely people. We will certainly have to go a long way to beat Fundu Lagoon and we do hope to be able to return before too long.
