Over Mutiara Taman Negara Resort

"Wonderful jungle trip"
We had a 3D 2N package and rented a two bed bungalow. It was great - you really felt you were in the jungle. Before we had stayed across the river but there is no ‘jungle’ atmosphere there. Mutiara has it all - lovely wooden chalets, very friendly and helpful staff and a brilliant chef. The meals were excellent; having a package we had set menus but we needn’t have worried - the food was top notch. Well done to the chef. Our only disappointment was that the friendly tapir no longer wanders into the resort, it has returned to the jungle which we could only be glad about.
"A resort inside the protected area"
If there's one thing that fascinates me most about the place is the fact that this establishment is a privately owned enterprise operating within a strict protection zone of a protected area. The public-private partnership between the hotel/resort management and the protected area/park management is something worth studying to understand the dynamics of public-private partnership in conservation. As for the resort, it strives to be as eco-friendly as possible, however the entire establishment could still do more to become a true ecotourism destination.
"Do yourself a favour and spend the extra money to stay here."
Mutiara is a bit pricey but, in this case, I believe that you get what you pay for. Quaint little chalets surrounded by verdant vegetation are occasionally visited by the occasional curious lizard. The bathrooms are nice and spacious, the living room has a mini fridge and a large flat screen TV, and the bedroom has a nice ambiance. Both rooms are equipped with fans and AC, totally necessary in this hot and humid environment. The breakfast buffet is delicious and varied and the staff are abundantly friendly. The only downsides to this hotel are that the wifi only works in the restaurant, to access the hotel you need to climb nearly 100 steps ( a bit of a climb) from the river, and the restaurant is nice but overpriced. eg. local dishes cost about 3 times more at the hotel restaurant than they do across the river. Overall though, an excellent stay.
We were prepared for basics, but not what we found below. The rooms are dated and appliance do not match the eco friendly environment. For example the fridges are over 20 years old and are using the old CFC. The icebox is over flowing with ice. The shower wet room has damp on the wall and ceiling. The room smells mouldy. There is a poor lack of hygiene. It is all good to state to everyone to take off shoes but when the general cleanness of the room is lacking then, it can’t get any dirtier. The menu has wonderful drinks, but when you are advised the manager forgot to order the vodka and gin this is an additional worrying sign. Other issues shower is cold. AC is dated and takes several hours to work. Poor lighting. No WiFi albeit there is WiFi at the dining area. We left after one night. Not impressed at all. The staff are super friendly and very nice.
"Outstanding Stay "
We stayed here some 5 years ago and just loved the place. After re-visiting - I can honestly say that this place is just getting better. Ferry across the river was so easy. Don't worry about your bags the Hotel moves these right to your chalet. Check-in was excellent, met with a warm and genuine smile, everything was explained to us regarding trips, breakfast dinner etc. Chalet was perfect. Nicely refurbished bathroom was nice toiletries. Sleeping area is still keeping the rustic feel which is really in keeping with the overall experience of sleeping in the Rainforest. Nice quality bed linen and comfortable mattress and pillows. Restaurant is exceptional with a varied selection to cater for most tastes. Do try some of the sweets - there fabulous! Nice selection of wines. Quality of the food is very good. Service is really good. Breakfast is good with a reasonable selection, however a choice of pastries would be good - but this is only my preference. Overall a great stay and one that we will definitely repeat. Many thanks to the Management and Staff for making our stay so memorable.
