"I just loved this hotel!!"

   02-12-2016
Zilwa is a fab all inclusive hotel in the North of Mauritius. I stayed here in May and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I stayed in a Family room which was a great size and in a good location. The rooms are very rustic in style with a nautical feel to them which I loved. One of the nice little touches was each room had a gift of a beach bag and flip flops which I used every day! The hotel has 5 restaurants which you can dine in all of them as part of the all inclusive (unless you have kids - one of the restaurants is adults only) and the food throughout was amazing!! One thing I did like was Grande Zil which was Zilwa`s private island where you could take the little boat across and have a BBQ for lunch and spend the afternoon there - it really was fab! There was always something on in the evening in the way of entertainment eg Sega show, live singers etc The kids club looked brilliant and there were always activities going on to keep the kids and teens occupied. Zilwa is only about 45mins drive from the Capital Port Louis and 20mins from Grande Baie which is only £27 round trip in a taxi from the hotel and the taxi driver will drop you off and wait for you. We took bikes one day and cycled right along the road to Cape Malheureaux to the Red Roof Church. The beaches along here are just out of this world so you could even take a pic nic along and chill for a while. All in all, I absolutely loved Zilwa and will definitely return with my family one day soon and would recommend it to anyone of any age!!

"Amazing place and fantastic service:) I have never experienced more helpful and friendly staff."

"Amazing Place! Beautiful views, fantastic friendly staff, and great food "

First thing you'll notice is the amazing view from the second you walk down the entrance path into the lobby bar! Incredible. We were welcomed in the reception with a cool towel to freshen up with and a local cocktail. Our bags were taken and we were allocated a room, as well as escorted there personally. The bags were brought by the porter, who didn't even hang around for a tip! The staff were incredible all trip, never felt pushed to tip, all really helpful and friendly. Jim at the bar had me a cappuccino ready every morning. The cleaners used to make towel art every day, something different. The rooms are rustic and chic, modern but feel traditional. The bare floor took a little getting used to but soon felt like home. Mini bar could have been better stocked, just local beer, Pepsi (no diet) and a couple cartons of fruit juice. Lovely walk in shower, modern fittings, plenty of space. TV channels are mostly French which was a shame, a few English channels but a bit lacking if you're bothered by it. Food was really good. Breakfast buffet is served at the Main restaurant called Karay. Plenty of choice for everyone, omelette station, fresh waffles/pancakes, cereals, yoghurts, breads, full cooked options of bacon, sausage, eggs, then there's fruit, pastries, cold cuts, salad, plus local Mauritian dishes which are Indian and French inspired... Coffee is all pretty good, cappuccino's are great. Lunch is either at the beach restaurant Lor Dirab, where there's BBQ and buffet, or you can order burgers from the grill. Really good quality too, much better than I would've expected. Pineapple in the burger was a nice touch too. Definitely order one! Or you can have sandwiches and paninis from the Kot Nou restaurant made to order. Served with fries. There's also a traditional BBQ option on there own island, called Grand Zil. You have to book in advance but they will take you over on a boat and you can enjoy the food while being serenaded by a staff member singing with a guitar... he was brilliant! Just don't walk back (you can cause the water is shallow) as I did cut my feet on rocks doing so! The little island itself is a slice of pure paradise. Exactly what you expect from a deserted island, so picturesque. If you want snacks, the Taba-J (tabagé) vans serve crepes, cakes/biscuits and ice creams from 3pm, as well as tempura style goodies like fried veggies and samosas. For dinner you can eat at the Karay again for themed buffet which changes every day, which had loads of choice and the quality is really good for buffet food. Don't expect food to be piping hot like some of the other reviews have complained about, because it's impossible to do at a buffet. But they do a good job of replenishing food. All the al la carte restaurants were great, but favourite was the Indian, Tadka. The Asian, Silwa, was also good. Kot Nou literally opened the day after we arrived, and it served more traditional Mauritian food. Presented beautifully and tasted great! Lastly, AI members get two trips to the Lor Disab evening which has a lovely setting by the beach at night. The menus for these all change on a Monday so make sure to visit more than once. The hotel is very tranquil, and relaxing. No need to get up at the crack of dawn to mark Sun loungers, even at 10am only about a third by the pool or beach are taken. Some people have said you need coral shoes to go in the sea, you don't. If you stay within the roped part of the lagoon there's not rocks or coral, if you go outside like I did you might come across some rocks so be warned! The sea is shallow, so nothing for swimmers, but you can take a boat out to snorkel free of charge. The glass bottom boat is worth doing on to, plus we got a kayak out which was fun. There's loads to do. The beach is nice, you get a few people selling local stuff like carved dodos, scarfs etc but they're very polite and don't hassle at all. Buy something as they're very well priced. The entertainment on the evening was ok. We're not usually bothered by it, but they put on nice bands in the evening in the main bar, and we really enjoyed the outdoor cinema clubs they put on by the beach. We don't drink, but the cocktails looked great, and they have branded spirits. The local beer is Phoenix and tastes good, like a sol/San Miguel. Try the almond milkshakes though, great! There's a stray dog, called Kevin, who wanders around. He's really sweet and friendly! It's a fabulous hotel with a really relaxed atmosphere. Food is great and there's plenty to do! You won't be disappointed going here.

"friendly. helpful staff."

Personal gripe, I do not like concrete floors. Our bedroom floor was discoloured, cracked and it's appearance was unhygienic. Also concrete shower floor could be very slippery. The activities offered by the hotel were excellent and much enjoyed. The air conditioning unit was very noisy.

"Honeymoon 10th-24th November "

   27-11-2016
First arrival a couple of hours early for check in but was welcomed with homemade sugar cane tea and towels. Invited to have something to eat or look around but we chose to stay in the bar area and enjoy the view we had been dreaming of since booking our honeymoon at Zilwa. Our routine was soon established: breakfast around 9:30am, sit in the bar with a coffee for a couple of hours after and decide what to do with the day in paradise. Hotel staff were very happy and friendly. Including gardeners working hard and still making an effort to say hello, to bar staff remembering our drinks and bringing them over before we even made an order. This is a hotel that treats you as an individual more than any other I have experienced. The hotel has chosen to be 4* to keep their philosophy instead of changing to 5* and losing the personal touch which is not encouraged in most places to keep it very formal. For a honeymooning couple looking to relax, this was just what we wanted. Big John talked to us on the beech and we took both of his main trips. The personal boat trip was one big memory for us and something we felt lucky to be able to do. The price with John is negotiable (by a small amount) so if you do want to make a small saving you can haggle a little. The 2nd trip around the island and swim with the dolphins was also fantastic. We hired a car for 2 days which cost around £70.00 towards the end of our two weeks. Easy to drive around the island and we never felt unsafe. If you are up for having a fun time with some island relaxation, island adventures and join in with the Island Attitude, you should book a trip to Mauritius and Zilwa Attitude. If you want to be waited on by very formal people in uncomfortable clothing and awkwardly working then look somewhere else!
