"A stay in paradise!"

To put it simply, our all-inclusive stay at Zilwa Attitude could not have been better! Our Superior Sea View room was perfect for our needs. The “beach hut” style keeps frills to a minimum but it was clean, tidy and the bed was very comfortable indeed. Housekeeping visited every day and, if the ‘Do Not Disturb’ notice was out, left a card to say that they had noted this but if there was anything we wanted we should call them – a nice touch. The hotel grounds are immaculately kept and the views out to sea are stunning. On the beaches and around the pools there is no shortage of loungers, all of which are in excellent condition. Whilst there are à la carte options for dining, it was hard to look beyond the buffet breakfasts and dinners at the Karay restaurant. Special mention must go to Chef Bababoo, his Sous-Chef Caulloo, Pastry Chef Bruno and their team for the fantastic food. The quality was superb and the range of dishes was absolutely amazing. Zilwa’s real magic lies in its staff. All around the resort you are greeted by smiles and friendly greetings – nothing is too much trouble. Finally, we were at Zilwa for my son’s wedding and we cannot praise the hotel enough for its efforts on this front. Everything was perfectly-organised and the ceremony on Gran Zil was wonderful. The small touches such as the music, the cake and the flower petal confetti made it all the more memorable.

"Trying to be all things to all people and failing….."

