"The Best Barefoot Beach Hotel in Africa"
Given that we are lucky enough to own a private villa on the Indian Ocean, we appreciate a great holiday experience and know what 'great looks like'! Fundu Lagoon delivers every time......from the location, the vibe, the comfort, the diving, the cocktails, the guests and the staff. And probably the best tree top pool in the world. Sure, there are more luxurious properties if you like hermetically sealed air-conditioned rooms, marble, and hotels that could be 'any place, anywhere'; but if you want a genuinely luxurious 'Robinson Crusoe' experience in Africa, then Fundu Lagoon has to be one of the best on the planet. We have visited many times, and we think Fundu just gets better, especially under the management of Ramon and with Filbert leading the bets dive team on Africa. The owners obviously had a unique and challenging dream......luckily for guests they turned that dream into reality.
"A true paradise"
Getting to Fundu is not easy, but well worth it (even if you miss your connecting flight on the way there!). You arrive on speed boat and climb onto a jetty that seems to stretch for miles, with only a small glimpse of what is to come. The resort is built into the local surroundings using traditional building methods. Ramon, the hotel manager, was there to greet us and ensured that we were able to relax from the moment we stepped onto the island. Our tent was airy and well kitted out with great views out onto the ocean. The bed was comfortable and we loved the open shower area. Everything you need is provided, including international plug adaptors and insect repellent. The pool area is lovely, with a fantastic team on site to cater for all your needs throughout the day. Views from here are spectacular and there's a great selection of meals on the lunch menu. Our favourite time of the day was sun downers at the Jetty bar. The sun sets right in front of you and before you know it you have had 3 bowls of home made crisps and stars are twinkling in the night sky. Dinner follows after with a lovely selection of starters, mains and desserts - we were there for 10 days and not a single item was repeated on the menu (in fact, we were quite disappointed not to see a repeat of the amazing pork belly!). The restaurant team are attentive and provide an excellent level of service. And then on to the best part... the diving. An amazing team, headed up by Filbert, provide a professional and highly tailored dive experience. The reefs are brilliant, the visibility great and due to the very experienced team you are are guaranteed to see something interesting each time. One of us qualified during our stay and Filbert was a perfect instructor - calm, considerate and knowledgeable. Each dive is unique, Filbert comes around during sundowners to discuss the next days diving. Nothing is too much trouble - special site requests, last minute changes - whatever you want it can be accommodated. Overall, we loved our stay at Fundu and were very sad to leave. The staff in particular left a big impression on us and we honestly cannot say we have experienced such great service anywhere else in the world. We will definitely be visiting again. Our only hope is that Fundu remains a secret paradise, largely unspoilt and visited by only a small number of lucky travellers each season.
The first time we heard about Fundu Lagoon was in a book called "Diving de luxe" which was given to us as a present by some friends. Once we saw the pictures of this small resort and read about the diving we knew one of these days we will go there! Well, we just got back home after staying at Fundu Lagoon for two weeks. We did not want to leave this small beauty. Fundu Lagoon is built in typical African style. By now you can hardly see most of the buildings anymore once you arrive by boat. It is well hidden behind trees and bushes. The Reception as well as main restaurants do not have any windows. So it is all open and airy. Forget air-condition, everywhere you only find fans. The accommodations are all tents. In February/March it was pretty hot and the air humid so it took us some time to get used to it, and yes there are mosquitos but you have a mosquitos net over your bed and the resort provides you with great mosquito protector. Just ask for it, they have it everywhere ( your room, bar area, Front Desk). Everybody working at Fundu Lagoon (from Manager Ramon to the local village people taking care of your tent) as well as everyone at the diving base are so friendly and helpful. They are always smiling and ready for a small chat. The food is outstanding. Most of the times in the evening you have a set up menu where you choose of two appetizer, tree main courses - one meat, one fish and one vegetarian, as well as two desserts. If weather permits it they set up dinner either at the beach, pool or jetty. At the beach and jetty you have barbecue with meat and seafood. Great lobster and if you believe it or not at no extra cost. Where do you find this anymore! Most of Fundu Lagoon's guest stay between 3 to 4 nights. Longer stays are not that common. Well I guess if you "only snorkel" then it is understandable. Due to the large ebb and flow every 6 hours snorkeling from the beach is almost impossible and there is no real housereef around. Fundu Lagoon offers snorkeling trips to Misali Beach - snorkeling there is supposed to be really great - we never did it. However the diving here is outstanding. Compared to the Maldives it is only your crew and dive buddies diving there and not another 3 or more boats with divers. Filbert and his team are doing an fabulous job. Whenever possible they took us to some different diving spots. Most of the time we dived with Medi and he's got "Eagle eyes" and spotted all those special fishes, snails and so on for us. There might be one improvement for the diving base - if we are really picky: NITROX would not only be appreciated by the divers but I guess would also be a big improvement and surley more healthy for Filbert and his team as well. Anyway if nothing else occurs we will be back again in 2019. Thank you all: Ramon, Filbert, Medi, Faa, Charls, Ninja and all the others - sorry our name memory is really bad - for making our stay with Fundu Lagoon unforgettable and spoiling us.
