"Relaxing atmosphere"

The resorts very small and if you were to compare it to Jolly beach this would be a big difference. The crowd here is super quiet which is good for families and relaxation. I love the food here , regardless of their limited times of food being available their food tasted great. The only downfall about this resort would be their beach.. super short and dirty.. and not much maintenance done. The rooms are okay but their water is not the cleanliness.. our water is light brown...probably from rust and our tub keeps clogging up. The WiFi connection is great here and reception is everywhere and can be accessible. The only thing I dislike about this place is how they do not offer food for 2 hours in between breakfast and lunch which is such a hassle... and dinner is served at 7pm and not 6pm like other resorts... there's not much to do within the area where as jolly beach you would be able to explore the area where there is a super market and small shops and small hiking spots. Everything at this resort is limited and you would need to use a taxi which is very inconvenient for the guests who wish to do more.

"Laid back resort"

Resort adjacent to beach. Gate from resort directly access Dickinson Bay Beach. Large rooms, huge double beds! Good air con. Decor and bathroom very dated but functional. Food excellent! All inclusive deal is brilliant. Most staff very friendly and incredibly polite. Lovely pool. Taxi service very good; driver can stay with you all day long if you wish , taking you where-ever you wish to go - price worked out before you set off.

We spent a great week in Antigua at the Halcyon Cove by Rex Resort, This was the 2nd Rex Resort we stayed at. Our first experience was in St-Lucia. This one in Antigua needs to be renovated, its starting to show its age. There are some very visible areas that require some TLC; the landscaping, the building and the outdoor furniture to name a few. Now for all the good stuff... the STAFF is EXCELLENT. I cannot say enough about them. Dolston & Heather at the bars were simply the best. Very friendly; extremely customer service oriented. The beach is beautiful....took daily walks all the way to the other end of the bay. Nightly sunsets that took your breath away! At the only a la carte restaurant called Wairi Pier the food was delicious... YUM YUM the service from our lovely waitress, Julian was simply EXCELLENT. The menu has 3 choices included with your all inclusive package & items that you can purchase including lobster & steak. The food that is included is very good....the tilapia is perfectly cooked; the chicken is fall off the bone & the pasta is good as well. The Carib Grill by the pool & beach served lunch everyday...buffet style with a great variety from fish to burgers pizza & fries & fresh salads..... YUM YUM The buffet for breakfast was also very good.....a great station to order your eggs any style & great many choices to please everyone. Dinner was great there as well. Nightly entertainment could use some improvement; mostly DJ style & karaoke with a few nights of live bands. The atmosphere made up for the lack of entertainment. We were there from April 8th to the 15th 2017.

"Beautiful Island, beautiful people"