We chose Zilwa Attitude as we loved the style and ethos that was advertised with the hotel. After a week in an amazing 5 star resort in the South West with pure luxury, we were looking forward to somewhere that advertised itself as genuine Mauritian style, authentic food and laid back vibe. We knew this was a 4 star resort, so knew there would be differences, but the difference was a world apart and no way should Zilwa be labelled 4 stars in comparison. Firstly we arrived to Mauritius on our honeymoon, after being treated at the first hotel to two bottles of (real) champagne, a candlelit Jacuzzi bath, a 3 course meal on the beach with our own fire, £50 off their treatments at the spa, a special celebration cake and faultless service. Our greeting at the Zilwa was in stark contrast, the décor and the room was great at Zilwa, really nice style and vibe but that is where the praise ends. We were told to book in at the various restaurants the following day and to have the buffet tonight, which we accepted. However our main issue with Zilwa was the food and level of service, which even the basics they managed to get terribly wrong: • The buffet was of really poor quality, each night they had a theme, but this was impossible to decipher as there was such a variety of unrelated food. No matter what times we went to the buffet early on, mid-way through or towards the end of service, food had ran out/cooked dry and no one was replenishing any of it. • EVERY meal we ate out at any of the restaurants the waiters/waitresses would remove our plates as we were still eating or remove my partners before I had finished. This was appalling fundamental mistakes which really ruined every evening meal as you felt rushed and like they wanted you out of there. • We never had a choice of where to sit, they tried to cram everyone in next to each other and wouldn’t let you use sections of the restaurants even though it was early on in the service, as they would rather be setting it up for breakfast. The tables were so close together and it just made you feel like you were on top of each other. • The wine on the all-inclusive package is pretty appalling, the red was drinkable, but nothing in comparison to the previous hotel. The cocktails were ok though. • There is NO room service. Normally this wouldn’t matter, but I was very sick for 10 days out of my holiday with bronchitis, I had seen the Dr and was on 5 different medicines. I felt awful and didn’t want to get dressed up and sit in close proximity to other people and cough all over them, but when I requested to be moved to a table a bit further away to make the evening more comfortable for everyone I was told this wasn’t possible. • On the note of dressing smartly…there are signs and it is made clear long trousers and covered shoes are essential for men in the evening. I would say easily 30% of the men were either wearing shorts/flip flops or both and no one was brought up on it. Again this is fine, but scrap the rule totally as it makes a mockery of it. My husband would have much rather been in smart shorts and flip flops, but we were abiding by their rules which they didn’t enforce. • The one lunch time restaurant where you picked your own sandwich was appalling, we were on all inclusive, but had you not been you would have been charged nearly £8 for the driest baguette with no filling, I asked for tomato, ham and cheese and it still came without the tomato. Just everything Zilwa did it felt like they didn’t listen/follow through. • The staff were a real mixture, the reception staff were lovely and reasonably helpful. The cleaning staff and boat house staff were friendly and seemed genuine. As for pretty much everyone else we met they were disinterested, made lots of mistakes, no explanations/apologies and appeared like they really didn’t want to be there. There were one or two waiters that stood out but the majority were below standard. • Some of the worst service we received was when we tried to book in for the different restaurants we were told they were fully booked for the next 3 nights, so for the first 4 days all we had was buffet 3 times a day. This was so upsetting and disappointing, especially as the food and atmosphere was so poor at the buffet. The lady in charge of these bookings was very brusk and lacked any level of customer service. My husband saw a section for honeymooners and queried why we weren’t being offered that. She looked up on her system and said she could see we were on honeymoon but we didn’t have that package so we weren’t entitled to any of those things despite paying for the most expensive room in the hotel. Her attitude was really upsetting and rude and made us feel so insignificant on what should be the most memorable trip of our life. • At this point we really wanted to leave the hotel and called our travel company back in the UK as there had been so many problems and it was starting to ruin our honeymoon. It took 5 calls of complaints from the UK to Zilwa to be acknowledged by the general manager. Then followed 6 phone calls from different members of staff trying to resolve the issues and help, which was great, but again would have been more professional to have been dealt by one individual. The manager insisted on sending up a bottle of champagne…which certainly wasn’t champagne. We then got offered one treatment at the spa, a free catamaran trip, a romantic meal on the beach and to be able to eat at one of the restaurants rather than a buffet. This was a kind gesture and slightly over the top when we got met at the restaurant by the food manager and seated at our table. All the other guests wondered why we were getting special treatment which wasn’t what we wanted. We just wanted the right level of service, kindness and care from the start which should be offered to all guests. The following day again we were met at the restaurant over breakfast and taken to our seats and that evening we had our special meal on the beach, this was by far the best food we had experienced at the hotel and we had a fantastic waiter. But again they ruined it by clearing away all the lights off the beach and moving tables and chairs at 11pm even though we had not finished because they were busy setting up for a wedding the next day. Then bizarrely after all this over the top treatment the following day and for the rest of our time there we were ignored, forgotten and the normal poor service resumed. • The hotel in my opinion does not have enough staff or staff that are trained to the same level and expectations, this is wholly a managerial problem. There seemed to be a lot of middle management who looked a bit lost and didn’t have a role to play and the rest of the staff carried on in their own style, there was no consistency. Other things I think are important to point out to other people considering this hotel. Obviously everyone goes on holidays for different reasons and everyone has different tastes, but had I known the below I would not have booked it as a honeymoon destination: • There are barely enough sun loungers and it is very much the place where people put their towels out at 7am to reserve the best spot. There were a lot of Brits here and a lot of people wanting to make the most of never ending food/drink no matter the quality, which there is nothing wrong with, but not the romantic honeymoon atmosphere we were hoping for. • There are weddings here every day, therefore as a guest and as a honeymooner you are low on the priority list for the hotel. Sometimes this meant parts of the beaches couldn’t be used and even some restaurants closed for the weddings. • The evening entertainment is loud, and when we were wanting to enjoy the peace and quiet on our balcony and use the hot tub, you could still here the music and karaoke even though we weren’t particularly near it • The local sega dancing and a few other acoustic bands were great and in keeping with the vibe. But I really didn’t appreciate the karaoke and bizarre music some nights til midnight, a cover to inspector gadget one night was a classically bad example. • We knew the beach/water at the resort was too shallow to be able to swim in, but we did regret choosing that, as at the first resort we were much closer to the reef and able to do some snorkelling and cool off in the water as well as missing the sunset on that side of the island and being in the shade by a certain time is something we would reconsider geographically. However we did not let our stay at the Zilwa ruin our honeymoon, we hired a car for 3 days and explored the whole island, went to some fantastic public beaches which were beautiful and very quiet during the week and then full of fantastic locals on the weekends having family parties. There is a public beach a 10 min walk from the Zilwa which I would really recommend on visiting, there was no one else there and we had the whole place to ourselves with only a few well behaved stray dogs. We caught the local bus to Goodlands, which is a great local town, full of life and the real Mauritius with a good market for presents. We also ate out at some fantastic local restaurants for some real authentic Mauritian food. In summary I just wanted to give some people a more realistic/differing view point to the hotel that seems to get decent reviews on tripadvisor, as had we known the above we would have chosen somewhere else. I am sure it suits some people and meets their expectations, but I would say for a honeymoon it is certainly not the best option in Mauritius in terms of service, quality, atmosphere, food and value for money.

"Excellent weekend <3 the pool just wow :) that effin view.. and being a foodie :3 damn i salute the chefs :* soon <3"

too much to say <3 the staff-the fnb manager ... they were all splendid peoples ... the ambiance - that friendly atmosphere - the locally spirits - our mauritian food <3 the typical mauritian setting in our room <3 <3 damn the outdoor activities <3 well well something to be cherished till death <3 had a great moment

"Hard to Beat"

Hard to believe we could have had a better time here. Hotel grounds rooms and set up were fantastic. Food was great all round. Staff could not have been better always attentive but not intrusive. Snorkelling trips were included which were great and paddle boarding was available but not as easy as it looks!. Good availability of kayaks. The views from the bar area are spectacular so post breakfast morning coffee was a daily highlight. The bike excursions were so underbooked that we had our own personal guide for both our excursions!

"Catamaran trip "

A fantastic first day of our holiday in Mauritius - a day trip on the Zilwa Attitude Catamaran - great views and snorkelling your own tropical island to explore , fantastic BBQ lunch and most of all a great crew - thanks to Jean- Frederic Andy and Gordy for a brilliant day - if your anywhere near you should do this
