"L'Union Beach Villas - BEST ON ISLAND!!"
This is a review of the L'Union Beach Villas. First, realize that La Digue does not have 5* accommodations. The island is pretty basic as are dining options/otherwise. If you are coming here expecting the Four Seasons, you have come to the wrong island. That said, the island is absolutely amazing from the people to the beaches to the overall bike path vibe. Our family of four stayed at the L'Union Beach Villas. These are 2 bedroom self-catering units with a decent kitchen, living area and outdoor space located inside the L'Union Estate. I researched and subsequently visited most/all of the other self catering options on the island. After our stay/research, this is the best possible self-catering (and I think even hotel option) on the island. The location is isolated and unique within the Estate. You are the closest accommodation possible to Source d'Argent...100 meters from the Estate/turtles/art shop...and right on the Union beach (which no one seems to visit so is therefore very private). The Villa was clean (and continued to be clean). The kitchen had all of the basic essentials (including a clothes washing machine) and the outdoor veranda was quite nice. Unlike other self-catering options, the 4 villas are spread out with an outlook facing the ocean. Therefore, they seemed quite private and we were never clear if we had anyone staying next door or not. Again, it isn't the Four Seasons, but it perfectly suits the island. A bike is absolutely a requirement should you stay at the villas (you need it for the island anyway) to make it back/forth to breakfast (included in stay at the resort). Breakfast was a decent spread with all of the essentials. Dinner was not all that great and they ran out of food. Putting in context what Digue is, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the L'Union Villas as the best possible self catering spot on the island...no doubt. A service gripe - I planned our family trip around staying at the L'Union Beach Villas. It took me 2 weeks on the phone or email to arrange my reservation 8 months prior to arrival. This should have been my first hint on the lack of service here. I reconfirmed my arrival with the manager 2 days in advance. On arrival, we were informed that our villa was oversold and that we would be put up in the main resort. After an hour conversation, we were lied to by the head reservationist before finally speaking with the overall manager. We worked things out, but we lost a night in the villas that we had planned this entire trip around. It was a shame to start things out on this note. In speaking with other guests, this seems to be a common occurrence. Please check, double and triple confirm your plans to ensure you don't get the same run around.
"Manager and some staff not welcoming - a boot camp? Poor food quality but beautiful garden by the sea"
Not a good welcome at reception. No free water bottle offered in chalet throughout our stay and forbidden to move anything from the fridge! Basic chalet, quite small, part of shower room outdoors so by heavy rain water on floor and stick insects Smallest ever safe. No Wifi in chalet - only in the lobby without fans and complicated Wifi log in each time you returned to the lobby. Sometimes no internet at all. Lack of lighting in chalet. Beach chalet our option with beautiful view twds sea and sunset and nice sun loungers on the terrace. Beach very narrow by the hotel and shallow water - good for spotting fish but not for swimming. Restaurant: waiters/waitresses very pleasant and friendly. Mixed buffet breakfast quality and lukewarm water for preparing tea. Dinner buffets were themed but food quality very poor. Cooks did not seem to know what they were cooking! The labels on the dishes were misplaced and many missing so not always sure what you were eating. Tried the lunch restaurant (a la carte). Had overcooked fish. Very disappointing. Besides next to the A la carte restaurant there were builing works going on, and no mention of these when booking our holiday!
"POOR quality comfort, RUDE staff, sometimes no ELECTRICITY"
well , one thing we learnt, we will not go there anymore. the rooms are basic, meaning in terms of comfort, but not very clean neither, mattress are so old and stained... we stayed 1hour without electricity at 6pm, no torchlight, no candle in the rooms, you are just in the dark total, no A/C of course... Food and beverage is average, at 7,30pm 3 dishes are already finished with no refill while the restaurant is open until 9pm, ants all over the desert... the service is very poor with an extremely rude and arrogant attitude from the staff.
"Felt like part of the community -- really relaxed"
We came back after 17 years away. Progress has changed things for the better and worse. The lodge is great. We stayed as a family in 2 A frames. The rooms were well equipped, cleaned every day and well air conditioned. La Digue itself is now much more busy with big Coco-Cat ferries arriving a few times a day and motorised vehicles now common place. Having said that you can walk or cycle easily and safely into the centre. Bike hire available from just outside the hotel entrance and you can then leave your bikes by your room when you are not using them. The food was good, very good for buffet style. Prices at the bar are reasonable and the pool bar staff are great. If you want quick cheaper drinks to quench your thirst then there is a small grocery store less than 100m from the hotel entrance. We went for the diving and that was fantastic. I will review separately. My reason for not giving 5 stars is that aside from the diving the hotel doesn't really offer any other sports/recreational activities.
In terms of accommodation it’s an average 3 stars hotel, rooms are clean, spacious and comfortable. Friendly staff, problem solving. Should improve the quality of food confection and variety of food. The location is perfect, as near to the beach as possible, takes 10 seconds to get there. The beach is wonderful whit white sands, warm, calm waters and sealife at the reach of your hand. Perfect if you want to relax