We travelled between April 5th-19th in a party of 4 adults (44-75 yrs). It was a celebratory trip for my Sister-in-law's 50th birthday. After a fantastic flight with BA, we were very quickly taken in an air conditioned taxi to the Halcyon (no waiting on a coach for everybody to get in). We were greeted by a smiley face, a lovely fruity drink and given all the information we required for our stay and our all inclusive bracelet. It was an amazing surprise to find that our rooms had been upgraded to 2 wonderfully spacious and light family rooms next to each other, about as close as you could get to the beach! (Rooms 307/308). The rooms were fine, yes they needed updating, but it is a minor detail, and certainly not anything to ruin our holiday. They were cleaned everyday, they were light and spacious, which is all we needed. The food in the Halcyon is exceptional, all fresh, and with a good choice. We have stayed at Sandals resorts before, and although the variety is not as wide, the quality certainly was. It was always topped up if getting low, and the sausages in the mornings were the best we had tasted! The omelette chef's Orlan and Egbert, always put an early morning smile on our faces, and the omelettes are gorgeous with a good variety of fillings. We made particular friends with Magretta (supervisor) in the breakfast restaurant (also the beach lunch area) who was always there with her infectious laugh, wide smile and teas and coffees as we arrived every morning. She is such a warm and laid back person, a real asset to the Rex resorts staff. The lunch menu we found to be fine, yes there are burgers and salads, and I can see why people think that is repetitive, but there was also fish everyday, breads, pasta, pies, stews, cakes and desserts. What more could you possibly want? We met Riaan, the GM, he is the most hands on, approachable, hard working Manager we have ever met. We saw him wiping tables, clearing plates, washing up, seeing to tourists and helping in the bar area. Riaan is very well respected by his staff. The only issue we had during our stay was one of the beach vendors (I won't mention his name) but on a couple of occasions, he stood and preached the bible to us for 20 minutes at a time, we hadn't asked for it, and didn't appreciate it. Of all the vendors on the beach, he was the only one that a friendly 'no thank you' didn't work with. He is not employed by the hotel, and I'm sure some people find him entertaining, but we didn't. We went on a few excursions, a round the island land tour (Dave thank you so much) which was amazing, we saw everything we needed to and wanted to, it lasted the whole day and we couldn't have asked for a better person than Dave to go with, again, that Caribbean charm and easy going nature will have you smiling from ear to ear.(and the rum punch)! The trip to Barbuda was fantastic, ($150 each) it is on the Excellence, a motorised Catamaran, we were lucky enough to see Hump Back Whales, and although it rained whilst on the trip, the rain is so different when you are on holiday! We went to the bird sanctuary (again, a must) to see the huge Frigate birds. The crew on the Excellence were great, and helpful to our Mum who also enjoyed it immensely. The pink sand on the beach in Barbuda is seasonal, and although we missed it, the sea was crystal clear and warm, the island is practically deserted (or so it seems) and a real slice of a tropical paradise. The best trip we did was by far the Stingray City experience ($50 each). There are 3 'feeding slots' per day, and when you arrive, a guide gives you a short informative talk about what to do and what not to do. Then a small motorised boat takes you to the middle of ocean (about 15 minutes), to a shallow part (waist height) where the wild Stingrays hear the boats and come to be fed by you. The guides are so helpful and friendly, I was scared to begin with, as the rays are huge (about 2.5 feet across), but they put me at ease straight away. We fed the rays (Mum did too, even though she can't swim) We bought the photos which were really professional ($75 for a collection of 5). The experience lasts for around 1.5 hours. Taxi's are fairly expensive on the island, but it is set by the government, not the taxi firms or hotels, and so it is pretty much the same everywhere (a 30 minute return ride to town was about $28 regardless of how many people you have). The town is lovely, don't expect a huge shopping centre, lots of small boutiques and interesting nik-nak shops, you can haggle, but if you shop around, there are a wide variety of prices anyway. There were 3 cruise ships in when we went to St. Johns (or 'Town') and it was very busy, your hotel band on your wrist will stop you being hassled though, just hold it up to the guys trying to get the cruisers to go on day trips, and they will let you be. On my Sister-in-laws Birthday, Dave recommended a restaurant called 'Dennis' although they were meant to be closed on that particular day, they opened especially for us, it was a lovely touch because it is the name of my Husband and Sister-in-laws late father. The meal was amazing, so tasty and a fantastic price (around $120 for 4 meals and 2 or 3 drinks each). I must mention some more names at the hotel, in the bars, Errol (thanks for the laughs) also Ken and Heleen, Dalston (thank you for being so kind), Austin (also from the Warri Pier) Fenton (you are hilarious) Dave (we love you) the kids club lady (I'm so sorry I can't remember your name) who involved us in all the daytime activities, Jessie (what a smile), Devon (Food and Beverages Manager, who is the smartest dressed person I have ever seen) I think there are so many other names (I apologise), and I will say a huge thank you to all of you. Every single one of you made it special for us. Just an observation, we noticed a few people not saying please or thank you when speaking to the staff, which we thought rather rude. If you are friendly and offer a smile, you will reap the rewards. The staff work really hard, and that is what makes this hotel the place it is. Rex do need to spend some money here, just a lick of paint and a little updating, but it already is a winner, the location is first class, the Warri Pier is a real treat to eat at, the hotel is well laid out, the gardens are lovely. Quick Tips: The mosquitos are about, but 50% deet spray is adequate, apply morning and evening Don't turn your back on your food at the carib restaurant, the laughing gulls will eat it before you do! Watch the sunset at 6-30pm each evening, there is a green flash if you are lucky enough to see it as it disappears. Have a lovely time, and don't sweat the small stuff, smile and please someone get up and do the Karaoke on a Tuesday, or Fenton will be singing all night!!!! (joking) Above all else, enjoy this little gem of a hotel, on a fantastic (if a little expensive) island.

