"Honest review "

We were really looking forward to staying in this hotel, and I really wanted to be able to give it 5 on trip advisor, but had to be honest and highlight the things that knocked it down for us. Let me break it down! The staff - for us the staff is a huge factor in a hotel, let me say that the staff at this hotel are fantastic. So sophisticated, gracious and friendly! From the moment our cab door opened at the front of the hotel we felt completely welcome! Particularly nice staff are the lobby bar staff, fabulous service and smartly dressed! But, generally all round they are very nice, warm and helpful! Overall pretty perfect! (5*) The room- ok so this is one of the areas where the hotel lost a few marks for us. We stayed in the Kinabalu wing in a sea view king, although the room was nice, it is dated. Carpet in a ocean view room for me is just a no, and very business like, and it was pretty shabby too. The bathroom was nice, separate double shower which was lovely and powerful! 2 basins with amenities, hairdryer, iron etc. Bed was really comfortable and big, fridge, safe and a nice balcony. Be warned the minibar does not come stocked, the nearest seven eleven is 30mims walk away, there is a shop on site but it is of course expensive! The room had Everything you need, it just didn’t feel 5 star to me, I have stayed in much nicer rooms for a similar price. Don’t let it put you off though coz this hotel has some real pluses to it! (3*) The pool - ok this is the confusing one. So let’s start by saying the setting for this hotel really is just lovely, set on a peninsula over looking islands and north facing, so you really get a beautiful sunset (if it’s not raining). The pool area is beautiful to look at too, plenty of trees, water features and garden areas! The actual pool is also really nice, it’s big! Has a range of depths and also has life guards on duty. There is a bridge through the centre of the pool, so the right side tends to remain more adult and the kids stuff, slides, games is the other side. The gardens surrounding are gorgeous, ponds with koi and plenty of floral displays. It generally has a really nice feel to it. Ok so, the negatives. When we go to a 5 star hotel we expect to have a sunbed, not always the case apparently. There is absolutely nowhere near enough beds for all guests in the hotel and they are crammed together in a single methodical line! didn’t really like that. Also the umbrellas are fixed, so if you do manage to get a bed and it’s in the sun, you have absolutely no option for shade, and in Borneo you burn, trust me! The pool also lacks a bar! Shocking! Oh and if you get a bed and think I’ll go for lunch, or a nice long swim, be warned your towels will have vanished!!!!Generally though it is clean, pretty and a good size, just needs a bit of tweaking! Take note management! (4*) The beach - ok so, the “beach” isn’t really a beach I’ve got to be honest. There is a man made area which they have made to look like a little cove (which is pretty) around 100m long if that!!! The sand is that fake sort of sand pit stuff, which really annoyed me! There are large sofas and table surrounding the edge of the beach which is nice if you want to chill and watch the sunset! There are sun beds on the beach but that is pretty much it, it’s really not all that. We were actually pretty shocked when we arrived as from the images online it appears that the entire grounds of the hotel are leading onto long beaches for nice walks, they aren’t. There is one beach and it isn’t great! (3*) The restaurants - ok let me get the worst bit out there! The morning buffet is horrendous, everything about it! Too small for the amount of people, it is just so busy you end up wanting to trip people just to get them out your way, the selection of food is great, if your Asian!! Bread and eggs sufficed for 5 mornings! Oh and the coffee, not good! The staff again are nice, but it really just isn’t all that! Oh the bread was good though I remember! So the buffet again but this time, evening. Right the 5 star parts are: the quality of the food is really really good! The selection of food was also good, lots of shellfish, Asian dishes, salads, vegetables and my partner said best deserts he ever had in a buffet! It’s nowhere near as busy and the staff again perfect. The negatives, it is expensive! Depending on exchange rate it’s about £35/£40 per person and that does not include any drinks, which is a little steep for me whether 5 star or not! Generally good though. We ate in the Italian, not really that much on the menu, pizza was good but expensive! But hey it’s Italian, what can go wrong. Cocos grill we really liked, nice little menu, fresh food and more reasonable. The setting is really nice for this restaurant as well. Generally the restaurants were really good, expensive but good! (4*) The bars - ok only one negative thing to say, and that is simply I can’t believe there isn’t a pool bar for a 5*!!! Everything else is positive. The lobby bar is just beautiful, vaulted wood ceilings in typical Borneo style, quality of the cocktails is absolutely excellent, staff amazing, they also have a happy hour in the evening where beer, vodka, whisky etc is 2 for 1! Perfect! Loved this bar! The sunset bar is also fantastic, beautiful chilled area in the sea, again quality of drinks was good, and they have 2 happy hours throughout the day! They also do a barbecue in the evening, yum! Even better! Again staff lovely! Bars overall good! (4/5*) The hotel also offers a full spa range in a beautiful location, golf and plenty of kids activities if your on a family holiday! Overall I would say this hotel is 5* but there are some attributes to it that do need some work! I would say that is more a family hotel than couples! Also a little hint, do you research on when Chinese New Year falls! Our last 2 days clashed with new year and it was absolute Bedlam! Hope it helps!!!

"Lovely hotel in an excellent location"

Beautiful setting and fabulous amenities, staff were superb, extremely friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Great sized room with great views over the ocean, only down side rooms could do with a revamp

"Great resort with beautiful sunset view"

I have stayed here mid February this year. I was worried that it is rainy season around this time but fortunately I had only few showers during my stay. Personally the best thing about this resort is the sunset bar. It was the best sunset I've ever seen. They also have great pool, lounge, mini golf and their own marina that you can easily go to close by islands where you can enjoy snorkel or parasailing. Also there are so many other things you can do in the resort that I had spent most of my time inside. And the location is great! Very close to the city and the airport as well. Apart from breakfast being so crowded and noisy, I can definitely say that it was one of the best resort I've been so far.

I loved this place. Beatifull view into the ocean, peacefull and quiet. Family with children are separated from couples without children in the svimmimg pool. If you just want to relax this is the place. It's boat trips departing to different islands all day from the hotel. The hotel also have spa. Concierge was really helpfull and friendly. The tour company at the hotel try all the best to find activites that you want to do. The meals was perfect. They also had gluten free meals.

"More of a family hotel"

We had two suites which were really a good size, nice lounge and two good sized bathrooms. A bed was added in one of the suites in the lounge for my son and there was still plenty of room. Wrap round balcony with loungers and chairs were a major selling point. The Kinabalu club and staff were absolutely wonderful can't speak highly enough of their professionalism, a credit to the hotel. The rooms were kept beautifully clean by the cleaning staff, they really do a good job. There are a few drawbacks however, some of the guests were just very rude and could be so noisy, shouting at each other rather than just talking, and children screaming down the corridors especially of a night. Obviously this is not the hotels fault, but it underlines that this is more of a hotel for families with children rather than a place for singles or just adults. The pool is not huge and really not enough loungers and shades for the large number of guests. The gardens are lovely and very well maintained, there are quite a few loungers here but they are very heavy to drag around whilst trying to get a bit of shade under a tree because there are no sun shades here, maybe understandably as it can be very windy. This is why I would recommend a room with a balcony, spent quite a lot of time on it for the shade and peace and quiet.
