"Rustic Charm and Serenity"
My wife and I stayed here for 5 nights at the beginning of March. If you are expecting manicured lawns, a choice of restaurants or multi-channel TV's in the bedrooms this is not the place for you. If you like rustic simplicity, staying in a thatched cottage set in 40 acres of managed woodland inhabited by monkey's and elephant shrews it's perfect. All the staff are really helpful and friendly and nobody loiters for a tip. The dinner menu is limited but the food is delicious and the home made bread is wonderful. My wife enjoyed an excellent massage and thought the staff were very professional and well trained. We had a great snorkelling/BBQ day out with the boys at Safari Blue who were very health and safety conscious. The singing and drumming on the cool box was great fun. Finally Michael the Manager is very personable and regularly invites feedback from all the guests.
"Wonderful stay - so relaxing - must take the boat trip to the private island"
I stayed here in November and thought I'd already reviewed this hotel but missed it. So sorry; guess the holidays got in the way and I forget to do it! The hotel is fantastic. Just amazing. Each room is an individual "hut". Mine faced the ocean. I have no idea what they cost but the suites were FABULOUS. I had a tour of them when they were unoccupied. Just spectacular. Interestingly the one that I think is the fanciest is one I, personally, wouldn't like. The entire bathroom is outside. I just kept thinking about the bugs but others might love it- I mean shower, tub, toilet, etc. all outside! The other suites had some elements of it outside but not all. In any event, would recommend you check them out and see if you can make it fit your budget. They were gorgeous. I was with a tour group and the food was included and it was delicious. The staff was SUPERB. They must have a great training program. As others commented, you see bush babies at night by the bar which is actually an old boat (ingenious design). The 5 of us took a boat trip to a deserted island and the staff made us a BBQ with chicken, fish, squid, shrimp, etc. etc. etc., salads, drinks, wine, OMG it was delicious and beautiful. Saw dolphins along the way and we went snorkeling too, from the boat, before we got to the island. Once we got to the island we snorkeled from the beach there also. Just fantastic experience. The only caution is that there is no AC. Usually in a place like Fumba that's no big deal but we were there when there was NO breeze AT ALL and the night time low was 78. I thought I would die of heat (and I'm from Houston so that says a lot). I actually had them turn the hot water heater off to my room and just took cold showers 3x a day to cool off. Took one right before bed. There was a ceiling fan but it was still very warm. It was fine in the end and I'd stay again but I think men tend to be even hotter than women so a man or a couple sleeping next to each other might not have made it work as well. They did have other fans, I believe, they could bring in the room. So, just a cautionary tale. :) In the end, I'd still stay again, just want to give the real deal in this review. Thanks to ALL the staff for their outstanding hospitality. Hope to see you again soon!
"A little piece of heaven called Fumba Beach Lodge"
After touring East Africa for nearly one month, our O.A.T. Tour ended at Fumba Beach Lodge. If this was not the end to a perfect tour, I don't know what could have been better. First, the lodge is directly on the Indian Ocean. Water temperature was approximately 80-85 degrees and calm. Perfect for swimming. The lodge is spaciously set against a backdrop of jungle plants and coral paths. Monkeys and Bush Babies filled the trees. Beautiful white sand beaches extended as far as the eye could see. Okay. Enough about the atmosphere at Fumba Beach Lodge. What I really want to talk about is the staff. Amazing people doing an amazing job to make our trip more pleasant. It all starts with Michiel Coolen, the manager. He was hands on from the room selection to the restaurant to the dive shop and every place in between. A transplant from the Netherlands nearly seven years earlier, he never left East Africa. Good thing because he ran the lodge like a well oiled machine. On top of that, his selected staff included: Joseph; Hassan; Stella; Moses and Julius. Each, outstanding in their jobs to make us feel very comfortable and at home. The lodge provided luxury accommodations with our own private terrace, porch and beach access. A double upgrade as Michiel called it. Beautiful beach front just feet away from our room. The room included a huge bathroom with large bath/shower and a unique outside shower open at the top for a natural feel. Included in our package was a snorkeling/boat trip and picnic on a remote island in the Indian Ocean. Hassan, our dive master, was great and showed us some amazing reefs with many tropical fish and large clams. The picnic was grilled fish, shrimp, calamari and chicken. Perfect for a restful time after snorkeling. This was at the top of our list of hotels during our stay in East Africa!
"A Wonderful Retreat"
What a wonderful find. I can't think of anything we didn't love. Accommodation was great, staff were all, without exception truly amazing and made our stay extra special. Food was great. Great location, peaceful and quiet. We felt like we had received special treatment but were assured by the delightful owners that everyone received the same care and attention. Woken up by monkeys in the morning, warm seas lapping on the beach 10 yards from your bed. Hermit crabs, Bush Babies & Elephant Shrews. Great spa for relaxing and the dive centre staff looked after us really well too. Thanks to Edwin, Michael, Maggie and all their team for looking after us so well. We'll be back.
Me and my partner stayed at this lodge at end of climbing Kilimanjaro. We wanted to recharge our batteries before returning home. What we got was first class service. The staff are super friendly and always helpful. The manager Bacari was attentive and assisted in many things such as day trips. The food is a set menu each night but delicious. The accommodation is individual lodges and tastefully done out in typical African style. There is wildlife running round the grounds such as monkeys but they are used to us humans and cause no problems. There is a dive centre on site offering a variety of sea bearing activities and a spa if you want to relax. We up graded and go our own private beach and if this is available when you go it’s worth doing as it really wasn’t that expensive. There is a happy hour each evening from 5-6 at the Dow Boat Bar where all cocktails are $6. You can watch the Indian Ocean sunset and as the sun disappears see the bush baby come out to feed on mango by the baba tree. It’s a marvellous place and one I’d love to go back to. They even leave you a story at bed time each evening when they prepare your bed whilst your at dinner. Don’t worry about the little lizards they are harmless and eat the mosquitoes.
