"Great Location... Poor experience with some staff"
We were here celebrating our anniversary and we had a very mixed experience. The day we landed I thought this place was definitely getting my 5 stars, but over the next 3 days I had enough experiences to get me down to a 2. The Good: 1. The Location is AWESOME!! Very close to Male (But this does mean you hear each and every flight going in and out of Male Airport). 2. Very beautiful and well maintained beaches 3. We stayed in a Beach side Villa. The room was awesome, right on the beach and was very well equipped (Loved the Nespresso Machine, thank you!!). 4. The Bathroom deserves special mention. It was one of the best bathrooms i've ever used.... Very well done. 5. Good live music on most days. 6. Enough activities to keep you engaged for 3 – 4 days. The "Ok": 1. We met a few staff members who were extremely friendly and served with a smile (Room service, Staff at Thai and Arabic Restaurants, etc.). However, we also had a fair share of staff who were borderline rude in their behavior. The guy that checked us into the hotel made us feel like we were such a burden for him to deal with that we asked him to cut short the tour and get us to our rooms. Some of the receptionists also behaved slightly rudely. However, there were quite a few folks (Guys who took us fishing at night and on the sunset kayaking trip) who were AWESOME!! 2. The food was very mediocre. The food at the Thai restaurant was plain horrible. We also tried the food at the Cafe and at the main restaurant which were better. The Arabic restaurant had awesome food and service. Most of the food looked very pretty though. The breakfast was a good spread but got pretty boring by the 3rd day. The Bad: 1. We had decided to go snorkeling on the day of our anniversary. The guy who took us out Snorkeling from the Majaa recreation center completely ruined our day. Neither my wife nor I are strong swimmers and we asked this guy for sufficient practice. Hardly a couple of dips in the very small pool and he thought we were ready for the ocean. He did not prepare us in anyway on what to expect in the ocean or on the swim out. He tried to get us to go on a private tour with him rather than a group (obviously this was much more expensive). We politely declined as it was only 2 other people going out with us. These guests had gone snorkeling before and had more experience than us. I don’t know if the guide got pissed at us for not choosing to do the pvt tour, but he stopped paying any attention to us. He basically took us on to the beach and set out before we even got a chance to wear our fins and snorkels. I tried signaling to him multiple times that my snorkel didn’t seem to work correctly. He just tried some super quick fixing and almost dashed into the ocean without checking how our gear was functioning. He eventually left us half way in the ocean and did not bother to check on us. My snorkel eventually got completely screwed up. My wife and I had to swim back from the ocean on our own without the guides support. The little snorkeling that we did manage was breathtaking but thanks to this crazy guide the overall experience was ruined. 2. We had taken a Breakfast and dinner package through hotels.com. I felt this was a complete waste as the hotel had almost everything “NOT†included in this package. You get free food at bfast and at buffet tables only. But the drinks including Soft drinks and Mock-tails were excluded from the package and you had to pay for them. Food at the other restaurants was discounted, but none of the menus clarified this piece at all. More than how much we ended up paying, it was something I really did not want to think about while on vacation and paid a premium for it, but was nevertheless put in a spot where I had to deal with it. I even asked the guy at Check-in if I could just upgrade to some all-inclusive rate and pay fr it. However, due to some policies he said they could not. I have traveled to many countries (Kenya being the most recent), and might have expected a lot from a resort like Kurumba in terms of Customer service. Unfortunately, it did not even come close. I do hope this review helps future travelers avoid some of the bad experiences we had so they can better enjoy their holiday.
