"A magical break at Kinasi Lodge"
This is my second trip to Kinasi. I decided to bring two friends and the three of us revived our long-dormant diving skills with the help of the dive team led by Asheri. We are all over 70 and we could not have been better looked after. Asheri is a fantastic teacher, mentor and encourager and we felt completely safe in his hands, backed up by SIddiki, Puffa the dhow-captain, and the rest. And then, out of the water and back at the lodge, what could be nicer than enjoying the spectacular views over the bay, G+T in hand. The food is a joy, the rooms creatively decorated, (with lovely antique furniture in some of them too), and the bar, with its novels and books about the history of the area a real pleasure too. NB Kinasi is hilly and not ideal for disabled visitors. And it is basically a retreat for adults: there are no special child facilities and the pool (which is also used for diving training) has no shallow end.
Franchesca is the new manager and he is really kind and helpful. For example, our fan did not work and he had it fixed within 2 hours for us. The food is good but the desserts are delicious. You eat your meals outside (if you want) at nice tables set up with gorgeous views of the ocean. Affordable local wines are available. There are other lodges nearby that cost more where the staff may cater to you a bit more but the service at Kinasi is good and the vibe is very mellow and relaxed. Nets are provided to avoid insects. There is no air conditioning but the fan was all that was needed. Tips: If you have a chance, get a Thai massage from the wonderful masseuse. The place felt empty while we were there in January but tourism is down to Brittish Airways and other airlines' discontinuation of direct flights.
"All we expected - and more"
Location: 15 min on sealed roads from the airstrip. Within the national park, so the fee of 20 usd per night has to be paid on your way there (creditcards accepted at the nat.park office now). Bungalows spread over a failry big area. Many levels and stairs, so not very handicap friendly Rooms: The bungalows are spread out a bit. and many of them will not let you too much of your neighbors. We stayed in a seafront room which we were happy with. Nice big bthroom with good water pressure and hot water, shampoo/showergel. Towels were changed after a couple of days or on demand. Comfortable bed. Room has no AC. The fn located over the bed was a little bit too weak on lvel 1, and too strong and noisy on level 2 - wsh there had been a lvel 1 1/2). However you also get some air through the many windows, so most nights we could sleep well.Nice verandah with comfortable chairs and hammock outside Food: Buffet breakfast with eggs made to order. Set 3 course meals for lunch and dinner. Flexibility with meal timing. Food mostly very good, especially if you love fish - s fish and seafood was on the menue of 90% of the meals. And they know how to cook it! If you do not like fish, I am sure they can help you anyway. Vegetarians and allergies were dealt well with satisfactory. It happened a couple of times that they forgot, but then quickly fixed a alternative (like bigger helpings of side dishes for vegetarians) And they make very good desserts, especially the pies, sorbet and chocolate fondant. There is a wine cellar, with good selection of wines to reasonable prices. EVen arranged wine tasting one day Swimming: Pool area with deck chairs , sunbeds and umbrealls. Also sunbeds at the beach. Because of th shallow water, there is no swimming conditions at low tide. Dive centre: The boss of the dive centre will come around every evening to check what you will like to do next day. A list in the room tells about the options, if yo`d like to have some ideas in advance. They do have a clever snorkelling guide, and the whole crew of the dive centre behaved very proffessionally. Recommend also to visit the Chole island+village and the Kilindoni tour to see the fish harbour, markets and local life Wifi availale in the office area at a charge, worked well most of the time. People with fobias for insects will struggle all over Africa. Here I found the little centipedes particularly disgusting. The garden boys kept brushing them away from the path all the time. Nevertheless some made it to our veranda and even inside a couple of times. Hard to avoid, I guess Staff was friendly and polite alays. And have some lovely smiles :-)
"Secluded and Amazing!"
My husband and our two friends decided to stay at Kinasi Lodge for three nights of our 6 night stay on the Island. After a camping safari we wanted to treat ourselves and stay somewhere luxurious and this did not disappoint. The rooms were amazing and secluded, it felt like we were the only ones in the whole place! The cleaning staff and our room keeper, Judy, were amazing! The rooms were so clean and the beds so comfy. Our room, the Swahili room, was closer to the kitchen so there was some noise but we were barely in our rooms during the day so it was not an issue at all and it was very quite at night. The food was incredible. Our friend was celebrating a milestone birthday and when we notified Kinasi we asked for a simple cake at dinner. The staff at Kinasi went above and beyond and we were treated to the most amazing poolside barbecue. The staff then sang and danced a cake to our table. The cake was so good and our friend was so surprised. We treated ourselves to spa treatments at the spa on site and it was wonderful. Oy (spelling?) is an amazing masseuse and her energy is infectious. Our friends went on a dive with Ash and they said it was one of the best dives of ever. They said Ash was so attentive, helpful, safety conscious and knowledgeable. Thank you to the team at Kinasi for everything.
"Ups and downs but still good value for money"
The ups: Very good stay in a very pleasant set up. Clean and comfortable room. Amazing food and excellent snorkeling team (special thanks to Achiri and Sadiki). Good value for money (compared to other options on the island). The downs: Room a bit noisy because of other beach bungalows next doors. Management not very helpful when it comes to suggesting activities, they also forgot our special diet requirement (had to talk directly to the Chef once there, despite earlier emails and reminders to Management). Overpriced shuttle service from airport (as not private, we were 6 or 8 people but still paid full price).
