"Old Time Charm "
It was an experience to stay at he hotel which has retained all its old time charm of a tea factory. The hotel has all the modern amenities while it has retained the original building and structure. Situated among the tea plantations , it is surrounded with greenery and hills all around. A little far away from Main Nuwara Elliya ,but has number of activities if one wants to spend few days there. We got a very warm traditional welcome and comfortable rooms.Breakfast was a generous spread of American , Sri Lankan and Asian dishes. At Dining a great ambience with live music was just perfect . Except the a la cart prices at the restaurant were a little high but since you have no other place nearby you have to bear that cost .But in room dining had big portions and was value for money. The cool climate and scenic locales made up for everything. One thing , I should mention is that ,though we read about the HTF is kid friendly, but unfortunately we found that it was not so. We were a family of four adults with two kids,4 and 2 year old and it was an effort to keep them away from railings. The steep mountainsides were very dangerous for kids to play by themselves. On the whole it was an experience of a life time to stay there.
"Heaven!!! Awesome location in the midst of Greenery!!"
Stayed at the suite in the hotel which has a brilliant 270 degree view of the tea gardens surrounding the hotel...Amazing food with packed breakfast for the outdoor day trip that we did...Defintely a place where one should visit and stay..The courteous staff pampers you with tea and goodies in the evening...
"A unique place to stay"
We stayed for 2 nights at the Heritance tea factory during our holiday to Sri Lanka in September, we loved the remoteness as it ensured a restful, peaceful stay surrounded by tea plantations and vegetable gardens. On arrival we were greeted with a delicious hot spiced tea and our forehead was decorated with a bindi (gold dot) I wish I had asked what it signifies, possibly I didn’t hear when the staff member applied it. The building is beautifully restored retaining original machinery (loved the lift) and we enjoyed reading the history associated with the building and the plantation. There are small lounge areas, where you can sit and relax and enjoy a snack. We ordered a light lunch one day and it was a large portion and delicious, we were well served. The staff were all very pleasant and happy to help and looked great in their uniforms. The opportunity to go tea plucking dressed in a saree and sarong and to take home our pickings was great!! We certainly appreciate the back breaking work of the ‘pluckers’ as we now sit down with a cuppa! We enjoyed our tour of the mini tea factory and the tasting session with Nadaraj, he was so knowledgeable – and like wine tasting, (swill, gargle and spit,) there is a fine art to tea tasting. We also enjoyed a walk around the gardens with the gardener, who does a wonderful job maintaining the grounds which are as neat as a new pin. The food was great, plenty of a la carte options, and great snack options. There is also an option of dinning in the train carriage. Our room was pleasant, clean and tidy with a lovely view. A two night stay was just right for us. Thanks staff for an enjoyable and unique stay – we would recommend a two night stay here as part of your journey through Sri Lanka. An historic tea factory which turned into an amazing hotel surrounded by tea plantations. A must is to try the experience to pick up the tea. Great staff and very good food well cooked by Sanmu (hope i spelled it correctly). Definetely worth it!!! :-)
"Some tourists do care!"
I never thought much about fair trade practices until visiting this tea plantation. It's located on a vast stretch of land outside the main area of Newara Eliya. You enter it via a long road winding through the perfect rows of tea plants along the hills of the estate. Workers look like dots up on the steep slopes. It looks picture perfect. Then you pass by where the workers are housed. I can only describe it as a slum. Beat up corrugated roofs with items on top to hold them down. Houses that looked like shacks. Do the owners think we are blind? When you reach the hotel you see perfection again in the building, gardens, and interior. If visiting a tea plantation in Sri Lanka (a country well worth a visit) ask to be taken to a Fair Trade tea plantations.