"The Real Deal – Brochure Picture Perfect"
Let’s start with what you need to know. First, if you have any reduced mobility, you cannot go to Fundu Lagoon. The site is very hilly, lots of stairs and all walking paths are in soft sand. Secondly, the Wi-Fi is restricted to the reception area and only has the strength to manage e-mail reception but not file downloads. If you need documents before arriving - e-books, films, work documents . . . . download before you arrive. The upside to this is NO ONE is sitting in public spaces with cell phones or laptops. The “Robinson Caruso†promise of remoteness is real. Now, to the most important. We have been to the most exclusive resorts in all corners of the world. Fundu Lagoon is in the top 3. I manage a global financial brand and never could have expected that I could remove myself from the world as easily as I did in Fundu Lagoon. The site is spectacular . . . unexpected . . . untouched. There is zero light pollution – not even the distant lights of a cell tower and the silence is deafening. The place crawls with hermit crabs during the day, monster giant crabs on the beach at night, cheeky monkeys that come to play on your terrace without aggressively or begging, bush babies that screech in the night. There are some neat insets to observe like colorful spiders or butterflies, but honestly, no pests biting you all day. Of course, we used bug spray at night. There are sand flies as some have reported so come with hydra-cortisone cream, but if you don’t lay on the wet sand and just rinse yourself off, there is nothing to worry about. Just plan in advance and think. The food is varied and tasty. Lunch and dinner move around during the week including seafood buffets on the beach or barbecues on the boat jetty. There is never a moment to get bored. Misali Island which is 15 minutes away is spectacular. Snorkeling is good. Dolphins abound. We didn’t dive but apparently it is the Mecca for divers. Last but not least, the staff is lovely: well-trained and sincerely friendly. Fundu Lagoon is one of the only places we have visited where every picture you take looks just like the brochure – the real deal. Out of this world. PS: we stayed 2 weeks in a beach suite which made all the difference but every guest is treated equally.
We have just returned from 8 wonderful days at Fundu Lagoon and can’t recommend it highly enough. We stayed in a superior suite on the beach, with its own plunge pool and huge amount of space to relax – it was heaven – very peaceful and very private. The bedroom was huge, very comfortable, beautifully light and tucked into the undergrowth. We loved being amongst the monkeys, whilst also being right on the beach. We dived a lot with Filbert and the team who were excellent. Top quality new equipment, very knowledgeable dive masters who were very relaxed but meticulously prepared and the dives themselves were stunning. The diving suits all abilities and group sizes were always very small. We found the dolphins before breakfast on the safari boat, which was a great start to the day, and we loved swimming off Fundu and also around Misali Island. We had a very successful days fishing and the chefs prepared some sashimi for all the guests that evening at sundown. The food was always delicious – we particularly enjoyed the beach bbq’s and private dinner put on outside our hut on our last night. The staff, led by the excellent Ramon, were attentive, always extremely friendly and swift to answer any question or request. If you want to get away from the world, in a beautiful place, and have the choice of being totally lazy or very active then this is the place. We will certainly be returning for another super relaxing holiday soon!
