"Cared for over supper!"

We called into the Hotel to review the menu whilst we were walking around Galle, we chatted to a waiter who then booked us our table, promising us one in the courtyard by the pool. From the moment we arrived for a meal we were looked after by this same waiter, excellent, perfect service! We had a lovely table on the terrace. We started with cocktails a Bellini and an excellent Martini. We both had fish for supper, I had an excellent tuna steak, cooked perfectly to my liking, pink in the middle. We shared a dessert Nice 'colonial' style place for supper in Galle, with good food.

"Full Of atmosphere "

Excellent stay from start to finish - which unfortunately was only one night. Great old colonial atmosphere, excellent staff and little gifts along the way. We stayed in a loft suite and as someone has mentioned the design is unusual but that is great, a welcome change. Food and location are perfect. Check is late (midday) and you are encouraged to continue to use the pool, changing area etc for as long you need until your pick up. This was 5pm for us, so the offer was very welcome. Check out the abandoned shipping office up the road, really interesting (ask David, the excellent hotel manager).

"A stay of two halves"

Walk into the Galle Fort Hotel and you think that everything is right with the world. You pass a shuttered veranda bar, then a dining room, a huge vase of heliconia, a vast lobby lounge and then a gorgeous outdoor restaurant with a view through the frangipane trees to the swimming pool. It’s only when you get past this that things go slightly pear-shaped. To start with we had one of the loft suites and I can tell you that it was quite the least practical room we have ever stayed in. Whoever designed this room from hell must have had the architectural equivalent of dyslexia. Everything was in the wrong place, on the wrong floor, so you were constantly going up and down the lethal triple staircase that lacks a hand rail. Fancy a shower? That’s the ground floor, in the sitting room, next to the basin which is in a cupboard that faces the door and the outside public veranda. Emerge from the shower and walk straight out into the sitting room - mind the step! - where the bath towels are jammed on to a rack. Bathrobes, fit for ten-year-olds, are upstairs. Where do you store your bag of toiletries? Would that be upstairs, in the bedroom, or in the sitting room next to the tea station? Fancy putting your clothes on? That’s upstairs, in the bedroom, where there isn’t a single chair. Need to visit the loo? That’s downstairs, in the sitting room, a nightmare descent in the dark so you keep a lot of lights on. And whenever you touch the floor the whole room creaks and so does the room next door. And so it goes. Totally, one hundred percent bonkers. The hands-on manager here, David Elgar, defends this design by claiming it’s an old building which keeps to 16th century Dutch layouts. Well, the building was a ruin and they sorted of started from scratch. And Dutch settlers might have slept upstairs for the coolness but they didn’t have showers downstairs. They either did it out of the window or they had chamber pots so maybe David could provide a nice Delftware version for loft suite guests. After only a few hours in the loft suite we admitted defeat by this ergonomic car crash and the management graciously agreed to switch us, gratis, to their Grand Apartment the next day. This was a different world, with a huge bedroom, a double sitting room, a dressing room and bathroom with an excellent shower. All on one floor, all where you need it. Yet there were still a few minor design issues which I won’t bore you with. The suite was also shared with another couple so that the sitting room was communal though in practice we never met our neighbours. Wifi was unobtainable in both our rooms but was excellent in the lobby area. What else? Well, there’s the pool. It’s a welcome little oasis in a stiflingly hot town but why have sharp industrial gravel around the edge of the pool to vex people without their shoes on and why have only seven sun loungers which are less comfortable than a waterboarding. Despite the many design blunders the GFH has absolutely masses of charm and character. The public areas are strikingly pretty and the staff are smiling and obliging. The food is varied and excellent, strong on fish dishes, and offers both European choices and traditional Sri Lankan curries. It’s of a higher quality than the restaurant in Amangalla and half the price. So a mixed experience for us. If we had been forced to remain in that loft suite we would been desperate to leave. As things turned out we wanted to stay. And that’s really down to the generosity of the staff. PS: My top tip for Galle. Get up at 6.30am and walk to the fish market. It’s a thrilling sight.

"Afternoon drink "

Nice place with great service. Happy hour on cocktails in the afternoon. We were there with our baby. The staff were very friendly. A beautiful hotel. Had some wine with snacks on their veranda. We will be back for sure.

"Dinner visit"

We passed this hotel on a walk through Galle Fort and as it was our last night in Sri Lanka decided to stay and have dinner. We had a very pleasant last night meal in delightful surroundings. The hotel facilities looked very nice, but we were not staying there, so cannot comment further.
