"Our room was flooded!"
DeVille Boutique is a quaint older hotel in the heart of Panama City. The room was huge with a very comfortable bed. The room did smell musty. The breakfast was very nice. The major problem was that a water pipe broke across the hall and flooded our entire room. We had to evacuate at 2:30am. We were not offered any compensation from the hotel. It would be a good business hotel because of location and size of room but the internet was so slow it would be difficult.
"Clean and quiet"
I chose this boutique hotel based on other travelers' high reviews. It was extremely clean, it was quiet, and the location is good, on a side street just off Calle 50. We booked a deluxe suite, but I guess I forgot to choose "view" because we had two windows that looked onto a concrete wall a foot away, with an alleyway, that made me a little concerned for safety, though it was not an issue. It was, needless to say, very dark in the room all day, though I suppose this was why it was so quiet. The room was large, had a reasonably comfortable bed, sofa and chair, and a desk and chair, and a bathroom with a nice large shower. It was not fancy, but again, clean and quiet. The young men who worked at the desk were pleasant, when they looked up from their computer screens, and helpful when needed. The breakfast was adequate with basic fruits, rolls, porridge or cold cereal, and either sliced meat or eggs of some sort alternating daily. It was altogether a decent place, but I can't really rave about it as some other travelers have. There's not a lot of choices of places to eat nearby, unless you like the foreign versions of chains like Subway, Starbucks, KFC, or Pizza Hut. Beirut nearby was great, and there are also small markets for buying sundries, like bottled water or sodas, close by. The big Multiplaza mall is within a mile straight down the Calle 50, but don't even consider walking there, it's meant for car arrivals only.
"Nice hotel - Fantastic Value"
I've been staying a a variety of hotels on my various trips to Panama in search of the best value for the buck. I may have found it in the Hotel Deville. I am in sure in it's prime this was a 5-start hotel; and yet today it is trying to hold on to a four-star rating. All I can say is that it is a bit dated and there is not much English spoken by the staff. Other than that I was a big fan. The room and bathroom were both spacious, basically a junior suite; couch and chair, king bed, nice TV, great A/C. All in all very nice. The lobby was a bit cluttered and the business center very basic. But the hotel room was well worth the $50 / night. And that includes free WIFI, breakfast and free parking! Seriously great value for a very nice place.
"good on budget"
Panama City is an interesting place for the first time comers. Hard to get an idea of the centre. This hotel is in the middle of the financial district - close to 5 star behemoths like the Marriott and Hilton. Too far to walk to the old city. It has seen better days, but overall was a good place to stay. Large rooms - we had a king bed, couch, table and lots of room aside. Big bathroom. Found the staff helpful (especially Oscar), even with poor english. Tell taxi drivers to take you to Towerbank on Calle 50 - or take a card from the hotel. Internet worked well. good breakfasts - and the new restaurant (separately reviewed) is great.
"Fair for the price"
Somehow Hotel Deville is listed as 4-Star property. I'm sure it was at one time. But that time has long passed. I was in room 105. It was large. The furniture was fine. The bed was fine. The bathroom was large and looked nice. There was a nice flat screened TV. The desk clerks I dealt with were pleasant and helpful. The free breakfast consisted of breads, fresh fruit, juices, coffee and teas as well as scrambled eggs and bacon, nothing outstanding, but it was free. Those are the positives. Now for the negatives. The hallway was dark and dreary. I always felt I was walking in a basement. The room was musty. I couldn't get it cooled off well. I could hear people in other rooms as if we had adjoining rooms. The shower dribbled lukewarm water. The hair dryer did not work. The outlets in the room did not charge my electronics. The wifi did not work at all in my room or hallway. I had to charge my phone and use wifi in the lobby and spoke with others who were having to do the same thing. I booked this location through a Hotwire special based on a Four Star rating. I thought I was getting a great deal at $50 per night. Instead I paid a budget price for a budget hotel.
