Over Hilton Kuching

"A bit of a mixed bag"
Stayed at the Hilton on a recent visit to Kuching this month and I came away with decidedly mixed feelings. The good - the hotel has the best location in town, right across the street from the river. I would imagine river-view rooms would be quite nice. Room rates were very reasonable. Reception was helpful We used the travel agency in the lobby who arranged our day trips - excellent Not so good - While the rooms were large they had a mixture of renovated but in an old style so that I had to look hard to see what was new and what was old. The entire hotel is designed in a very basic way and many areas just need a facelift - bar, lobby, breakfast area, floor corridors of white walls, Hall carpets are stained It has been a while since we had a room with a bathtub and a shower curtain and we don't like it.....I'll take a glass door any day. And for us the most annoying thing was the strong smell of disinfectant/deodorizer that we choked on every time we left the elevator and walked along the corridor to our room. We thought that perhaps it was just on our floor but no we checked and it was on other floors as well. It is almost as if the entire hotel was a smoking hotel and they were trying to eliminate the smells with a big can of Fabreeze.... We discovered the poolside bar area on the last night but it didn't matter as a small can of beer was 28 ringgit! Quite possibly the most-expensive beer in all of Malaysia.... no wonder there was no one sitting there. The inside bar has a happy hour which is a much better deal or go across the street to the night food stands and buy cold cans for 4 ringgit. Breakfast, while having a wide selection was not that Western-friendly and what there was was not that good. Probably best to stick to the Malaysia specialities. As an Honors member I would probably go back otherwise I would check out the Pullman next door.
"After 40 hours+ in transit, no room ready"
Finally got into a fairly nice room in an hour and a half after our small group arrived. Don't believe check in is at 3. No apology. No free drink. Grumpy desk clerks who gave us the wrong receipt. The manager was missing. WiFi is either non secure or you pay for it . This is supposed to be a Hilton. Will recommend that Road Scholar find a new place.
"Nice Cozy Room. Slippery Bathroom Floors"
Stayed 3 nights in the King Suite for a business trip. Positives - The room is cozy and spacious while the bed is nice. - The Free WIFI is fast and stable, which helped me get some work done. - The bedroom has a nice view of the sarawak river and the state legislative building - The food at the chinese restaurant Toh Yuen and breakfast at the Waterfront Cafe are nice Negatives - The bathroom while spacious appears a little aged and the floor is slippery, which is not safe for kids. - I did some ironing, but the housekeeping didn't return the iron and the board back in its place Conclusion Among the better hotels in Kuching. Hope they do something about the slippery floors.
"Actually a 3.5 - Adequate for an International Hilton"
First the pluses - great location on the river and friendly staff in the Executive Lounge/Check-In. The property is sadly in need of a renovation. Carpet in the elevator lobby of floor 11 shows wrinkles that could trip one. Furniture is sparse and beyond its use by date. Breakfast area is cramped between 7 and 8:30. If this hotel was in the US, it would soon be converted to a Doubletree. There must be better properties in Kuching.
"Yet another lacklustre Hilton property."
This is an old, old building that needs to be completely gutted & renovated. Far better places to stay in downtown Kuching, though Hilton has one of the better river views, & the location is spot-on for touring the old City on foot. The Executive Lounge is a huge let down & not worth the extra cost. Breakfast pastries were so hard & stale they cold not be cut with a fork alone. VERY limited drink selection for the far-too-early cocktail hour as others have pointed out. Evening cocktail choices were Malibu Rum, Bombay Gin, 1 kind of whiskey or vodka, 1 red & 1 white wine. Breakfast was equally unimpressive in both the Executive Lounge & main restaurant. Hilton, more than any other International chain we patronize, suffers from being unable to deliver "consistency" of product. A guest NEVER knows what to expect from a Hilton-branded hotel, until they walk through the front door. Don't know why Hilton continues to roll out additional brands, when they fail to provide a consistent product across their main brand - Hilton. This is a typical old property with stained & worn carpet, with cracked & chipped woodwork that has had layers of paint haphazardly applied over the years to try to cover up the heavy use. Poor room lighting & old bathroom fixtures. Place is LONG overdue for a complete renovation. Especially in such a prime location. All the staff we encountered were polite, courteous & eager to help, & housekeeping was very good, which is always welcomed.
