"luxury is not just about price"

Luxury hotel with lot of things to be commented and fixed. On one side the room is very comfortable (apart from the fact of central heating that is working AT ALL THE TIME, as a result i was not able to drop temperature from 26 Degrees C, with 4 C outside, in spite of the maintenance guy three times visit, they also wanted me to change room but all the rooms I visited had 26 C this is NOT ACCEPTABLE) , very clean and well mainteined and decorated. On the other side there is a TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE leak of english staff, the quality of english, both spoken and understood is EXTREMELY POOR. This is UNACCEPTABLE in such a class of hotel, with such price and international customers. TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE is also the business card of a night lady that I found under my room door one night. Again UNACCEPTABLE is the requested guarantee of 1000 RMB per night (130 Euro) requested at check in. This is a offence to customers, do you think somebody will steal your furniture or what ? Again if you try to excuse the guarantee with "incidentals" please remove the minibar from my room or lock it up, i have NOT requested it, thus I am NOT going to pay for it or guaranteeing for it. And the guarantee is higher than the price I paid for the staying. This is a very offensive policy also because these money are actually blocked on your credit card. One comment about breakfast .....35 Euro is a rip off....it is a offence . High quality ain't necessarily a ridicolous high price. No matter what you serve and the amount of food you display, 35 Euro is a incredibly foolish price for a breakfast. Last two things....it is interesting that when you arrive at check in the staff tries to sell you a upgrade of 40 euro per night, which includes breakfast and other things....when you decline they briefly give you the key and bye bye, just a regular customer, not worth more attention. Last one...I do not accept that I have to climb on car's bonnets and roofs to reach the hotel entrance door and that i risk my life when exiting as some guests prefer talking on the phone than paying attention to where they drive. In the end it is a pity , such a high potential miserably misused.

The room was very clean, the service was good, but instead of a plate of fruits which i'm used to when entering my room, i saw just a can of yoghurt. Apart from this, this time there is nothing to complain about. I will see how it will ne in Shanghai Sofitel Gyland from December 2 to December 9.

"Below my expectations but remains very good"

Not all SOFITEL unfortunately provide the same level of excellence around the world, and here SOFITEL WANDA beijing has for exemple a deep lack of reception staff It's not acceptable to have to queue so long whatever for check in or check out, which gives and first and last contact with the hotel which doesn't gives you a good souvenir Whatever the overall experience remains good the location, the facilities, the room, the food all remains at good level here, and I still can recommend to stop over in this hotel which provides 80% of what we expect in 5 stars hotel Check In ad Out have whatever to be improved

"A pleasant stay with a familiar brand"

The words to describe the lobby when you first enter it could well be 'designer opulence'. The spacious lobby and high ceiling exuded grandeur. The familiar signature Sofitel scent permeating through the lobby provided a sense of comfort and consistency in what one would expect from a Sofitel branded hotel. The hotel is located within a 5 min walk from Dawanglu (大望路) subway station on Line 1. Take Exit D for the fastest route to the hotel. Taxi drivers are more familiar with its location if you mention that it is located in the Wanda Plaza (万达广场). For food options, you have KFC and pizza hut a 5 min walk across the overhead pedestrian bridge opposite the hotel. Alternatively, from the side hotel entrance, you can walk 5 mins and find Chinese fast food at shops along the streets. We tried the piping hot Lanzhou Beef Noodles Soup (兰州牛肉拉面) on a cold night. Perfect, since it closes late. Ask the concierge for directions. For other Chinese food, there are a host of cafes and restaurants in Gemdale Plaza, a mall that is connected to the Dawanglu (大望路) subway station. Wal-mart is also a 2 min walk away. We stayed on the 26th floor - which is the club floor with lounge access a few steps away. The room assigned to us was located next to the suite. Unfortunately, a big group of people booked the suite, played mahjong and kept the door opened, whilst puffing away like chimneys. Although Beijing laws prohibit smoking in hotel rooms, implementing it can be tough. Guests are known to justify their behaviour because they paid for an expensive suite. Political and management will would help enforce a smoke free environment. I immediately reflected my request for a change of room. Within 5 mins, a manager apologetically provided me with the keys to another room 5 doors away. That helped - with doors closed, rooms are relatively soundproofed. The room had high ceilings and chandeliers, both in the bedroom and bathroom. Room design is tasteful. Toilet design is opulent. Beds are nice and firm. The pillow menu is also a nice thing to have. One fantastic plus point is that the air con/heating control is easy to use and works perfectly. The hotel has a decently equipped gym and a small yoga studio. The indoor swimming pool is beautifully designed. Like in the Sofitel hotels I have been to, the breakfast buffet is a big deal. You are spoilt for choice with many foods adapted to suit the local taste buds (as a side note, the Sofitel Bali had probably one of the best breakfast spreads I've ever experienced). At the club lounge, a more western inspired breakfast is served there in a more private environment. The happy hour between 5.30-7.30pm has a good variety of finger foods, hot foods cheeses and breads; many wrongly labelled though. The wines were above average in quality and I enjoyed them, especially the French wines. The staff are rather helpful, however, some may not be equipped or informed to help you but oblige anyway out of courtesy - a cultural issue inherent in China. Finding the right person to give accurate advice is useful. Ted Wang, the concierge supervisor was very helpful and thorough in his explanations and recommendations on sightseeing and food options. He also speaks English very decently. While overall service is good, I had a 'facepalm' moment that was hilarious yet disappointing. At the club lounge, I was referred to a housekeeping staff to help heat up a lava cake that I bought from outside the hotel. I repeated my instructions 3 times to first remove the cake from the plastic box before microwaving it. What I got in return was a warm lava cake still contained in a newly melted plastic box. This hotel is perfect for the business traveller who has a basic command of mandarin. Many staff members are not highly conversant in English. I speak Mandarin and so it helped immensely. However, this issue is not limited to this hotel in the Beijing area. Would I return? Definitely. It's central location, delivering on the Sofitel brand promise, responsive service and beautiful design are draws. One final note - we checked out of the hotel at 5.45am and were pleasantly surprised to find a section with a coffee machine, tea and takeaway boxes to pack croissants and pastries - specially for those who check out at ungodly hours. A nice finishing touch to top off a pleasant stay.

"Very good place business/ tourism"

On business, located in the business district not far from the CCTV building, about 15min by tube from Tienanmen squarem and about 30min from the Hutongs north of the Forbidden city. Breakfast is expensive, Excellent room, Comfortable. Went on business but could be a tourism stay as well
