"Stay for 1 or 2 nights"
We stayed here in January 2018 but have been unable to write a review until now due to a dispute with our tour operator Kuoni which is now resolved. The history makes this place worth a visit. Nice room with great views bathroom in need of a deep clean. Great food and service. Slightly isolated, but enough to do for a couple of days.
"Wonderful converted tea factory- great views"
It is quite a drive from Kandy up into tea country but well worth it when the journey ends at this wonderful hotel which sits about 2,000 metres above sea level. They have retained many old features of the factory which is charming. The sunrises and sunsets are spectacular. The hotel, although quite large, seems to be able to hold everyone without it seeming to be too busy. It is really only at meal times where you actually see all the people. The rooms are very nice and a bit old English because they have been retrofitted. The staff were kind and helpful and worked very hard to see that we were all happy. The food is good and reasonably priced and they have a charming bar which allows smoking, not my thing but sister and mother were pleased. Well worth a visit, even just to see the views. We stayed two nights and recommend the Flowerdew suite.
"Jewel in the Crown"
Sri Lanka is a country of seasons, but if, like most travellers here, you tour around you will tend to encounter different climates. At this time the west coast is wet, the east coast sunny and the highlands (here) tend towards rain. Here it is significantly cooler than elsewhere, but not jumper weather. So why come here? This is the home of Sri Lankan tea... According to the people.... The best in the world.. The highest point in Sri Lanka we are told all is some 2500m above sea level. This hotel is 2,300m, or so, so you are high up in the hills, with spectacular views, either of the tea plantations, the rolling mists or amazing electrical storms. So that's the environment - it is around a 6 hour drive from Columbo, but well worth it. Most people stay here for a couple of days, which gives you time to go tea picking (a tourist "must") and to visit the local town and botanic gardens (1500 rps) This hotel is unique. It is a converted 4 storey tea factory. The outside is unchanged, so looks a little bleak, but the inside is an absolute treasure, where the care taken in the style and decorations is only matched by the care and attention to detail of the staff. I am not sure what to call the interior, but "industrial chic" comes to mind, with an original engine activated twice a day for show, but lovely nonetheless and an amazing restaurant and servery. Even the lift is retained as original with polished copper walls. The floor is polished wood and brass, well reflected in the mood lighting. Great care has been taken in all the public areas The staff are immaculately turned out and are eager to please. My wife was commenting on the puddings for example and whilst we were eating the team baked her an individual rhubarb crumble. The room is a good size and decorated in similar style to the public areas and we were lucky enough to have a corner room with amazing views across the plantation. Everything worked properly, from air con to WiFi. Some people have complained about noise as the walls aren't the thickest, but we didn't have a problem. The bathroom houses a small bath and shower combination which is the only area of the hotel I could criticise, as it needed a bit of sprucing up, but did the job etc... If you visit Sri Lanka, then you should do the tea tour and this is, in my opinion the best base you could select
"You will not want to leave this place!"
Having traveling for 7 hours on rail and 40 mins car ride up to the hotel, naturally I felt tired and irritable. However, the check-in was a breeze and there was even snacks and fruits prepared in the room. The balcony led to a scenic view of the nearby tea plantations, peaceful and serene. The quality of service by the staff is top-notched. There were issues with my bathroom and they got it fixed promptly while I was having dinner. All smiles from the staff who prepared the transport to and fro the railway station. Excellent! One side note would be to inform visitors about the rule on long pants for men when having dinner at the restaurant (thankfully I brought a pair due to the weather, but good to highlight to all visitors especially trekkers). The restaurant could use better ventilation as I smelled of food whenever I left the restuarant (though it may be unavoidable as they would like to keep the place warm). The gym could use a bit of maintenance as the air in it felt stale and smelled sweaty. Overall a very enjoyable stay, highly recommended and I will return!
We have being travelling through Asia for 2 and half. This hotel has been one of the best. The staff were amazing. Couldn’t be more helpful. One thing must be done here is the dinner in the railway car. The food was top notch. The waiter/train master was great. He made the night. Full dressed in period costume. He went around and check your tickets. Took loads of photos for us and also pose for loads. Great place. Great staff.
