"Peace of haven in Malaysia"

We had a wonderful time in first Bubu Resort and then Bubu Villa. We enjoyed the activities provided by the hotel. Staff was so nice and helpful. This place is perfect to relax and have a good time. It's very well located, just in front of Long Beach. It's so good to take breakfast with the sound of the waves. I really recommend this place for couples and families.

"Terribly overpriced, poor product pricing "

A real shame actually as the pricing strategy is poorly executed as for this type of pricing the room quality one would expect has to be way much better. Showers were really poor, 2 -3 star shower and overall room quality but with 5 star pricing. Otherwise if the pricing was reduced by 15-20% I would give it a 5 star rating as it is in an amazing location but given the price and poor product I would not stay for Long, max 2 or 3 days and would rather stay elsewhere for the same price in this region. Real shame as the place has real potential.

"A lot of potential but highly overpriced and needs updating - not the luxury you'd expect"

I've gone back and forth on what rating I was going to give BuBu Resort and think unfortunately, for the price and how the hotel markets itself, I'm going to have to go with the lower score (poor as opposed to average) I have travelled to many countries in South East Asia and this is the most expensive hotel I've stayed at in Malaysia. I decided to stay at BuBu for a treat as it prides itself on luxury, but I'd say this hotel is more mid-range and the price should reflect this. Having read the reviews I decided to give it a shot and had the cost of this hotel been lower, I'd likely have given it a better rating as it would have changed my expectations. My guess at the reason the price is so high is because they can charge a premium due to the very poor other accommodation at Long Beach, but I expect this might change with the new hotel being built next door. I'm writing this review in a lot of detail with the hopes that it helps the owner and resort staff improve their offering because after spending a lot of time researching where to stay at Long Beach and shelling out for a little bit of luxury, it just wasn't up to what you expect. I would also say that this review is based on judging the hotel as being luxury (not mid-range) and comments are in relation this expectation. Good points - Two free cocktails per person a day from 5-6pm from an extensive menu - Free taxi boat twice daily to nearby Turtle Bay due to construction next door, including a bottle of water per person and snorkel kit - Nice restaurant area with good selection of food (Santai Restaurant) - Arguably the best location on Long Beach on the north side away from the loud bars at night - Use of private sun loungers with cushions and umbrellas outside the hotel for guests only - Fantastic view across the bay from the rooms - Very informative welcome from the resort manager and welcome drink on arrival - Robes provided in the room are a nice touch - Good coffee with a proper espresso machine - Reasonable breakfast - fresh croissants and egg station are good - Help with bags to and from room for check-in/check-out - Water taxi service with competitive prices - Private balcony for each room To be improved - General hotel improvements. The resort looks like it needs refurbishment in parts considering the steep price to stay here. From the rooms, to the roof and decking (see photos). It feels as though things aren't updated unless absolutely necessary - My main gripe is the rooms. The rooms are dated and really need updating. Everything is worn and there is no attention to detail in the finish (paint splattered on the bedside tables and balcony, dirty fan, very scuffed walls etc) - Our bathroom was small and had mouldy seals between tiles, the shower didn't drain water properly and the ceiling was dirty and moulding. The water that comes out of the shower also isn't very warm, despite having water heaters. The while bathroom also gets wet when you shower due to the size - There are very few basic amenities in the room that you'd expect for this cost - no tea/coffee, iron, phone, room service, hotel information booklet, minibar, pen and pad etc. The only things were a safe, robes and daily toiletries (though we didn't get another shower gel on our second day) - Cocktail hour is very hectic for the staff and I'd suggest having this over two hours to ease the service or adding more staff. We really appreciated that the drinks were complimentary, however, we waited 40mins to be brought a menu on one night and 30 on another, not including actually having the drink served to us, despite arriving at 5-5.15pm - The charge is 20RM per day for a snorkel because they classify the mask and the tube as separate items. This really should be free, especially as you can have them for free if you go to Turtle Bay (as mentioned above) Considering this is an additional £8 per day for two people, it seems extremely expensive - The construction next door is a problem. I understand the hotel can't do anything about this, but the work goes on longer than the suggest working hours (9am-5pm) and starts at about 8 in the morning until dark. I'd suggest offering a better price during this time or maybe even the snorkels for free. It's great that they offer the boat to Turtle Bay as mentioned - The service in the restaurant is chaotic and slow. There is no attention to who ordered or sat down first and the staff seem to not be able to keep up with the demand, which I don't and think is their fault. We also shelled out 90RM for king prawns after being told they were a must have on arrival, only to be brought 6 small prawns instead with no explanation on why, just a casual remark that we would have 6 small instead of 2 big which just wasn't acceptable considering the cost. After raising this with the waitress she sent it back and the king prawns arrived (I've written a separate review on Santai, which is this restaurant) - No service on the beach for drinks/snacks other than at cocktail hour (or at least no one came over to us, so I apologise if this is incorrect) - Breakfast is pretty basic and there is no table service for tea/coffee which I'd expect for the price - The level of service could be improved and it would be great if the staff could be a little more attentive. I think a few more hands could help this I think the points mentioned could be easily addressed by either making these improvements or lowering the standard of the hotel to mid-range.

