"Hotel with potential but needs improvement and don't use their taxis!"
My mum and I stayed at the Ravanela in Sept for 10 days. For most parts we were looked after well by the staff however there were quite a few things that fell below expectations. Firstly, do NOT use the hotel taxis. They overcharge guests and they think they rule the roost at the hotel. We were charged 1600 for a return trip to Port Louis which is an absolute rip off and the driver made us wait half an hour to pick us up! Luckily we found a local driver who took us to an prebooked excursion that took us for 1000 for the second day we wanted to go back to Port Louis. In addition the hotel taxis man stopped us from departing for a excursion booked through the Summertimes tour rep BASED IN THE HOTEL because he didn't like the paperwork! He doesn't even work for the hotel! We spoke to the Duty Manager Ben about this who seem to be backing the taxi man and saying it was Summertimes fault and was a government thing! Why does the hotel taxi man need to get involved at all though? and why doesn't the Maritim have the same issue? There are no taxi people allowed in the lobby or reception area to rip off clients there why is it ok at the Ravanela? The hotel finishing touches are not really there. The standard of paint job and finish work is shoddy and really needs fixing. There are also a number of other things that are really fustrating but after complaining a couple of times you get fed up of it! These include - no bathrobes - no iron in the room and you can only borrow it for an hour from reception - the buffet food was hardly ever hot- mostly luke warm - not enough waitstaff on pool side and only 1 of them actually did any work while the other seemed to be more interested in entertaining/ chatting to non asian guests! - The cleaning really wasn't up to standard and we found a lizard and cockroach in our room - There are also no draws that shut to store your clothes in It is a shame that this could be a really good hotel. All the staff (with the exception of Ben) were really friendly but its a shame they are let down by poor management and finishing. Totally recommend Mauritius to anyone but I would suggest maybe look at the Maritim or Intercontinental!
Such a good trip! Loved the resort it was beautiful & very clean. You do have to book your restaurants in advance and I must admit even though it worked okay for us it was not a good system. You can only book on the Sunday for the week ahead! And its a very flimsy paper system! They should really be scanning room cards to stop fraud of people putting stuff on your bills. The food was okay - I guess we were not expecting much as Mauritius does not have the reputation after all like America & the Caribbean etc. Beach towels were a problem - you did have to get to the towel hut early otherwise there would be none left! They did explain to us how there was a towel circulation problem once talking to the staff. The staff were superb - especially Akshay who worked on the beach round the bars most day - his service was absolutely phenomenal - really deserves some kind of recognition. We requested a room next to reception which was great as it was near everywhere. The pools were the best I have been although they were extremely cold!! The sub charges weren't difficult to work out at all it was always clearly stated. Overall a fantastic value for money trip.
An excellent hotel where the management and staff ensured our experience was one to highly recommend to others. We travelled with our grand daughter and found the accommodation to be ideal. The rooms were spacious, clean and well appointed. We didn't take advantage of all the restaurants but those we did use provide excellent quality, quantity and variety. Only minor downside was wifi only worked efficiently in the middle of the night when most guest were sleeping.
"Last Minute Exotic Holiday"
When we went to book our holiday we checked out previous Trip Advisor reviews and couldn't understand why this hotel only got 4 Stars. It didn't deter us, but we can now see why it only gets 4 stars. Please see my review below. Its a long one so settle back and read. This hotel is absolutely fabulous, beautiful location, beach, very very clean, friendly staff and fabulous food. BUT the one thing that lets it down is the consistency of service. That's why it only gets 4 stars, in our opinion its 5 stars in every other respect. Our review: we booked our holiday through Thomas Cook Signature, we flew direct from Gatwick to Mauritius with British Airways. We had private transfers in Mauritius via a company called Connections. They were very efficient and friendly. On arrival at the hotel they were very welcoming, but they wanted us to give them the hotel 'voucher'. We did appear to have one of these from Thomas Cook (check when you book) but it wasn't a problem, they found our booking on the system. Bar service - the beach is lovely but the bar service is poor. They don't seem used to people actually going up to the bar to order drinks, they ignore you. It is easier for you to actually order drinks from the waiter who comes round the sun loungers. The cafe lattes are nice, served in a glass with a straw! The All Inclusive system - confusing at first. Read the folder in your room to identify the 10 restaurants on site. It took us a few days to understand where to eat and drink without paying extra. Before we went we had read reviews from guests who said they had to sign for everything, it seems random, certainly you do have to give your room number and sign for drinks and meals, usually its 0.00 unless you have ordered a particular drink OR meal that is not included. They usually tell you before you commit. Having subsequently discussed this with the F&B Manager, he explained that new members of staff don't always know what is included for guests so they have to get guests to sign. We suggested the wrist band system they use in the Caribbean but he said guests didn't like it? Beach towels - you get a ticket for these when you arrive. Exchange ticket at kiosk on beach and get a towel. You can swap your towel for a clean/dry one whenever you like, but at the end of the holiday you have to hand back your towel and get back a ticket so you can check out. There was no shortage of towels when we went. We did take our own beach towels as well though. Water - there was no problem with the water in the hotel either when we went. Restaurants - Mozaik is the buffet restaurant where you eat breakfast and dinner. Best thing to do is wait to be seated by a waiter and then order your drinks before going to get your food. Otherwise its difficult to get service. The food is really excellent, lots of options and a childrens selection. Note that it is particularly busy on Sunday mornings and because they aren't quite up to speed it can be difficult to get a free table. Eventually we got a table but never got a hot drink, the waiter brought hot water but no tea or coffee, no mugs, nor milk! We finished our food and went to the beach and ordered coffee there. The other restaurants you have to book for an evening meal. You book in the mini-bar shop near reception. Some guests told us they were told to book on a Sunday morning, but we weren't told this so we just went along at anytime and booked.. The Riviera - we booked this one night. this is not included in the AI option. we got the impression it was really busy and they squeezed us in at 8.30pm. So we walked along, its quite an isolated spot, meant to be romantic but on arrival there was only one other couple there, no music and rather soulless so we gave it a miss and went back to Moziac. We ate in all the other restaurants, food was very good, it was strange though to order dessert at the beginning of the meal. We are not used to that. We ate in Kot Nou twice, second time we seemed to get forgotten - again service inconsistent despite staff being the same. Parents - note that all the ladies toilets had lovely clean baby changing tables. Connections - they are the in-resort reps for Thomas Cook, they were very good and we booked 3 full day excursions through them, but expensive though, If we had been able to get on the internet at the hotel we would have tried looking for alternatives. Wifi - is available for things like Facebook, but if you want to look at the internet its impossibly slow. Grand Baie - worth a visit, good shopping. We had a lovely fish lunch at Cafe de la Plage. The taxi from the hotel is a special rate! still cost £35! its only about 12km so a considered journey. I would say its worth going for an afternoon at least. We changed money there as well Hotel TV - lots of channels including films, however very few in English, considering English is their first language that was disappointing, Please see my other reviews of the trips.
"Fantastic Day at Ravelana Attitude"
Had yet a fantastic day. Great welcome at reception, and staff throughout our day were very accommodating, from the executive lounge, housekeeping, pool and beach. Hotel is well maintained and the location is perfect. Great access to the beach and to a range of excellent restaurants on the Walk. The kids have enjoyed the swimming pool, free boat services, free activities on the beach. The staff are very friendly and helpfully. Special thanks to Richie, the F&B manager, Kreshan & his team, Vikash for entertaining the kids and Amjad the personal trainer at the sport Village. Look forward to returning there soon.
