Over Arenal Paraiso

"Ok, but not great. "
Grounds are beautiful, cabins are big (we stayed in a bigger one, there were smaller once on the other side), looks like they all have 2 double beds (hard), view of the volcano, good breakfast, nice staff. The only disappointing part (thus 3 stars) are the hot springs. They are truly sub par. Only 2 were somewhat warm, water is muddy. It's ok to stay there if u don't care about hot springs or planning to use hot springs somewhere else. We payed $100 plus tax per night and it was ok for that price, considering accommodations and breakfast. Went to a free tabacon river hot springs and to Baldi one day, which was excellent for $35 per person for the whole day.
"Cheap and Nasty"
Our room, number 123, is awful, it looked like it hadn't been refurbished for about 10 years: The paint on the walls is all chipped and scraped. The dark varnish on the furniture is also chipped and scraped in many places exposing the white wood underneath. The bottoms of the drawers are shorter than the drawers themselves leaving gaps that stuff can fall through. There are two double beds but no bedside lamps, just one light on the wall between them that doesn't illuminate either bed enough for reading. There are no easy chairs to sit on, no racks for your cases and no safe for your valuables. There are no convenient sockets to charge your phone, camera etc, your choice is either unplug the coffee machine, crawl under the dressing table or somehow clamber up the furniture to reach the socket that is strangely 3 meters up the wall. The shower room is tiny and has hardly any flat space to stand toiletries. The shower screen is a horrible aluminium frame with flimsy plastic panes that are too small and the black plastic seals are falling out. The pull-up mechanism to switch the water from the shin-high tap to the shower had been broken off and replaced with a screw which kept slipping down so you need to pull it up again at least twice per shower. There is no in room wifi. And to cap it all my wife left her phone on the table in the overpriced restaurant (that and reception being the only places that you can connect to wifi) but of course nobody found it or handed it in and neither the restaurant nor the reception staff seemed to care. All in all I don't know whether to be more upset with the hotel owners or our travel company, Cox & Kings, who claim that their "luxury holidays are planned by experts". One thing I do know though is that you should book somewhere else.
Lovely grounds with great views of Arenal volcano. Individual casitas with their own porch and view are comfortable, and the series of beautifully landscaped hot springs add to the relaxing feel. The staff was also well trained and accommodating. The breakfast buffet and restaurant were also good. A very good choice for a stay in this area.
We enjoyed our stay at Arenal Paraiso. The staff were excellent and their English was good. We felt that there was plenty to choose from at the included breakfast. We only ate supper there one night (which is not included), and we enjoyed that food as well. We liked that each room was a cabin with a view of the volcano. Our room was very clean and simple, which we liked. The location was beautiful. We enjoyed the hot pools, but probably only the hottest couple ones are what we think of as hot tub temps in the US. I would certainly recommend this to my friends.
If you're looking for the kind of old resort (as you might remember from the movie "Dirty Dancing" ;) but don't expect any Patrick Swayze or show at the end) this is where you have to go. The service was the worst we had in Costa Rica. Not a smile, waiters bored of their job... very poor service. Not recommended at all.
