"A lovely resort, needs a little refurb."
Our 3 night stay did not start well as the sea view villa we had booked was not available for our first night. We were offered an inferior villa with a credit for the price difference and a free massage or a better villa at no extra cost. They should have offered the better villa and the massage to overcome our disappointment. Our villa was stuck in the shade behind a lot of vegetation and was not sparkling clean. Then the balustrade to the wooden walkway collapsed out when we touched it and we could have fallen 3-4m into the vegetation below. BUT gradually the beauty of the site won us over, this was helped by the free drinks every night between 6-7pm at the lovely pier end bar. There are only a few front of house staff, so the barman also does the serving at restaurant and sometimes also breakfast, the nice receptionist, May, is always around to help with anything. Having a few staff is a bonus as you get to know each other quite quickly, they are very good, so it makes it feel very personal. The food in the Asian restaurant was very good, especially the vegetable dishes, and all quite fairly priced, although the wine choice was limited, but after the free bar drinks one did not need a lot more! We moved to our cliff top villa, no. 16, for two nights and it was beautiful, with a great views and ambiance. The snorkelling off the beach was ok but the coral is badly damaged. There is not a lot else to do, we got a water taxi to the nearby town and went diving on two days, which was very good, see separate report. This is a pricey resort, but worthwhile if you get villa 16, I would feel a little short changed with a treetop villa. But great if you want to have total relaxment. The free massage we had from two delightful girls with strong hands was excellent, to be recommended.
"Perfect island home "
The Japalmala Resort was delightful and we had a wonderful and very peaceful stay. We stayed in a villa right on the beach which was perfect. The staff were really nice, relaxed but always looking after us well. We were able to swim, kayak and snorkel right from the doorstep. The quality of the accommodation was very high and really comfortable. We enjoyed all our meals and thought the quality of food excellent. We'd love to return!
"Little piece of paradise"
We've been to Japamala three times over the last 10 years and it keeps getting better. This time we stayed in the Penghulu's House, the house of the chief, the 2-bedroom villa of the resort. It is great: very comfortable, large private plunge pool with a nice wooden deck around it, private bale, private access to the beach which is right in front just meters away. The only thing we regretted is that in spite of its great location at the far end of the resort, a path to Kampong Genting passes right through the villa's grounds. It is not very much used, but a few people still went by every day, so privacy was impacted and not as complete as we would have liked or expected. The resort is just beautiful, nestled in the jungle with a beautiful white sandy beach at its feet. Pictures on the website don't lie. From the jetty restaurant, you can hardly see the chalets in the jungle. Food is excellent with a fairly large menu which allows a good variety of dishes even for a week-long stay. At times though some ingredients can be short on supply, and not every dish is available at all times. Snorkeling gear is available free of charge is all sizes, so don't bother packing your own. The reef around is still beautiful, though it has suffered from recent storms and global warming. Besides the usual reef fishes, we have encountered sea turtles and even a couple of black tip reef sharks. The spa is very nice, the treatments are of good quality, and the prices reasonable. The resort staff is always very friendly and attentive. Getting to the resort is a little tricky now that there are no more flights to Tioman from Singapore. The public ferry out of Mersing is a decent and reasonably-priced option but planning can be difficult due to the ferry schedule that depends on the high tides. Be sure to check the timetables which are published on the ferry website a month in advance.
"#sweet little escape#"
Perfect for a 2 day stay and escape from busy life. The resort has a limited number of guests to take so that you have your privaticy. The resort crew is very very friendly and offer a premium service. I am impressed!
"Rustic Luxury is very apt description"
We stayed for eight nights for our honeymoon. The service was very friendly, and nothing was too much trouble. In particular Andy was exceptional at his job.The right balance of being attentive without being "in your face" all the time. The snorkeling at the house reef was good but the snorkeling out at Coral island (boat trip) was excellent and the highlight of the trip. The WiFi was very patchy and my Malaysian SIM wouldn't work at all. Furthermore, the resort stands alone, so unless you want a long jungle trek, you have to boat it out to see anywhere else. However, we wanted a remote holiday just relaxing, so this was all good for us. The food at the Thai restaurant was top shelf, especially the curries. We were ready to eat somewhere else by the time we left (8 dinners later). We only ate at the Italian when we were doing lunch. Both restaurants accommodated Elle's coeliac needs appropriately. The chalets were exceptional. Great ambiance, and some beautiful little touches such as a cognac nightcap left in the room by the turn-down team. Well done to Andy and our residential manager. You helped ensure our honeymoon was near flawless. Lars and Elle
