"stunning view, services and the good old days"
the first time i was here back in 2010. the service is good. friendly and welcoming staff. cleanliness is at the highest quality control. the pool just nice. far from the city and it is very relaxing. suitable for friends and family. now, i return here again in 2016. still, the quality maintained. this is so far, the best resort in Miri? or perhaps in Sarawak generally. the state never had this kind of amazing international resort. appreciate the view. five star. thumbs up for the staff.
"The Best Hotel!!"
Been here on 2010. It was a great place to stay. We had big and spacious room for stay. The place is awesome. Great view for photos. Staff are friendly and service were the best!! Indeed we were very satisfied with this hotel.
"Great staff elevate this value 4* resort to an Excellent rating"
When reviewing hotels and resorts it's always important to take the room rate into account and compare the experience with suitable benchmarks. There's no point comparing the Marriott Miri with a resort in the Maldives that would cost ten times as much or even the upscale resorts in Langkawi that cost three to four times as much. It's important to remember that this property is on an obscure stretch of beach in Sarawak facing the South China Sea outside a nondescript town that's mainly known as a drop off point for people working in oil and gas. And it costs around RM300++ (£60) a night. As such, it is excellent and I enjoyed my stay so much (a random weekend break from KL) that I would be very happy coming back here for sun and relaxation rather than head to Port Dickson or Langkawi or Pangkor or any of the rundown resorts around Kuantan and Cherating on the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Miri is a small place and the only thing of interest is Malaysia's first oil well. However, it does mean that from stepping off the plane (2.5 hours flight from KL costing £50 with MAS) to check in at the hotel is about 20 minutes which is great. The front desk was so wonderfully welcoming and helpful and I was greeted enthusiastically. I'd requested an early check in at 12pm and they were ready for me with a welcome drink, cold towel and my sea view room in the main block. The hotel's being refurbished and one low-rise wing is done already. I didn't get one of these rooms (the pictures look nice) but they're a walk away from the main hotel and don't have views. My sea view room was not refurbished but was perfectly well maintained. My only observation about the sea view is that the hotel is at the wrong angle to see the beautiful sunsets over the South China Sea which is a shame. In fact, the hotel as a whole is strangely placed because it's on the water but there's no beach. The pool backs on to the waterfront but instead of a beach there's a row of large concrete breakers. Five minutes walk away is a beautiful beach so it feels odd that the best resort hotel in the area is not actually on it. The room had all the amenities you would expect (toothbrushes, shaving cream etc.) and tea and coffee making facilities and I was very comfortable in it. Exploring the grounds I found a good quality gym (open to private members). The pool and bar are the resort's main attraction and they were deserted when I stayed (out of season). Saturday things picked up a little and they put a large inflatable thing in the pool for children to play on. I timed my stay so I was there for a Thursday evening when the pool bar has a bar-be-cue buffet with two hours of free flow wine for around RM100. I enjoyed that. Breakfast in the buffet was also very good with numerous food stations and a decent choice of Asian and Western foods. By day two the staff had remembered that I drink Cappuccino. Compared to truly upscale 5* Asian resorts, the Marriott Miri is a 4* property however for the price and remote location it offers good value and a good experience. The staff were uniformly excellent and somehow my name got around because by the second day they were all greeting me by name. Unlike hotels in, say, KL or Langkawi where the staff are mostly employed from abroad, the staff here seem to be locals which - given the fact that Miri is a small town - means they've probably all known each other since school. This does create a very friendly atmosphere and credit must go to the hotel management and its training programmes for delivering 5* service here. So, no beach at the resort but walk to the right out of the hotel and there's a lovely clean beach with incredible sunset views. Easily found because there's a KFC and Pizza Hut there. However I would implore you to go instead to the cafe/restaurant Mama Mia that's also found there. Good quality Western food (huge salads - rare to find in Malaysia) and RM15 pints of beer from 2pm-9pm (wine is RM10 a glass) I went there three days in the late afternoon around sunset. If you have children then this beach and this cafe will meet all your requirements. I was astonished to find such a good quality Western place on a beach outside Miri in Sarawak. You probably won't find anything like this on the entire east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Elsewhere, much is made of the Chinese seafood restaurant Tanjong across the road. I tried it and wasn't impressed having had much better in similar restaurants across Malaysia. Also, they had turtles in the tanks alongside the fish. Presumably to eat :-(. I had a better meal at the Marina Sea Horse Bistro which is about five minutes walk along the main road the other way towards Miri. I also walked (25 minutes at a brisk pace so don't do it unless you are really desperate) to Miri's new development - the Marina. The name conjures up images of a quaint harbour full of yachts however this is in reality a few parallel rows of unbranded restaurants and bars some distance inland from the water's edge. Probably gets busy weekend evenings but there's not much of interest to tourists here. This was my first Marriott resort and I picked it out after Marriott bought Starwood and so my SPG Platinum status is now matched at Marriott properties. Having booked the entry-level room for RM300 I got an upgrade to a sea view room that should cost around RM400, breakfast, late check out and a cocktail thrown in at the pool bar as well as being treated like a king by the staff. The same owner also operates the Marriott Mulu in the jungle. Based on my good experience here, this hotel is now high on my list.
"Best resort in Sarawak, Malaysia"
To Miri Marriott team, Thank you for your great hospitalisation during our stay. We organised a company dinner with stay at this hotel few days back. The sales manager Ms.Cynthia was very helpful and informative. She made herself available throughout the 3 days stay. This hotel has the best dinner in Miri. The quality and quantity of the BBQ buffet dinner is more than satisfying. Mr. Frankie and his team provide first class service during the dinner. We will definitely work with this hotel for our future event. Thank you.
The Couisants at the Marriott Resort in Miri, East Malaysia are amazing. Compliments to the chef! Generally speaking, a super friendly hotel. Wouldn't call it 5 star, as they would like, but given the renovations and general layout of the resort, it is fine. Food just ok... but Couisants amazing.
