"A unique property in the middle of nowhere"
A unique property in the middle of nowhere. Go here to see amazing wildlife and sand dunes. Plus, it’s a really nice place. Each room on the property is a separate structure—no worries about sound from adjoining rooms. We were in the “modern†units (recommended). The rooms are quite large, especially the bathrooms. Huge shower, separate tub, dual sings, a wood stacking cube to keep your toiletries. Fluffy, big towels. Small room safe with non-standard instructions—read them very carefully and don’t miss the inside hidden red button to reset the previous guest’s code. There is no TV, no phones, and no Internet in the rooms. Internet is only at the reception and the bar. You didn’t come to the Nabib desert just to watch TV or cat videos, right? Buffet dinners include a large cold section and a made-to-order section with a separate meat grill, fish grill, and stir fry grill. The meat grill includes normal meats (beef, chicken, pork), but you can eat those anywhere. What you can’t eat elsewhere are the African meats: zebra, ostrich, impala, oryx, eland, warthog, springbok, kudu, etc. Recommended: ostrich, warthog, oryx. I bet you always wanted to try these. Minuses: No bars of hand soap, bring your own. The door to the outside had a glass window that was partially translucent, with no curtain! Prepare for the dawn sunlight to wake you up.
"Excellent food, really a treat "
In May we stayed at the Desert Quiver Camp which has the same owner as the Sossusvlei Lodge. The guest of the Desert Quiver Camp can have breakfast and dinner at the Sossusvlei Lodge as well. We had dinner here twice and it was wonderfull, the best meals we had in Namibia so far. There was a buffet specially for game meat, a great way to try out the different game meats. The terrace looks over a water pool, if you are lucky you can spot some game too. The staff was very helpfull, they even notified us that we had a flat tire. One of the guards was kind enough to assist us changing it. Because you leave for Sossusvlei in the morning, the Sossusvlei Lodge was kind enough to prepare a breakfast basket. This way you won't miss sunrise and are able to witness it with a full stomach! Nothing but praise for the Sossusvlei Lodge!
"Ok We just had Lunch...."
So after a hike on the dunes and an early morning with a meager breakfast we were debating between having lunch at the camp in the park or here. We are super glad we chose here. The property is lovely and feels like an oasis after a day walking on sand dunes. They happened to have a really fantastic buffet lunch. It was about 12 usd a person and boy was it worth every penny. Full meal, bread, soup, salad, desserts upon desserts. The food was spectacular (or we were starving). It was also very nice to see the property which is modern, nicely laid out has a lovely pool. The proximity the park is key for great photos and in hind-sight I would book to stay here or anywhere near the park gate rather than where we did.... Moon Mountain which was really too far away. Highly recommend the lunch after a dusty day on the dunes.
"Gateway to the Dunes"
Sossusvlei Lodge is right at the park entrance for the Dunes, and is a pleasant oasis in the desert. Accomodation is individual buildings, half chalet (bathroom, shelving, wardrobe) half tent (bedroom), with essential a/c over the bed. You can open the window coverings to let in air; however, you will also let in sand -- this is the desert! Meals are served buffet style, outside. For March, the sun had set as we sat down to dinner, and it was completely dark well before we finished. There is a wide range of game meat, and an oriental stir-fry station. Also a large selection of salads and cheese. We only had the salads without milk or creamy dressing -- they do stand for quite a while in the heat. Breakfast was available very early, so you can be ready when the park gate opens at sunrise. Buffet style again, and some inside seating with lights, and out of the cool, desert mornings. Even if you don't plan to go into the park at first light, you are likely to be woken by the queue of vehicles waiting, engines running, for the gate to open. There is a wonderfully cool pool to escape the heat of the day, but only a dozen or so loungers. The grass surrounding it is pecked constantly by guinea fowl. Sesriem is really only the gateway to the Sossusvlei Dunes in the park, and consequently people usually stay just 1 or 2 nights. The Lodge does have a range of adventure activities available, although we just drove ourselves.
"Location, Service, Activities, Food: Sossusvlei Lodge has it all"
A wonderful desert experience situated right at the entrance gate to Sossusvlei. After a loonnnggg drive, it is a such a pleasure to cross the threshold of this lodge and see a genuine welcoming smile hold a tray with refreshing towels and an ice cold glass of juice. Ahhh...life is good. A quick check in and we were led to our room, where our bags had mysteriously preceded us. When we made our booking, the lodge was fully booked (no wonder) and we were given the choice to upgrade to the suite. The cost of the upgrade was reasonable; but when we saw the room, we thought we had been UNDERCHARGED! It is a drop-jaw gorgeous room with amazing views over the desert. Go on an early morning hot air balloon safari one day and an outing to the Sossusvlei Dunes another. The lodge will organize everything. In-between, relax. Sundowners begin at 17:00 and there's a lovely deck over the bar from which one can view the surrounding desert. Dinner is a sumptuous affair with a buffet serving all sorts of game meats, as well as a rich choice of vegetarian options and yummy desserts. All the rooms at the lodge are air-conditioned - rather important in the desert. The Suite also has a small jacuzzi pool. Turn the lights out, sit in the pool and watch the star-surround desert skies. On cooler nights, share the gigantic bathtub under an equally grand skylight...
