Over Sabah Hotel

"Adequate, the property could have been better appointed and maintained"

The hotel has an old old world charm but is poorly maintained and lit. Toilet in the room has stains beyond repair and rectification and needs replacement. In general, the property looks like it needs a renovation.

"Luxurious retreat"

   19-02-2017
After intensive diving on Mabul and 3-day stay in the jungle we were a little tired and before another diving week we decided to recharge our batteries in some nice place so we booked 3 days in Sabah Hotel in Sandakan and the decision couldn't have been better. It is located in a partly historical building on a hill surrounded by the jungle c.a. 1km away from the city centre. We didn't miss the hustle and bustle of the city as we were seeking the retreat. Secondly, Sandakan is not a very welcoming place - it's just a bigger version of Semporna (those who have been to Semporna know what I mean :). Besides, you can take a taxi and for 10 RM reach the city in several minutes. The room was really huge and well-equipped with everything you need to relax: comfortable, enormous ded, really big desk, some sitting space, coffee making facilities, fridge, spacious bathroom with a bathtub and shower. Our room had a wonderful view of the swimming-pool and surrounding jungle and was very quiet even though the hotel was almost fully booked (Chinese New Year). The swimming-pool area is fantastic to relax. You can soak in the water, sunbath on the sunchairs or just sit in the shadow reading, listening to cascading water or admiring the greenery arround. Breakfasts are self-served and mainly please Chinese taste. However, you can also find cereals or other elements of continental breakfast such as scrambled eggs, fried bacon or sausages. For dinner we chose hotel's Chinese restaurant once only because the food was not worth its price and on the other days we dined in the local restaurants in Sandakan (on the promenade by the sea). The staff were very friendly, helpful and willing to help with organizing sight-seeing. To sum up, we were unhappy that we couldn't stay longer and it's definitely good value for the money.

"lunch served here"

on our way back to sandakan airport stopped by here for lunch. very nice menu service was good. we ate outside as alcohol unavailable inside, but this suited us as wanted to make the most of the heat and sunshine

"Old world charm"

   13-02-2017
We landed late afternoon from KL to sandakan and drove straight to Sabah hotel. It was the Governer' office converted to wonderful hotel with old world charm. Big lobby tastefully done overlooking pool and lots of greenery. Big and spacious rooms. Enjoyed our stay. Well for vegetarians food in Sabah region is bit of challenged. But we managed. Our large group of 12 couple had great time.

"Short stat"

   30-01-2017
This is a well maintained albeit a bit worn down hotel. Good as a base from which to travel to the Sepilok Orangutan sanctuary and the English tea house. The pool is clean and looks like a family club pool. The food is average both in terms of price and quality. Staff are very friendly.
