"Stunning Location and Helpful Staff"

   14-01-2017
We have just spent four nights at Saman. First, the location is absolutely stunning - set on a small headland between two arcs of white sand, a couple of kilometres in either direction. A highlight for us was to walk to the far end of the beach while watching the fishermen haul in their catch in the early morning sun. Second, the resort is relatively small (I think about 25 villas) and therefore quiet. If you are under 30 and wanting to party the night away maybe best to look elsewhere. If you want to relax to the sound of the waves crashing on the beach this is for you. Third, the building itself is, to my mind, well maintained and references of some reviewers to the "gloomy" hallway are overstated. There is a staircase of perhaps 15 metres that is in fairness relatively dark presumably by design because of the theatre of what it leads to but that would be to spoil the surprise! It is not cutting edge "Aman Resort" uber design, just a well executed set of buildings that sit well in an extraordinary landscape. We did not notice any shortcomings in maintenance. The pool in particular was crystal clear. The room was well cleaned. Fourth, the menu was varied and well executed. As curry lovers, we particularly enjoyed the local seafood curry but there is something for everyone, including steak etc if that is your preference. Last, the place is made by its staff who were at all times attentive and friendly. By some measure, Saman Villas represented the best service we received on our trip to Sri Lanka and the other places we stayed were not at all bad as a baseline. Thoroughly recommend it.

"Quaint Rustic Hideaway"

   14-01-2017
Two night stay here at the end of our trip to sri lanka. The staff is very gracious and very accommodating. The food is wonderful. I don't quite understand the complaints in other reviews about prices, its all made in house and I think the quality of the food was great. They even made me lunu miris upon request. its a small, cozy resort that offers great views and many different options if you want to sit and watch the ocean and the local fisherman. I would skip the private pool villas, they are great in theory, but the better views are the southern side of the resort and just not worth the extra money (in my opinion). When we were they do not get much sun and are not private as many other reviewers have commented. There is also a lively beach bar across the lagoon which you can hear playing very loud dance music on this side of the resort (we were there on a Saturday night). We preferred the large resort infinity pool, it got more sun and had a more pleasing vista. The outdoor sitting areas throughout the resort are perfect for an evening glass of wine. The rooms are fine examples of the craftsmanship that exists in sri lanka. The minibar was stocked better than other resorts we visited in the region and had the important item, cashews. I do think the rooms would benefit from some modernization, but not too much, you want to feel like you are in sri lanka. I do have to mention I love the frankness of the messages that are in the rooms such as "The dry cleaning service is outsourced to the only laundry nearby. Quality of the dry cleaning may not be up to the standard you would normally expect". Bugs are clearly an issue, but hey you are in a tropical climate, what do you expect? They use a lot of insecticides to keep pests away, especially with direct access to the lovely outdoor bathroom. You might want to bring a few plastic bags to create a barrier around your clothes so they don't pick up the solvent smell.

"This is your place if you need a peaceful, quiet place to relax"

- excellent geographical location - excellent facility - friendly staff - very good kitchen serving local and international courses The hotel is the right place for those who are seeking a place where the privacy is taken seriously. The staff is well educated, polite and is ready to fulfill the needs of their guests.

"Christmas dinner "

   10-01-2017
We were six friends having our Christmas dinner at Saman Villas, at the pool pavilion. The atmosphere by the pool was great and made the evening very special. The food, especially the lobster, was really good. The service was also great. We recommend Saman Villas for special occasions!

"Peaceful short break to Bentota - Saman Villas"

   10-01-2017
My wife and I decided on a short breakaway to Sri Lanka for our anniversary and her birthday, and it was the first time either of us had been there. There were many beach resorts to choose from – the majority of them being located along the West/South coast of the island. We opted to stay in Saman Villas situated in Bentota, a small town located approximately 1 ¾ hours car journey away from Colombo airport. We stayed in Saman Villas for 5 nights choosing the Deluxe Villa Suite with Private Pool, and it was just what we both wanted – a peaceful and tranquil vacation, which allowed us both to relax and unwind. We arrived at Colombo airport just after midnight as our flight had been delayed by over an hour. We had pre-booked the airport transfer upon our online room reservation with Saman Villas, so we were both happy to be greeted by our driver with a welcoming smile. Given he had probably waited at the airport for a while, plus the fact it was already pretty late and that he had just under a two-hour drive ahead of him, he was very friendly and provided us with lots of interesting and informative facts about Sri Lanka during our journey to the villa! Upon our arrival to Saman Villas, we were greeted and given a warm welcome by Front of house staff. Chamika was the main contact person throughout our stay and was very helpful and informative whenever we had a query, and stayed up waiting for our arrival to show us to our villa. It was spacious and had a traditional feel about it. The bed size was more than adequate and what I loved most was the bathroom, a small section of which was open-air. Although I had noticed small very minor defects in the room during our stay – such as loose wiring for one surround sound speaker, balcony doors slightly difficult to shut, a slightly ‘out-of-look’ lighting in the main lounge area – everything else was to a good standard. The breakfast a’ la carte menu selection offered different styles and we were provided more than sufficient food/drink – It encouraged us to over-indulge at times, leaving us too full to move from our seats! The restaurant staff were very accommodating and allowed us to configure our breakfast to how we wanted it. A slight disappointment was the quality and taste of the sausages and bacon, but everything else was good. Baddewithana and Rushan from the restaurant were both very friendly and provided good service throughout our stay. Although it was low season for the resort (there were not many guests, with only five occupied villas out of 27 during our stay), the staff were all very attentive and friendly, and did not compromise the level of service. Housekeeping staff came twice a day and left the villa very clean and tidy, and our private pool was cleaned daily. The staff were so attentive that they had noticed my wife’s birthday on her passport and surprised her with a small birthday cake and decorated our bed with flower petals spelling out a small birthday message! Also, a mention of our anniversary during a very brief general conversation with the head of Housekeeping Cyril, resulted in housekeeping staff decorating our bed with another thoughtful message! We also pre-booked a treatment session with the onsite spa and our massages were extremely relaxing and soothing. The gym was offered adequate albeit basic facilities – One suggestion would be to upgrade the weight machines to more modern equipment as they seemed a little dated and basic. Besides that, my wife and I made use of the gym facilities everyday and enjoyed the sense of feeling that we had the whole resort to ourselves during our stay! Given it was low season and not many guests staying at the resort, the main swimming pool was usually not occupied by anyone, but we still opted to enjoy our own private villa pool and utilised it during our stay. We had the ocean view and never got bored of hearing the sound of the ocean waves – the currents around this time of the year are renowned to be strong, hence why we opted not to go swimming in the sea. The grounds around the premises are well maintained, with staff kept busy ensuring the villas were clean and various buildings undergoing maintenance work in preparation for high season. The beaches beside the premises are nice to have a stroll along. We wanted to go for a swim in the sea but unfortunately the currents around the summer months are on the strong side so we decided against it. On our final night we decided to dine in the restaurant of the resort. The food was of a good standard but perhaps had room for improvement. It may have been because it was low season but we were expecting a larger selection of seafood or poultry dishes, or even perhaps a ‘Daily Specials’ menu to offer some options which suggested that the freshest local produce was sourced and used. Anyhow, the service was attentive and we were even presented by the waiting staff with a farewell cake. Upon our check-out, we were given a small gift by one of the senior members of staff – it was a framed photo of us on our last night taken which during our dinner with the farewell cake. This was a really nice touch to round off what was an enjoyable stay at Saman Villas. We would definitely recommend anyone to stay there, particularly those who are seeking a peaceful and tranquil getaway.