"Perfect fit for our family"
Firstly this was our first trip to the Maldives. We are a family consisting of mom and dad plus 7 year old daughter. We chose Kurumba for its proximity to the airport. Dine around all inclusive. Good snorkling and room tipes that suit our needs. We also wanted a bit of luxury and good service. Kurumba delivered and we are dreaming of our next trip! This was truly our most amazing holiday ever! Prior to our arrival i had a few questions/requests which were promptly handled by Judit Rosa( the sales and marketing manager)She also came to look us up on our first day and see us of on our last. Thank you Judit. Kateryna(the front office manager) helped me with room requests and prebooking of restaurants as well as excursions. She even organized for a teddy on my daughter's bed with her name embroidered on the shirt! Thank you Kateryna you are a star. Upon arrival we were quickly whisked away on their speedboat and within 10 mins or so we were on the island What a suprise to be greeted in Afrikaans (our home language) by Mr Ryszard Majewski( the gm) He was very visible during our stay and always stopped by for a friendly chat. Check inn was fast and efficient( we did preregister) with cool towels and cocunut icecream! We were lucky to get an early check inn for which were very thankfull. We stayed in a deluxe poolvilla (nr 277)on the eastern side of the island. The beach was quiet and private on that side with minimal foot traffic. You do have distant views of the airport island ( not Male). We knew that beforehand and took our binoculars and had fun watching all the boats and luxury yachts. Our back yard was literally a few steps from the shoreline and we often saw black tip reef sharks swimming in front of our room! The room itself was a cool oasis after a long day in the hot sun!! Our room had a separate living area which they converted in a bedroom for our daughter. Bedding was comfortable with quality linen. Bath towels and beach towels were provided and replaced when needed. Aircon worked well and bathroom had aircon as well. The bathroom is not open but has big glasswindows and doors leading out to a private courtyard with decent sized pool and outdoor shower. There is an outdoor shower which we used daily and a covered daybed plus 2sunloungers . Bathroom amenities included shampoo, conditioner, bodywash(Molton Brown) handsoap plus various smaller things like toothbrushes a disposable razor earbuds etc. You also get a beachbag, flipflops , mosquito bands and plug adapters in the room. No need to pack a truckload. Our room was cleaned twice a day and service was always done discreetly when whe were not there. Our roomboy Samon did however pop in to come and hear if whe needed anything. The only thing i missed and found strange was no full length mirror. I hope someone will try to fix that! We were on the Dine Around all Inclusive and i can really recommend it for anyone. We ate in all the restaurants ( will review each one seperately). The food was really top notch and if you are a foodie you will love Kurumba. We cant go on holiday with out a few drinks and the drinks are really good quality. There are 2 beach bars and Kandu the main bar. This was our favourite spot. We often went there for coffee after breakfast and later on a mojito and proseccu. They have undercover seating(you can have lunch here as well) and nice loungers in the sun. There is also an icecream bar. Thank you to everyone who patiently waited while mey daughter tried to make her choice!! All the bar staff are really great and the always greated us by name and soon new our drink of choice and even the fact that we liked our mojitos made with Bacardi. Big shout out to the bar manager Mr Upul who looked after us the whole time. He was always there and run a tight ship! Even when he saw us at other places in the resort he had time for a chat and enquired if we were ok. Also the legendary Mr Akter. I dont need to say anything else. My husband had many lovely chats about cricket with him and he loved looking after our family. They do have nightly entertainement at the bar. We loved the bodu beru. They also had a very good live band who got us dancing and a dj playing all the new releases. We chose Kurumba for the fish life and we were not dissapointed. We saw loads of fish including black tips , Parrotfish , lion fish , the infamous titan triggerfish, moray eels, unicorn fish , angelfish , nemo and dory! The corals are bleached (as is the rest of the reefs after el nino) . But the housereef is easily accessible and goes around the island. The beach is lovely and white fringed with palm trees( like the bounty advert) Here and there is some coral bits but whe never had to wear beach shoes. We loved the guys at Majaa recreation. Please make time to see all the excursions on offer. You can also pick up your free snorkling gear there. Jo jo and Iru was great fun and thank you Glen for helping us with special requests. We did night snorkling with the wonderfull Rizaah . If you can do it. We also did a Manta trip which was amazing. We swam with 3 Mantas!!! The water was very choppy but the guides took good care of us. My daughter went to the kids club on a few occasions and loved it. She even pulled a face at me when i came to fetch her. They had activities like splash pad, mocktail making , cupcake decorating and pizza baking. The spa was lovely and tranquil. We had their signature massage and i can recommend a visit to the spa. Wifi was good and free and we were able to stream videos as well as make whatsapp calls I just want to say my sincere thanks to all the staff at Kurumba. With out you the hotel would be an empty shell. The staff are genuine kind and you all helped us to make memories that we will talk about far a long time. Thank you Kurumba. We will be back Regards Kruger Family
