"Lazy Holiday"

We stayed 11 nights in a Hillside Villa we had a fabulous view we had the Sun Rise every morning from our balcony . The Villa was very spacious an outside bath area. a shower 2 wash bowels , well stocked with toiletries and towels. A separate dressing area 2 large wardrobes ,drawers . Good size bedroom area looking out onto the balcony great size with chairs and table. We ate at Fishermans Cove .4 nights which is more formal excellent food. Uncle Lims Chinese, excellent food good atmosphere lots of choices we ate there 3 nights. Feast Village which served a very good selection for breakfast we also ate there in the evening 3 nights Difficult to choose where to eat as all the restaurants gave good service and good food. Chapmans bar was at Emerald Bay beach which was accessed by the shuttle bus they were continuously running up and down all day and all night as you also needed them for two of the restaurants or wherever you needed a lift to. Beach bar had a good selection of food and drinks , beach staff were very good at setting beds up with towels and water, also made a mean Cappuccino 😃 If you want a lazy relaxing holiday this is the place for you as there is not a lot to do

"Paradise - we'll be back."

We booked our stay as a once-in-a-lifetime trip to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary (and finally take the honeymoon that we never had at the time). My wife's one stipulation was that she wanted to stay in huts on stilts, over the sea - and I fancied going somewhere a bit out of the ordinary. So we chose Pangkor Laut. We had a spa villa, with a full-board package which included a free massage every day and a bottle of champagne on arrival. (Well if you're going treat yourself, you might as well do it properly, eh?) We had a four hour transfer from KL, in a very comfortable car, complete with cold bottled water, magazines to read, and wi-fi(!). Very luxurious. That was followed by a short boat ride over to the island and that's where the real luxury started. As the island appear into view you know you're in for something special. It's as picturesque as you'd hope. The whole resort is punctuated with little bowls of flowers, arranged in pretty patterns - changed on a daily basis. Even the sand ashtrays were stamped with a 'PLR' logo and adorned with flowers. If you're going to smoke yourself to death, you might as well use a swanky ashtray, right? It's those little details that made a difference - and they were present throughout our stay. The hut (is that the word? Doesn't quite do it justice...) we stayed in was beautiful - the bath was filled with flower petals - there was a chocolate cake with 'Welcome' piped on the plate when we arrived - fresh fruit in the room each day - stuff like that. Wonderful. Unless you have a serious aversion to flower-petals, I suppose. The food was very, very good - the breakfast buffet had everything you could wish for, unless you're after pork-products, but hey - you can live without bacon when the freshly cooked roti are that good. Or the lovely Chinese filled pao. Or the nasi lemak (classic Malay breakfast - rice, boiled egg, crispy anchovies, peanuts, chilli sauce - it's awesome. Trust me). Or the freshly cooked waffles. Or the... well.. you get the point. We had a full board package which included three course lunch and three course dinner. We ate at each of the restaurants during our stay and they were all very good. The lunch menu isn’t the most varied, between restaurants, but pretty much everything we tried was delicious. My one ‘criticism’ about the lunch is that three courses is not at all necessary, when the portion sizes are that large. But, being the troopers we are, we did our best to eat it all. And it was delicious. Evening meals needed booking in advance and you could choose from either Feast Village, where breakfast is served (a pretty varied menu – plenty of delicious Asian dishes – and a fair few Western dishes – can’t comment on those); Uncle Lim’s (Chinese food – in a beautiful setting, perched on top of a rock. We liked it but didn’t love it); The Straits (excellent food in a beautiful intimate setting overlooking Pangkor island – I think this one costs a supplement – but was worth it. Nice to talk to Goh Wy, Ramjan and…the chef, who spent ages chatting to us, and told us the secrets of her amazing tamarind sauce. Which I’ve since forgotten, of course); Fisherman’s Cove (the ‘posh’ one. No children*. Very good food, well cooked, but suffered a bit from Nouvelle Cuisine Syndrome. The Wagyu steak really was sublime, but having a single spear of asparagus on the plate seemed a bit…y’know...pointless). But I’m being picky. Generally – the food was excellent. The scenery was a delight, and there’s plenty of interesting wildlife around, if you’re into that sort of thing. From the tree full – and I mean FULL – of bats, to the hornbills that hop around the place, or the monitor lizards that loaf about, there’s plenty to gawp at. We also saw a wild boar, monkeys, sea otters, a squid/cuttlefish, a spider that looked like it would happily eat a toddler in one bite, and plenty of eagles. It’s that kind of place. Amazing. Which leads nicely to the jungle trek – led by a lovely chap called Aris. What a guy. He should have his own TV show or something. Rarely do you meet someone so knowledgeable, passionate and entertaining. His enthusiasm made the trek from one side of the island into a delightful experience. If you visit Pangkor Laut, you MUST do it. Just be prepared to get sweaty. Very sweaty. At the end of the jungle trek, you end up at the glorious Emerald Bay – the beach. It’s one of the loveliest places I’ve ever been. Bobbing around in the bath-warm sea with a mojito in my hand is genuinely one of the happiest moments in my life. And I’m not easily pleased (see previous overly-picky restaurant critiques as evidence). The spa was really great, too. A 45 minute bathing ‘routine’ (complete with the most refreshing green tea ever), followed by a firm pummelling from one of the lovely ladies there. I didn’t even mind the fact that I had to get naked to have it (though my dignity was largely covered by one of the Pangkor Laut sarongs, which you get to keep afterwards, as a gift). My wife, who’s been to several spas, said it was absolutely wonderful. I’m not much of a spa goer – so I really have much to compare it to, but I really enjoyed it too. We filled our days doing nothing. Which was exactly what we wanted to do. It was bliss. The whole place was very quiet and relaxed. Half the time it felt like we were the only people around. And that was perfect. In the past, we’ve found that we often get to the end of a holiday and think “That was nice, but I’m ready to go home now”. When we left Pangkor Laut we were both absolutely gutted to be leaving. We’ll miss more or less everything about it. I’ve already started saving for our 20th wedding anniversary. *Actually, the phrase used was ‘Children over 16 are welcome’, which neatly encapsulates the subtle polite ‘vibe’ of Pangkor Laut.

