"We loved it! great value for money, relaxed and friendly hotel!"

Having spent many nights worrying after reading negative, disparaging reviews we weren't expecting a lot from the Halcyon Cove, however, we had a wonderful, relaxed family holiday and wouldn't hesitate to go back. If anything I can't fathom why people have been so harsh on the place. To reiterate it isn't a glitzy, clinical sandals style resort but it is for these exact reasons we loved it, its relaxed, authentic and friendly place with lots of Caribbean charm. The food was great, always something tasty to eat and relief not to be met with dozens of random bland options like other hotels often provide. Staff were friendly and helpful, during out whole week not one staff member did not exchange a hello or how are you in passing. We had a pool view room which was perfectly adequate, yes bathroom a bit rough round the edges but nothing major, air con worked fine, comfy beds, good cleaning lady who was always polite and chatty. Our two boys absolutely loved the place, in particular the afternoon cricket matches on the beach with Dave and the staff and the visiting cricket teams, great happy, family memories. Having paid a lot more in previous years half term holidays the Rex was great value and I felt like it was worth every penny. Well done Halcyon Cove, we thought you were great and give you a big thumbs up :)

"3* Is Very Kind"

Check in and luggage transfer all very smooth, however once in the room the previous reviews came to life. No safe fitted, description stated that all rooms had safes. décor is very tired and done by bob the builders blind assistant. TV had no remote so unusable, hairdryer had no tube or nozzle so unusable. Electrical conduit not attached to wall and only one double socket in the room. Taps in bathroom had pitted and peeling chrome plating and the water ran brown for the first 30 seconds. Tea and coffee making facilities would be nice as room was long way from restaurant. The only plus was the new, remote controlled air conditioning unit which was very efficient. A safe was fitted but none of the other items were rectified. Rooms were clean but the phrase silk purse and sow's ear come to mind, there is a ruder phrase that also fits, "You can't polish a **** ". The choice of food in the restaurant was poor. Lots of queuing at breakfast as the food was slow to be replenished and they ran out of bacon and beans one day. Pool was late being cleaned every day so unusable until about 10:30, although advertised open at 09:00. Sun loungers were old and very rickety, slatted loungers had no cushions so very uncomfortable. Fixed sun shades and very few of them, no movable sun umbrellas available. Warri pier restaurant was OK but expensive supplements if you wanted steak or Lobster!! When leaving, we had to be out of our room at 12:00, but as not being picked up until 15:00, we needed to shower but were only offered a shower in the children's play area, 200m from reception and very cold water. Some guests were point blank refused somewhere to shower before a 9 hour plane flight. Taxi organised by the hotel to go to airport was 20 minutes late picking us up! Antigua itself was lovely and we enjoyed the organised day out on the catamaran and the island safari, but would pay a bit extra for better accommodation if we were to go again.

"Nice hotel"

Nice hotel but as most people on this review said it is in need of renovations.....this hotel has the potential to be a 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 hotel.........love the restaurant though, the food is very tasty and their deserts are 😍

"All was good until the last day…"

We were put into room 206, which was a very nice room. It was steps from the beach, steps from the beach bar as well as the lunch restaurant. The room was huge and not as bad as expected based on reviews we had read. There was always hot water, and the air conditioning worked. We had a few visitors…on day 1 and 8 we had cockroach-type bugs. In between, we had a little lizard that got in due to the huge gap under the front door, and a few centipede-like bugs. The food is tasty, although not enough selection. If you are used to mile long buffets, do not expect that here. Each meal has about 12 dishes to choose from, and that includes your meats, veggies, carbs, etc. But everything tasted good, so I can’t really complain. Oh and the coffee was probably the best coffee I’ve had in the Caribbean. The breakfast waitresses all worked one speed…slow. The evening waiters were great. We went to the Warri Pier for dinner two nights. The chicken was overcooked the first night, the pasta was good the second night. The beach is gorgeous. We were always able to find a beach chair…but if you need shade, you’ll need to get your towel out there early. Speaking of towels, I recommend bringing your own. They always seemed to have beach towels available at the towel hut, but if you lose your towel it’s $100US! Absolutely ridiculous. Same goes for the key…if you lose the key, it’s $50US. The pool was cloudy most days, and it's quite tiny. We left the pool to the people playing volleyball and doing water aerobics. The wifi worked great almost the whole time we were there. It was in and out once in a while, but for the most part, you can get it everywhere. We met “Michael” on our first day on the beach. He’s quite knowledgeable about the island, but crass and rude at the same time. For some reason he thought we wanted to hear about his booty call from the night before…in the next breath he tells us his wife is coming to visit from England. We also met “Evelyn” on day one. Very nice lady, talked to us every day, trying to sell her bracelets/necklaces. We took the catamaran ride around the island through Wadali Cats. Great crew, great food, great tour. Our entire week was great, until our last day. On day 8, our flight from Toronto was delayed by 7 hours. The hotel came around at 3:00pm and said “all inclusive is over” and cut our bracelets off. They then had the gall to tell us that it was for our safety that we leave the hotel and go to the airport, even though our flight still had not left Toronto. For all anyone knew, we were going to be left at the airport all night (thankfully we were “only” stuck there for 7 hours) The airport they only offer 15 minutes of free wifi. They have 2 restaurants, and a couple of small shops/duty frees.