"Amazing views, great amenities, great food, but a few negatives"

I stayed here with friends for 4 nights. Firstly the positives, a lot more of these than negative When you get off the ferry to the island Bubu is the first hotel (luckily) as there is no path or walkways once you are off the jetty. i saw many people struggle with large roller bags along the sand past Bubu. Check in was quick and easy and we where greeted as we walked up off the sand, welcome drink is included and our bags where taken to our room for us. we where on the 2nd floor with a partial sea view which was very nice. there is no elevator but the walk up the stairs is not too stressful. The Bubu has two restaurants, we did not try the Japanese restaurant, but the main restaurant is very good with asian, western and bbq including seafood. its not cheap compared to Malaysian prices but it is by no means expensive. We ate lunch and dinner there several times and was never disappointed. they also do a number of fresh juices and milkshakes. The breakfasts are severed in a separate area and is a buffet. The breakfast is good but not a huge selection, nice touch is eggs cooked to order as well as pancakes made fresh as well as fresh made to order coffee and teas. There are also a number of sunbeds reserved just for Bubu residents which where nice and comfy with a table in the middle under an umbrella, there are two areas to choose from and it was always relatively easy to get a spot. yo also go a voucher for each person for a beach towel which you can use as many times as you like. The main restaurant also had some seating on the beach which in the afternoon was in the shade and was a great spot to have a beer or one of your two free cocktails per person between 5 and 6. The recreation desk offers different snorkeling options on other islands. the prices are cheap but you can find cheaper elsewhere on Long beach. we used them for easy access and it was very good. they hire a 3rd party boat operator to take you around with Bubu supplying life jacket and snorkeling equipment. Are tour guide was amazing and we had a great time with a 3 hour 4 area adventure, and you are picked up and dropped off on the beach in front of Bubu 10 meters from the hotel. really easy. You an snorkel right under the jetty if you want. there are heaps of fish around the Bubu beach and under the jetty. its a nice was to waste an hour or so and its no more than 50m from your door. Bubu rent out the snorkel for 20rm each. Bubu is up one end of long beach, with the walk to the other end being less than 10 minutes, There are other bars and restaurants along the beach, but we found Bubu to be the best. Now the not so positive The rooms are ok but not that large. the bed is ok bt not super comfy and the linen and towels are not soft at all. the bathroom is very small. it is an island so the shower is a small water heater on a wall but that is normal throughout Asian islands. As a few other reviews stated, there is construction or renovation of a hotel next door, the constant noise is from about 10am until 5pm so it can ruin the quite relaxing scene people want on a paradise island like this. It was frustrating that this was not mentioned on the website or any remuneration was offered in the way of vouchers or discounts (unless that is what the free cocktails was for?) The room service is done very late in the day, sometimes at like 4pm, On a few days we had been out all morning and come back after lunch and the room was still not cleaned. The toilet and shower provided for the beach and restaurant is dark, dirty and not maintained at all. its was the most disappointing part. Many of the females the group decided to go to the room instead of use the provided toilet. The shower does not even have a shower head and is just a huge stream of water. For the price i thought it was not great value but still a nice spot Overall I liked staying in Bubu and would again, but as i said it was not worth the money in my opinion, however walking up and down Long Beach there are not a lot mid level to high level options on Long beach.

"No boo-boo's at Bubu! "

Having read other reviews of Bubu resort I decided to go and stay with an open mind. I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised! Firstly I have to say that Fang at the head office was brilliant in organising transfers for us from our hotel in Kota Bharu to the island. Everything was on time and the staff were really efficient. Fang even offered us a contra voucher of 554 ringits to use at the resort when our flight was delayed and consequently lost one nights stay. This was really appreciated by us and meant we could enjoy some drinks and a massage or two! As others have said the rooms do need a little bit of work but this is an island and having looked at other places on Kecil during our stay, Bubu was one of the best. The staff at Bubu are amazing and will help you with anything you need - so friendly! I wholeheartedly recommend you eat at Santai restaurant- the food is incredible. They have a Thai chef and so it is definitely worth trying the Asian dishes as they are really authentic. My boyfriend and I agreed that the Phad Thai was the best we had ever eaten! I should mention,as others have, that there are building works at the end of the beach which is a little bit off putting when you are listening to the whirring of a generator all day on the beach. You do get used to it very quickly though. Overall Bubu is a lovely resort, good food, beautiful beach area and superb staff. I wasn't disappointed!
