Over Fumba Beach Lodge

De eigenaar heeft persoonlijke aandacht voor de gasten hoog in het vaandel staan. Zo dineert u op wel vier verschillende plaatsen tijdens uw verblijf, in het restaurant, aan het strand en één avond op een verrassende plek. De gezellige lounge wordt opgefleurd door fel gekleurde kussens. Er zijn regelmatig dansoptredens. De kamers en suites zijn ingericht met lokale materialen in vrolijke kleuren.

"Bit of a let down - flatters to deceive"

My wife and I stayed here following our climb of Kilimanjaro. We were looking for a nice place to relax and recover following our trek. When we arrived at the lodge we were met by the manager or so he claimed. He then took us to our room and showed us around. My wife and I were going to tip the people that carried our bags to our room - but they never turned up in the room and the "manager" stood waiting for his tip. So we tipped him. We had no idea where our baggage was but when we opened the sliding front doors there is was sitting there. So we dont know if the tip got shared or not. The room was fine enough - but not extravagant by any standards. Bedding was a bit worn as was the towels. The cleanliness seemed fine and toilet and shower room were fine. The door lock seemed to have an issue when the manager took us in - but he fiddled around with it and said it was fine. In regards to the lock a couple of days later I got locked in the room as the lock stopped working - this was then replaced by a lock from another room. The food was actually fine - and the staff very accommodating and friendly. The eating area however could have done with some pest control. There were flies everywhere on the food - ants all over the place on the tables - going into the salt and sugar etc. I know from experiencing other countries that there are things that could have been done to help with the flies and ants. Cant complain about the pool area looked lovely and it was nice relaxing on the beach on the sun loungers. There were some lovely areas for just sitting relaxing and having a drink. The bar was well stocked and happy hour was nice - despite the boat bar not seeming to have a barman for half of it - service was very slow when making cocktails - other drinks were fine. We were party to a what seemed like a Taxi scam - prices received from the so called hotel manager were highly extortionate - we went to Stone town for around $45 one way - but coming back easily managed to get a taxi for $20. So something was amiss there. We also learnt one evening that the guy who met us on the first night claiming to be the manager was not the manager - as a dutchman introduced himself as the manager. There is a wifi zone - but this barely worked and did so intermittently so dont rely on that for wifi. This place has the potential to be a lovely place to stay - but a bit of work is required - hopefully these improvements will be made in the near future.

"Very nice hotel - if you are looking for white sand however, look elsewhere"

We went to Fumba to cap off our honeymoon and we can say that it was an amazing experience. Fumba is located at the west side of the island, so the white beaches are not to be found there. However, we had our own private beach in front of ou baobab suite, which offered us some quiet relaxing without disturbance (or at least not from local salesmen). The room was amazing, with our outdoor shower, bathtub and even our toilet was outside. Please be aware that the bathtub was not very clean and we could not use the tub as it seemed to be broken. The shower however was good enough to cover for that (way to hot to take a bath anyways). There is no real beach at the hotel, apart from the private beaches of the suites and a smaller beach for the other guests. If you want to swim in the ocean, please note that due to extreme tides, most of the day you need to cross several 100m of coral to get there. The food was very good, the waiters were friendly and the choice of food very differentiated. On friday's a swahili night is organised where local food is served, which is delicious. I can certainly recommend a stay at fumba beach lodge, but it is not the standard zanzibar experience. No real white beaches, the ocean is a long walk over coral during the day due to the tides. But the stay was wonderful and relaxing and we would go back anytime!

"Heaven exists "

We spent a week at Fumba and had the best time. Such a friendly community and the views are simply incredible: so many shades of blue. It is ideally located on a very quiet corner of the island so we didn't get any touts, just friendly and welcoming locals. It's also under half an hour from the airport which is appreciated after a 14 hour flight! Stone Town is about 30 min away but you have to book an expensive taxi to go there as public transport (local dala dala) is a bit hit and miss. The best part of our stay was the meals where the freshest food was offered. There's a breakfast and lunch à la carte menu

Stayed here as some R&R after trekking Kilimanjaro. Was disappointed with the quality of the room ( none Ocean front twin - no sign of outside showers, lovely bath etc mentioned in other reviews ), shabby pool ( looks great in photos but cracked tiles etc ), cleanliness of food area ( an insect fest at breakfast ), but this pales compared to the taxi scam the hotel plainly have going with certain taxi drivers. We asked on day one how much for a cab into Stone Town ( 30 mins away ). We were told $40 each way, which seemed high but we struggled to get hold of a local firm direct. So , we get a cab into ST and when we try to pay the guy he refuses to take the money on the basis that he would pick us up later. At this point you simply know you are getting ripped off. We ended up having to just put the $40 down in the cab and getting out. The driver was pretty intimidating about it. Later that evening after about 30 seconds gentle haggling we agreed a $20 fare back with another taxi. So, the hotel must be aware they are overcharging people by 100% at least. Even more disturbingly, as our cab pulled away into the traffic the original driver appeared alongside and started having a go about his being 'our' driver. How he spotted us I will never know, but it shook me up. The hotel are plainly in on the scam as the guy who introduced himself as manager when we arrived ( he is not the manager, incidentally as a Dutch guy introduced himself a couple of days later as the manager who has been sent over by the owners/investors to review the place ) told us that the fare would be $40. Not impressed and not a little unnerved by the whole experience, Avoid.

"over priced"

We have stayed in 5 lodges/hotels in the Zanzibar Archipelago and found that Fumba Lodge was over priced. The Lodge is in need of a refurbishment. At the price that we paid we didn't expect thread bare bed linen and towels . On a positive note our evening meal was always lovely , well cooked and well presented . We saw some beautiful sunsets . All the staff were extremely helpful but needed more development and coaching in their field . The water sport centre was fantastic and is run independently from the main Lodge .This Lodge is in a stunning position with great views and has tremendous possiblities