"Enjoy the Experience"

Well, where do we start? From the moment we arrived we were met by smiling and welcoming staff. Jerkyl from reception and Mr Thiart, the General Manager, helped us to our room with our luggage. On the way we could see that work had been carried out to the buildings and grounds. We later saw many alterations and improvements to the hotel. This is all due to Mr Thiart and his efforts to improve the standard of the hotel and the service the staff provide. The management and staff are absolutely fabulous, nothing is too much trouble for them and they will go out of their way to satisfy your needs and always with a smile. Perhaps a few more smiles, pleases and thanks from guests would not go amiss. It always seems to us that people respond in kind to one’s approach. Dining: Margretta , Ann-Marie, Julien, Roxanne and all the other servers in the dining room do a marvellous job and provide an excellent service. The food is plentiful and there is a wide choice of dishes. If you need anything special the chefs (Brian,Orlan, Auris, Egbert and David) will cater to your needs…all you have to do is ask. Meals are served in three areas: Breakfast and some evening meals are served in the Arawak Restaurant. Lunch is served at the Carib beach bar where one can get the usual fayre of burgers and chips/French fries but also a good selection of various hot dishes such as freshly cooked fish, chicken, pasta, rice, pizza. Fresh selections of salads are also available. The Warri Pier is a lovely location and you can have afternoon tea as well as dinner there. Book for dinner at this restaurant as soon as you arrive as it is very popular. One can eat there three times a week in the evening and choose from an a la carte menu. The selection is not extensive but what is offered is of a good standard. The setting is wonderful and quite romantic. The service is excellent too. There are two bars: the Carb bar by the beach which is open almost every night. The Lobby bar is open on Sundays and some evenings during the week, but who wants to sit inside when you can sit under the stars and listen to the waves and be entertained. Heleen, Heather, Errol, Austin, Dolston and Ken run the busy Carib bar and do a great job mixing drinks and serving guests who sometimes forget to say” please” or “thank you”. There is entertainment most nights, some live music with a good band and some with a Jessie the DJ. There are local dancers too and a steel band plays on a Saturday night at the weekly BBQ…. this is one evening not to miss. Dave and Fenton really do a fantastic job as the entertainment staff. They are always on the go doing their best to offer guests various fun activities as well as morning aerobics. Sorry Dave that we always arrived when you had just finished your pool aerobics class!!! Our room was serviced daily to a high standard with fresh towels as and when requested. The AC was very effective and there was a fridge, safe and a TV in our room. We had no issues with a hot water supply or its colour at any time during our three week stay. On this visit mozzies were not a problem for us but if they are, on your way to dinner just ask reception to have your room sprayed and it will be done. There was a lot of seaweed and grass washed up on the beach during our stay but the hotel had men and a JCB at hand to clean it up. The grass and seaweed is a natural annual occurrence and not the fault of the hotel management. If you have an issue during your holiday, ask for Mrs Scholar-Lewis or Mr Thiart the General Manager who will address your problem or issue to your complete satisfaction. Please do not go home then raise it in this forum when it could have been addressed at the time. There is a Tour desk in the lobby where you can get information about various trips and experiences. All in all we had a wonderful time and would certainly recommend this hotel. It is a three star hotel but at a three star price. The Sandals hotel along the shared beach costs twice as much but we do not believe the extra cost could be justified. We hope you enjoy your holiday as much as we did. The Sussex Strollers.
