"Ok We just had Lunch...."
So after a hike on the dunes and an early morning with a meager breakfast we were debating between having lunch at the camp in the park or here. We are super glad we chose here. The property is lovely and feels like an oasis after a day walking on sand dunes. They happened to have a really fantastic buffet lunch. It was about 12 usd a person and boy was it worth every penny. Full meal, bread, soup, salad, desserts upon desserts. The food was spectacular (or we were starving). It was also very nice to see the property which is modern, nicely laid out has a lovely pool. The proximity the park is key for great photos and in hind-sight I would book to stay here or anywhere near the park gate rather than where we did.... Moon Mountain which was really too far away. Highly recommend the lunch after a dusty day on the dunes.
"Gateway to the Dunes"
Sossusvlei Lodge is right at the park entrance for the Dunes, and is a pleasant oasis in the desert. Accomodation is individual buildings, half chalet (bathroom, shelving, wardrobe) half tent (bedroom), with essential a/c over the bed. You can open the window coverings to let in air; however, you will also let in sand -- this is the desert! Meals are served buffet style, outside. For March, the sun had set as we sat down to dinner, and it was completely dark well before we finished. There is a wide range of game meat, and an oriental stir-fry station. Also a large selection of salads and cheese. We only had the salads without milk or creamy dressing -- they do stand for quite a while in the heat. Breakfast was available very early, so you can be ready when the park gate opens at sunrise. Buffet style again, and some inside seating with lights, and out of the cool, desert mornings. Even if you don't plan to go into the park at first light, you are likely to be woken by the queue of vehicles waiting, engines running, for the gate to open. There is a wonderfully cool pool to escape the heat of the day, but only a dozen or so loungers. The grass surrounding it is pecked constantly by guinea fowl. Sesriem is really only the gateway to the Sossusvlei Dunes in the park, and consequently people usually stay just 1 or 2 nights. The Lodge does have a range of adventure activities available, although we just drove ourselves.
"Location, Service, Activities, Food: Sossusvlei Lodge has it all"
A wonderful desert experience situated right at the entrance gate to Sossusvlei. After a loonnnggg drive, it is a such a pleasure to cross the threshold of this lodge and see a genuine welcoming smile hold a tray with refreshing towels and an ice cold glass of juice. Ahhh...life is good. A quick check in and we were led to our room, where our bags had mysteriously preceded us. When we made our booking, the lodge was fully booked (no wonder) and we were given the choice to upgrade to the suite. The cost of the upgrade was reasonable; but when we saw the room, we thought we had been UNDERCHARGED! It is a drop-jaw gorgeous room with amazing views over the desert. Go on an early morning hot air balloon safari one day and an outing to the Sossusvlei Dunes another. The lodge will organize everything. In-between, relax. Sundowners begin at 17:00 and there's a lovely deck over the bar from which one can view the surrounding desert. Dinner is a sumptuous affair with a buffet serving all sorts of game meats, as well as a rich choice of vegetarian options and yummy desserts. All the rooms at the lodge are air-conditioned - rather important in the desert. The Suite also has a small jacuzzi pool. Turn the lights out, sit in the pool and watch the star-surround desert skies. On cooler nights, share the gigantic bathtub under an equally grand skylight...
"Good stopover for dunes"
We flew in by light aircraft for a one night stay. Dinner was a barbecue outside with lots of the usual game meats. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There was free wifi in the bar and lounge. It performed well. You need to have a desert side chalet as this gives great uninterrupted views. The rooms are nicely decorated with a very spacious bathroom but no hairdryer. No soap was provided in any of the rooms. We were part of a party of 40 and all asked for soap, were promised it but never delivered. The nearby sand tunes and Dead forest were awe inspiring. However, we almost got trapped there for a few days when a sand storm came in but we managed to escape during a lull.
"Unfriendly Staffs. One is enough"
Sossusvilei Lodge and Resort. Guests stay there are usually purchase the all inclusive package with room and meals. The desert is very hot in the day time and the room A/C may not help because the bed rooms are made or tents and zipper. The tents make a lot of noise when the desert wind brows. The service at the restaurant need a LOT of improvement. The servers and greeters will ask your room number again and again and sometimes they will demand to see your room keys. They also were not very polite and forced you to seat inside. Actually Andrea for his ill manner. The fish and meat grill are not sanitized. They do not handle the raw and cooked meat separately. I like only their vegestable stire fire. Be sure to book the afternoon safari tours in the Nmin-Naukluft Park. Our PM one ends in having Champagne in the red cocks while the sun sets in front of us. I was told that there are no lions and is safe to walk around. In the morning safari, we had chances to walk on the big sand dunes (including #45) and the white clay pan called Big Daddy. Walking to the Big Daddy was too much for the elderly and families with babies.
