"Overrated"

   25-02-2017
After 3 weeks in Bel Ombre villas we wanted to treat ourselves to 4 days in a 5 star nearby, before flying back to Paris. From a mediocre reception, we were presented to our room, with furnishings and style dating back to a Marriotts like room 20 years ago.... This is a Club Med style place for large crowds, big pool with people specializing in reserving their beach chairs early in the morning , ignoring management letter, and showing up hours later; as well as not understanding the dress code. This is hotel that has all the pretentiousness but not the content. In short this is an overrated property and there is nothing outstanding in the three storied buildings, housing mediocre rooms. Huge restaurants with huge crowds. Only exception was the Italian restaurant where the manager William went out of his way to make dining unforgettable. Thank you for that pleasant moment. For sure the site is beautiful but...there are others on Mauritius. And then the golf: from tee box to green overgrown by kikuyu grass poorly maintained; a real shame for such a beautiful site with the potential for so much more... From the porters to the reception to the beach service, from the buildings to the room decoration the place looks and behaves like a tired place and compared to our 3 weeks of excellence in Bel Ombre ( next door) it does not deserve even close to 5 stars....that it's prices suggest!

"Truly Paradise"

   05-02-2017
As repeat guests and frequent travelers, we fell in love with Paradis all over again. Excellent service and quality and cleanliness all over. Breakfast and dinner in the Brabant restaurant is a culinary experience with a wide variety of choices and we especially appreciated the big variety of healthy and whole food. We are keen snorkel divers and enjoyed the short, pleasant boat ride to the snorkeling site and the luke warm water. The boat house staff was especially friendly and helpful. This resort is truly Paradise!

"A 1 STAR service for a so called Paradise."

   31-01-2017
It was a rather disappointing experience for a so called 5* Hotel. I was a local guest and stayed there for 2 nights/3days. Staff seemed to have been stuck in a time warp back in the 80’s where locals were hardly visiting them and tourists from abroad would get a better treatment than locals. We did not have a proper introduction of the hotel, other than being given a cold hand towel to freshen up (without a complimentary cocktail that even a 3* Hotel would give) and our keys with a brief welcome. A room attendant would then take our luggage to our room. The following day we received a phone call to tell us that check out was at 12. The last day they called us again fifteen minutes before to remind us that check out was at noon. They were very willing to take our full payment few months in advance but very eager to see us check out. We tried to ask for late departure, despite booking 10 rooms, but they requested that we name each room number one by one in order to decide if 2 rooms could be made available. (Although, they have the group booking in their records, they just wanted to make it difficult by asking us to name each and every room we booked, one by one). They have an experienced guy with a large moustache at the consierge who was making it difficult to give us late departure and some younger inexperienced ladies at the reception to do the paperwork. I have been at Trou aux Biches Hotel (Another hotel within the Beachcomber group) regularly from the 80’s and seen that place transforms to where it is now, and visited many other beachcomber hotels within the group. What I experienced at Le Paradis has nothing to do with TAB, Le Mauricia, Dinarobin , Shandrani or Le Victoria. At breakfast, one of us had quite a few pastries on a plate, and the restaurant manager in his late fourties/early fifties came to make a remark, telling us that normally we are not supposed to take food away for lunch (seeing that we had a plate full of pastries). I had been to many hotels in Mauritius and abroad, and it is the first time a staff had ever made a remark about the amount of food on our plate. Perhaps they should start putting in writing that buffet is limited to X amount of food. The rooms number 200-300 are not yet renovated and the furniture is very dated. The door is not sound proof and at anytime of the day or night you can hear any outside noise eg. Vacuum cleaner, people talking or walking on the stairways. On check out day, I expressed my dissatisfaction to the young ladies at the reception and told them that I wanted to make a complaint. They only smiled and did not know what to do. They processed my bill the usual way and did not even know that, they either need to call the manager or give me a complaint form to complete or at least apologise. I asked them again for a complaint form, which they handed to me with a plain paper and a pen. I then had to ask for the name of the hotel manager. I would strongly advise any locals (Mauritian) not to go there. Some staff may try to ignore you or pay less attention to you if you are a local. Unless you do happen to be a golfer then you may get a different treatment. Again this has no reflection on Beachcomber group but mainly on the attitude of some of the staff. The irony is, we are indirectly paying their salary and during off peak seasons, it’s the local who contribute to fill up and increase the occupancy rate. Like us or not.

"WORST EXPERIENCE AT A BEACHCOMBER HOTEL"

   30-01-2017
We went to spend 3 days (2 nights) at the hotel for Chinese New Year. During Check in we were told that we need to check out by noon on our departure day. Fair enough, the lady probably thought tthat it was my first time staying in a hotel. On the second day, someone called our room to remind us that we need to leave our room by noon tomorrow. Now it was starting to get annoying at he also wanted to know what time we will be leaving. I told him that we still got one day to go and we do not know yet what time we will be leaving but it will be by noon. On our last day, someone called our room again at 11.45am to ask whether we are ready to leave and if he could send someone to help us with our luggage. It seems that right from day one they were more interested in kicking you out of the hotel. The number of times they called us to remind us of the time we should leave our room is conducive to Harassment. Our stay at "Paradis" was "Hell" of an experience. This was our first and last stay there. TO BE AVOIDED AT ALL COST.

"Still nice, but..."

   30-01-2017
This was our first fourth trip to Paradis Beachcomber. It is still very nice. The hotel has renovated part of its restaurant and bar section. The food is still very good. The garden are still beautiful. The mini-club is great. But compared to our last trip, there were a few disappointments: - First, the sea is now made less appealing by dark green alga (the oily kind) which are unavoidable at the surface level. Difficult to convince children to go into the sea when there are surface alga almost everywhere near the beach. There are less alga when you swim further from shore, but there are still some. This is probably due to global warming, but not so nice. - Second, the rooms is the 200s and 300s section now really should be renovated. They are still large and confortable, but they have aged quite a bit. For example, the panel for the A/C was so faded, it was unreadable. The hotel has renovated the rooms to the right of the swimming pool, and is due to renovate the ones to the right later. But this should be taken into consideration when choosing a room. - Third the service is not as a nice as it used to be. Some waiters are still very friendly and smiling, but others are not. Also: you are being asked for your room number constantly, even though you must sign and write your room number for all items and even though breakfast is included. A final point, also minor: when half board, it would be nice to have a budget when you visit the other restaurants, instead of being forced to choose a set menu. It seems somewhat unfair to pay extra when ordering a simple salad, instead of the set menu. All in all, it's still a nice place, but some improvements would making it even better.
