"Old world charm"
We have just spent a couple of nights at this converted tea factory where the service is second to none. Unfortunately we arrived in low cloud and rain which remained for the next day. We however braved the elements and went on the guided walk round the tea plantation where the guide was very knowledgeable about tea nod local village life.
"Beautiful, restored factory, felt like living in part of history."
We went during a off season storm period this January and therefore we weren't really able to enjoy the views that this hotel has to offer, we were very much in the clouds! However we were still able to enjoy the grounds and walk among the surrounding tea plantation, it was so peaceful. I don't know if we were upgraded or not, but we were given one of the 4 rooms with a balcony - despite it being on the corner of the hotel we never heard of the complaints of the wind we'd read about. The room was one of the smaller rooms on our travels but it met our needs absolutely fine, the bathroom was pleasant - the water pressure in the shower was spot on! The food was one of the best buffets we've ever eaten at, top quality food, the restaurant staff were so friendly and the whole atmosphere was amazing. We sat inside one of the really rainy days in the tea bar, reading books by the log fire- absolute bliss. My husband tried the Yaara tea, we watched the barman take so much care making it, a delightful experience. The hotel had no issue with us ordering a breakfast to take out because of our early start to Horton Plains and when we returned were very flexible with our tea picking experience because of the rain. The engine they fire up each evening was great and the free museum which showed the restoration is worth visiting.
"Colonial, beautiful and out of the way."
I personally hate a tourist trap, and this place is very much for tourists only but I absolutely loved it! It's a 5 star place with beautiful rooms, great service and a welcome luxury after guest houses and jungle lodges for a week prior! The decor and ambience is spot on for the colonial experience it wants to give you. Being 29 the only down for me was that at 10pm they closed the pool table area, and the bar closed at 11. There is nowhere local to go so you are forced to bed early. However to be fair, we were probably the youngest group in the hotel, everyone seemed to be in their late 50's to mid 60s. Although I'm unsure why, it's an incredible place! Upon check out we were lucky enough to be asked to plant a new tea tree for them, which was pretty cool! I would definitely visit if you want to see tea picking in Sri Lanka, and partake!
"Fabulous quaint period hotel"
This hotel is like a step back in time, it has been beautifully restored but still has the feel of the old tea factory. The rooms are small but cosy and welcoming. When we arrived it was quite cold and to have carpet and heating was lovely. The food wasn't too expensive, we ate from the al a cartel menu and the service was great. It was such a shame we only had one night as we left very early the next day and would of liked to have explored a little more. Great experience for a one off stay. Also the best nights sleep in Sri Lanka.
"Carriage experience "
Wow! Me and my wife have returned from a fantastic stay in Sri Lanka and the Maldives, and one of the stand out experiences was dinner in the carriage at the Heritance tea factory. Not only is this a fantastic hotel with unbelievable views, but there is an option (on a very limited basis) to have dinner in the carriage which is based on how they used to do things on the railways. All I can say is that the food and experience is fantastic, one not to be missed if you get the opportunity! The cost is approx 75 dollars a head (excluding wine) but splash out and enjoy the ride, you wont be disappointed!
