Over Hilton Kuching

Near to everything. Delightful and accommodating staff. Nothing too much trouble for them. Helped and advise with booking tours. Great coffee shop at hotel. Many good restaurants within walking distance of hotel.
"Feeling Cosy on the Waterfront"
The Hilton in Kuching is located literally a few steps away from the Kuching waterfront. There is an exit on three ground floor next to the cafe which provides quick and easy access to the abundant and varied food stalls lining the river. Looking out through the tall windows on the Lobby floor, this scene is one of picturesque beauty. Apart from it's central location, the Hilton also provides a range of amenities one would consider complette, from the beatific surroundings of the swimming pools, the complete gym as well as the clean and welcoming Muslim prayer rooms. The food is of good quality and the variety reflecting the diverse Malaysian culture. Do not hesitate to try the excellent Sarawak laksa. All in, a very comfortable and cosy place to be in the heart of the capital of 😆Sarawak.
"A pleasant sanctuary"
Whilst not the same standard of furnishings as other similar class hotels, the Hilton Kuching is still a luxurious treat in the centre of town and reasonably good value for money. Tips: join the loyalty club and book with the Hilton website and get free wifi (though at the rates charged it should really be included) Also - fork out for the executive level- there are a lot of perks including views, canapés, breakfast and lounge access
"OK but a bit disappointing"
On the plus side the hotel is in a good location on the waterfront. The outside and the rooms have obviously recently been decorated. The staff were friendly, and checking in and out was efficient. On the less positive side, the carpets and furnishings were old, worn and stained, and in urgent need of replacement. There is a buffet restaurant where we had breakfast and on one evening had a buffet dinner. At dinner many of the dishes were virtually cold as the heating plates were set too low and this meant we didn't enjoy what otherwise would have been quite a nice meal. We did complain and were given a modest discount, but we obviously didn't go back there. There is a lot of choice at breakfast, much of it Malay and Chinese dishes, but there is an omelette/egg station and a few Western breakfast choices. Again some of the breakfast dishes were cold and this seemed to be random from day to day - clearly no-one checks the temperatures during breakfast service. One night we are at the hotel's Steakhouse restaurant which does a range of Western dishes and was very good. We tried to go back the following night but it was closed for a private function (there had been no warning the previous evening that it was going to be closed). So we went for our second meal at the James Brooke restaurant/bar across the road on the waterfront where the food was excellent both times. There weren't many people staying at the hotel who were likely to want to use the bar on the reception level, which was deserted both times we popped in for a drink. Some of the decor is 1970s disco style and there was football being shown on small TVs where the colour was faulty and the pitch was red. The bar, along with the restaurants was far too cold - the hotel could save some money and the planet by having less aggressive air con. We came to Malaysia to escape the British winter not to re-live it! Our room was at the back of the hotel - obviously those at the front have a much nicer view. The room was drab - the newly decorated walls were grey, the carpet was stained and the armchair and stool were worn and shabby. The safety button on the shower temperature control was jammed so the water was only slightly warm, but when we reported this, someone came and repaired this within 15 minutes and then it was fine with hot water whenever we wanted it. This is actually an OK hotel and a great base for trips to some amazing places - we saw orang-utans at Semenggoh and a lots of wildlife at Bako National Park. It is probably one of the best hotels in Kuching. The main issue was that the Hilton name had suggested much higher standards, which this hotel does not live up to. We wouldn't have a problem staying here again - but we would have our expectations under control next time.
"Great staff and excellent location"
I have mixed thoughts about this hotel and I struggled with how many stars to give. Firstly by far the best bit about this hotel is the hugely helpful and very friendly staff. Absolutely nothing was too much trouble. A real credit to this hotel. The rooms are also large and well equipped, yes the hotel may be old but my room was good. The service in the exec lounge is beyond compare and the food in an evening is superb with both lots of variety and change. Wine is totally free flowing for 2 and a half hours! My main issue with the hotel is I specifically enquired by email before I arrived whether they had sauna and steam room in the gym and the answer was confirmed as yes. Indeed when I got to my room I read in the room services book that the gym had indeed a sauna and steam room. This imagine my surprise when I arrived at said gym to be told that this was now all closed down and then she whipped out a brochure with chargeable services. Not impressed!!! On a number of levels this is not good enough. Firstly the email to me lied and secondly the hotel services brochure is wrong. Just to be clear I would I have awarded 2 stars but the above very positive points, particularly the staff, meant I raised this to a 4. I've ticked this off as visited!!