"5 Star Resort"

Truly a 5 star resort in Malaysia, the high level of service was experienced starting from the check-in until the day we check-out. We were given a welcoming drink to quench our thirst and fresh towels to freshen up when we stepped into their private check-in office at the Marina Island Jetty. We were greeted another welcome drink and fresh towels when we arrived by speed boat to their private island. The room was huge and our room was facing the sea. The room was equipped with an LED TV with 20 or more so channels. We were loaned with a pocket wifi which is really convenient where we can be connected to the internet even outdoors. If I am not wrong, each room has a private outdoor bathtub which can be really romantic for couples. This resort provides turndown service apart from the usual daily room cleaning service. After dinner, couple returning to their room would be greeted with a cleaned toned down room ambience with calming aroma candle. In my opinion, the service level and the ambience of the restaurants in this resort is good. However, most of the food do not have the wow factor in the taste department. Some restaurants or places of interest are quite a distance from the lobby. Therefore, the shuttle service do help the guests to commute and it is just 15-20 mins wait Lastly, would like to give special mentions to the resort staffs named Sam, Dinesh, Nicole which I felt had performed more than we had expected.

"Beautifull resort"

Great hospitallity, like a royalty. Hill villa with a beautifull view. Free water and shuttle to the beach. Most People eat by Uncle Lin. Good food. Unpleasant visit of 3 monkey's in our room. They try to steel our stuf. When we shout hard the get out. But they show their teeth and grrr. Very scarry. We called 3 times the Reception, but nobody came. No help or care after wards.

"Wonderful experience after a shaky start"

We arrived to a bit of a mix-up over the allocation of our specific sea villa which seemed like it may not get sorted, but once the Front Office manager got involved he was willing and able to provide a solution way beyond our expectations. The friendly and dedicated service continued to delight us throughout our brief 2 night stay - when my wife fainted in the restaurant one evening (due to an virus picked up before we arrived) the team of staff, including from the Spa, rallied round to help, and the resort doctor was called back from his evening out on the mainland to assist. Our specific issues aside, the resort is just as beautiful and exotic as other reviewers describe. Highlights for us were Emerald Bay, the nature walk and the wildlife in general - hornbills up close, giant monitor lizards, fruit bats and a sea otter. Favourite restaurant was Uncle Lim's. Ron and Mary - get in touch if you read this !
