"Stunning Views but Poor Experience"
We were super excited to arrive to Sossusvlei Lodge, expectations were high as we were anticipating to arrive to the best place in Namibia. Well, expectations did not realised and to be frank, the stay was a bit disappointing and toned with impersonal service. We were staying in the family unit 149-148 that has a door between the two bathrooms. Strangely enough the unit 148 stinks like being inside a sewer (read: poop!). It is clear the lodge does not know what causes this issue and keeps on accommodating people to this same room inspire the problem. After a brief investigation from our side (yes, two engineers and a building specialist) it was clear there is a very specific fault that needs to be corrected or this problem will not go away (and lodge seems to think it is the shower drain but newsflash, it is not - do your homework and fix it). We got to change the 148 room to another, but only after raising our voices and addressing the issue aggressively - initially reception raised their hands and did nothing as they put it 'they are full'. So much for luxury stay with luxury price tag in a poop smell! Otherwise clean, newly revamped facility with nice rooms that need hanging hooks (especially there's non in the bathrooms), good standard level buffet food with lots of game available, overall service level is not so enthusiastic although evening dinner waiters were very good, curio boring and old fashioned, lunch good but man it was super salty, adventure centre works very well and people there friendly (the best in the place) - overall stunning views make up for otherwise quite impersonal below average facility and service.
After a horrible drive over the C27 we arrived on this Lodge. They gave us a drink and cool little towels to refresh ourselves before they brought us to our lodge. Our accomodation was neet and clean and we had a lot of space with a veranda at the front. Dinner is inclusief and when we gone to the dinner it was one big surprise. Sitting outside at the terrace we had a view at 4 BBQ area's one fish, one vegetables and 2 meat. They had about 10 kinds of meat and also zebra, oryx and kudu. Choose your piece and the cook grilled it in the way you like. Before thay had a huge table with different food and also for dessert they had tables with the most beautifull cakes. Add to this a very nice and sweet staff and you are in heaven. We were EXCITED about htis place.
You are really out in the desert here. The rooms are large and are separated like bungalows. Nice pool which is surprisingly cool. The bar is sort of odd. They don't sell wine by the glass. You have to buy a bottle. However, I only drank very good beer. The food is excellent, with plenty of game dishes. There is no TV, but that didn't bother me.
Overall, the stay was good. Staff were friendly, and the facilities were good, but it came up a little bit short of being "outstanding." Highlights for me were the location right next to the park, the friendly staff (although not all staff - some restaurant/bar staff were rather grumpy), and the amazing views. Few things that were disappointing: no double beds, they are all two twins pushed together. Very inconvenient for tall people. Rooms also get extremely hot, and the air conditioning unit is rather feeble. One other point of note: the resort seems to cater to very large tourist groups, who (while not the resort's fault, something to be aware of) can be rather loud and obnoxious and act as if they own the place.
"Stayed at the Desert Quiver Camp for 3 nights"
A beautiful spot and close to the park entrance. Very professional staff and wonderful situated. Rooms should have a bathroom with doors. The current room design is not perfect to allow for the necessary privacy.
