"Peace and quite"

Last stay of our trip to Tanzania and Zanzibar. And I must say it was the best end I could dream off. Very nice and calm place. Great hosts (Casper and Edwin, many thanks for the stories at the bar) Rooms are spacious and very clean. Great view at the Indian ocean while relaxing at the pool or on the chairs in front of the lodge. Friendly staff and great food. For dinner always choise between meat, fish or vegetarion food. I will be back here one day.

"Complete tranquility"

We were welcomed by caspar, he is the manager of Fumba. He explained everything in a calm manner. After that the stay in fumba beach began. Very friendly staff, clean rooms and very good food. Everyday they check if everything is in order. I can hihgly recommand this lodge. If you want peace quiet and a beautiful view this is the place to be. Tha ks edwin and casper.

"Not worth it. Much better places to stay at same cost."

Our family of 6( 4 teenagers) had a fabulous 3 week holiday in Africa and decided to end it with 5 nights in Zanzibar in April even though we were travelling in the 'rainy' season but this didn't deter us. We got a 5 minute light shower one lunchtime and within minutes it was very hot and sunny. Weather was fabulous! Lucky us. We spent a couple of nights in Stone town then planned 3 nights at Fumba. We chose Fumba on the recommendation of someone we know who had stayed there 3 years ago. We had an ok rate for half board in low season. On check in the kids were shown to an adjoining bungalow (11 & 12 I think) whilst my husband and myself waited for an upgraded "baobao' suite to be cleaned for us(6). It was the one closest to the bar and I was a bit concerned with the level of privacy from the outside. However we had lunch and spent an afternoon by the pool and exploring the property. Our initial impression was a 'quaint' location but property in urgent need of renovation. Very little maintenance appears to have gone on. The pool was ok but needed retiling. There were cracked and loose tiles all over it. Photos do not show this. It was swimmable but untidy. Many bugs and ants and dead insects floating in and around the pool. Pool towels were old, stained and musty smelling. Eventually our room was ready and we were shown in. My...what a disappointment. It was not 'clean'...grit sticking to your feet, big crack in floor and broken away under main door to reveal the ground. Door didn't slide closed properly. Shutters filthy and jammed up with leaves and dirt. Bathroom fully outside and open to elements...ok if you have an inside toilet but not this room. Bath was dirty and unusable. Shower floor was covered in leaves and mildew as you'd expect from an outside facility. Looked like it hadnt been used or cleaned in ages. Towels similar to pool...old and smelly...but...the bedding/mattress was the worst I have seen in any hotel! A threadbare stained sheet directly on to the old musty smelly mattress. Quelle horreur! I approached Edwin, the Manager/part owner and he said new sheets would come the next day. I agreed with this. However I asked to be moved to another room...and this was supposed to be one of the best rooms???? We moved to room 2 which was better...marginally. It had an inside toilet. We enjoyed a very good evening meal then went off to bed. I sent my husband to get another sheet as there was no way I was sleeping on years of other peoples sweat and dirt without a mattress protector. I cannot believe a 'hotel/lodge' of this supposed standard would present a sheet directly on to the mattress. However the night was long as I tried to sleep but awoken with bugs and a 'worm' crawling on me. Next morning got up early, spoke to Edwin and advised him we were leaving and he was good enough to give us a refund for our prepaid and unused nights. We didnt want to end our holiday on this. We negotiated the same rate and inclusions at the Stone Town Serena and were treated really well in a beautiful surrounding. Clean fresh smelling towels and bed linens makes a huge difference to how you feel and the quality of your sleep. Cracked tiles and a bit of dirt can be forgiven. However Fumba needs to drastically reduce its prices or better still, spend some money on maintenance. Stairs to baobao bar lookout were rickety, baobao bar fridges were rusty, mildewy inside and need replacing. Cushions were stained and new mattresses needed asap. Pillows like bricks. We had 3 rooms and none were good. Most of the staff we met were lovely and friendly and I feel they were very aware that the standard wasn't good enough but its out of their control. They felt sad for us. There seemed to be a 'disconnect' between staff and management.

"Fabulous Fumba !!"

This is a totally amazing place. 10 nights here on honeymoon and we both fell in love with the place and the people . The staff are brilliant and do everything they can to make your stay totally fabulous. It's rustic luxury , sipping a cocktail on your handmade lounger watching the monkeys play in the trees is a most memorable experience. The weather was kind to us with only a few downpours although these turned into spectacular storms !! The food was better than we imagined it was going to be and the choices on the set menu were plentiful to please everyone even a fussy veggie like myself ! Our room was basic but spotlessly clean and clean linen and towels always available. Stella , Youseff , Patrick and Mr Bushman 505177844394are a credit to the resort always going out of their way to ensure we had an amazing day. Also Hassan and Maggie at the dive centre are brilliant too. The management Team are always on hand to have a chat and share a beer making you feel like part of the family. Can't wait to return next year .... thank you Edwin , Casper and all the staff for a brilliant holiday !!! Xx

"Just Perfect"

I'm really late writing this review as we visited Fumba Lodge in February. We travelled as a family ranging in age from 8 - 80!!I'd been looking for accommodation and nothing just seemed right until I found Fumba and I knew we'd be ok.Right from the first email contact with Edwin things went very smoothly - he's very patient answering numerous questions and just wants you to have a good time - didn't know he was the owner at the time! This place is absolutely lovely and our whole family had the best time. The pool area is lovely right on the sea edge - the tide is out in a morning but the water is lovely for swimming later in the day. You're made to feel so welcome - it's like one big family. Casper the manager comes round everyday making sure you're ok and asking if you need anything etc. The food here is lovely - different menu every night - you can have your table on the beach or in one of the more private areas - just fabulous. A big Thank you has to go to the staff - they are fantastic and nothing is too much trouble - they made a big fuss of my dad - so for looking after ' babu ' Thank you. I can't wait to return and just trying to sort out when - soon I hope Fumba
