"Beautiful Property but poor service"

Stepping into the beautiful lobby I was quite excited about this hotel. After waiting an hour for a room in the heat I was less impressed. Rooms are small and getting service around the pool was tough. Staff not very friendly.

"Former glory"

This hotel has seen better times but I found that's what made it charming. Located at the sea shore with nice view from patio, conveniently located and friendly, helpful staff. Rooms are small even though the furniture seems to be from colonial days.

"Amazing staff, ambience - Paradise - Excellent Place to Stay"

The hotel is located along the beach, we went for an evening meal and to listen to Tarabe Music - It was a wonderful experience. Had the grilled king fish - cooked to perfection with chips (chipsey). Simply exquisite!

"Delightful staff"

   11-01-2017
Spent two nights at the Serena mid way through our holiday. The staff here are delightful, friendly, efficient and go out of their way to make you feel welcome. We had a lovely room with a wrap around balcony and sea view. It's a bit small and the bathroom was tiny but expected in such a beautifully renovated old building. It's full of character which is probably the kindest thing to say. We only had breakfast at the hotel which was standard hotel breakfast buffet fair. Okay but nothing special. We prefer to eat in local restaurants in the evening to get a feel for the local atmosphere. This is our second visit to this hotel. There are no lifts in the hotel but not a problem as the porters carry luggage and it's a maximum of two floors high. The air con in our room was efficient and the wifi signal was good. Nice compact pool area with easy access to an okay beach. Not the best one the island by far, but good considering you are in the middle of Stone Town. Hotel location is superb for walking round the town and in a very safe, well lit area. We very much enjoyed watching the locals on the beach - keep fit activities and a wonderful game of football. We would have given the hotel five stars if it wasn't for the actions of some of the other guests - a bit unfair on the hotel but it does seem that the hotel is used by a lot of people in suits who arrive in cars which stay parked in the drop off zone. It would appear that these guests objected to the game of football taking place on the public beach in front of the hotel. Armed guards arrived to break up the game. In the uk this would have caused a scene. Here the guys disbanded without a fuss. What a shame, they were having fun and not causing any problem. Most of the people in suits were morbidly obese and looked hot and miserable. Perhaps they were just envious of the fit guys having fun. However it was a shame that they spoilt the enjoyment of many for a few.

"Very good hotel, very pleasant stay"

   06-01-2017
We stayed one night in the Zanzibar Serena hotel, after a short week in a resort to spend a day in town before departure. We saw some very critical reviews and were a bit scared, yet were pleasantly surprised. Great setting, very charming and pleasant staff. Had a good (not excellent) dinner in the beautiful restaurant. The hotel is a bit old indeed, yet the qualification charming / historic seems more justified tous than 'worn out'. All in all, whilst not perfect, we'd qualify the Serena Zanzibar as a very nice hotel, worth a stay, and we were happy having taken the decision to leave the resort a day early, to have this additional experience.