We arrived at the kurumba resort fresh from our stay in Abu Dhabi. We were taken to our Beach side bungalow after upgrading from a superior room.It was absolutely lovely. We have been to the maldives twice before and to us this one is the best so far.Okay the beach is a bit narrow but as nobody uses it to relax in the sun as most prefer to go snorkeling plus you get your own allocated sunbed and mattress. There is some aircraft noise on a regular basis coming and going from the airport but I found the seaplanes were the loudest but to me no problem. There are seven restaurants, all we found very good, At this point I would advise you get the Dine around option. The two we particularly loved was the Thila restaurant who serve contemporary food i.e.steaks,salmon,lobster(extra) and the new Thai restaurant. The staff, like all the staff at the Kurumba, were brilliant, when they came to our table they wanted to get to know us. As if we wasn't going to a restaurant it was more like being invited into their home and by the time we left the Kurumba it felt like a lot of the staff whether at breakfast or dinner had become friends especially Kate at the Thai restaurant and our quietly spoken waiter at the Thila restaurant who's wife has just given birth to a son(must apologise as I have lost his name). Overall we loved it Tony332
"Good for Families"
We chose Kurumba due to proximity to the airport (we arrived too late for sea plane), the variety of restaurants and reviews. Kurumba is a lovely island, clean and well maintained, the service is ok and the staff are friendly although somewhat laid back. We had a problem as there was confusion with our dining package. We had booked all inclusive in the U.K. but the resort had put us on a "full board all inclusive" which meant we had all drinks included but we could only eat in the one buffet restaurant for our meals instead of the specialty restaurants. This took three days to resolve, after having to call the UK. This spoiled the beginning of the holiday as we didn't really like the buffet restaurant. The quality of the food was ok but the variety wasn't great. This restaurant doesn't have any walls and therefore no air conditioning which made it too hot for us. So if you book all inclusive (and I recommend you do!) ensure that you are clear about the package before you travel - the "Dine around all inclusive" gives you access to all restaurants and the service/ food/ atmosphere is much better. Our room (one of the older rooms/beach bungalows) was ok and the housekeeping service was good. I liked the fact that the bathroom was outside and we were on the opposite side of the island to the reception area, which meant the views were better. Our room did seem a little tired as it was older, which took away from a luxury feel. We also had our own area of the beach, which we loved. Kurumba allocate the beach sun beds by your room number, which we felt was an excellent idea - no need to worry about getting a sunbed, although some did seem bunched together. The beach was wonderful and water temperature approx 26C. The wifi was excellent everywhere and the air conditioning in our room was excellent. This is also very much a family resort and so you need to be prepared to hear the children if you want to "relax" by the pool. As we went as a couple, we found that we didn't want to use the pool area very much, which was a shame. A second pool area would have been nice. So I wouldn't think Kurumba is the best option for a honeymoon, although, you can book a villa with a private pool. You can see Male in the distance from one side of the island but we quite liked that. The speed boat transfer was great and we felt the excursions were reasonably priced. We swam with Manta Rays, which was amazing and I would recommend doing if you get the chance. I didn't like the Dolphin trip (although everyone that we spoke to seemed to love it). For me it felt as though we were hounding them with five boats chasing them - just didn't feel right. Make sure you take suncream as it is very expensive to buy in the shop. The water sports facilities were very good and we were impressed that they didn't charge to use the equipment, even paddle boards and kayaks were included. The snorkelling was excellent and we were lucky to swim with turtles on a few occasions. Overall, we had a lovely time and Kurumba is very good - we weren't "blown away" but we enjoyed it and we would recommend it to friends if I felt it served their needs.
"All you imagine and more!"
We spent 5 nights at Kurumba over the Easter holidays, such an amazing resort! We stayed in. Deluxe beachfront bungalow which was superb. The outdoor bathroom was a huge WOW! Large bedroom, plenty of space, clean, fresh and everything you need. The Bathroom, included a large bath tub, toilet, his/hers basins, shower cubicle plus the outside shower which was out of this world. The resort was well maintained, and there were many activities available to join in or not as the case may be. We enjoyed the snorkelling, glass bottom boat and the cocktail masterclass. I had been in contact several times with the hotel over the previous few months, all of which were quickly and efficiently dealt with, and our request for a specific room was able to be provided as was the early check in. Thank you. This made our time on the island so much more useful. I would recommend rooms near to Athiri bar, you get a lovely outlook, although a little bit more windy whilst we were there. The planes did not bring their us at all, and the movement of shipping is not a problem either. We chose dine around all inclusive, well worth the additional cost, and ate at a variety of the restaurants, all of which were great. Special mention must go to Kaxoo at Thila for her great hospitality and to all the staff at Thila who provided fantastic service and great bubbles at breakfast! We spent a lot of time at Athiri and enjoyed many a cocktail and beer watching the sun set. Thanks to Lucy and Lal for making our trip so enjoyable. I had great expectations of the Maldives, and this did not disappoint, in fact exceeded my expectations, it was a really relaxing, happy and fantastic holiday with exceptional service friendly staff from the gardners to reception to recreation team and lovely little touches all around the resort. Our only disappointment was that we missed the 'meet the management' party as we left that morning. We would have loved to let them know how wonderful the whole resort was. Have to make sure we do this next time! This is a truly amazing resort, all the staff are so willing to help make your holiday the best ever. Thank you all, we hope to return to your wonderful island next year.
