"Lovely place to stay"

Lovely hotel right next to the beautiful beach ( hotel needs a bit of maintenance ) but what makes this place very special is an excellent staff that is very friendly, helpful and creates very nice atmosphere during the stay. Rooms and swimming pool are nice and clean, food was also lovely and fresh, served in buffet style. Air con and wifi worked, also other facilities such as gym and spa was available. We really enjoyed our stay in this place and definitely would recommend to visit.

"Adjusting to the slow pace"

The hotel is built on old reef - another example of "how the hell did they ever get building permission" like so many lodges/hotels in Kenya :) So it is a bit higher than the beach, to which you have direct access. Beautiful gardens, nice pools (2 kiddie pools, 1 big pool and 1 at the spa). There is a big baobab tree around which the hotel is built and lots of trees (with LOTS of vervet monkeys!). Make sure you have a look at the beautiful clear night sky dotted with many more stars than you can count. Service was sometimes a bit slow (they were still revving up to the busy season I think) but everyone was very polite and helpful. Yes, you will get a lot of people on the beach selling you stuff. Please be respectful of them as they are just trying to make a living. If they get too much in your face, just keep on saying "hapana hapana hapana " (no no no) :) There are camel rides you can do on the beach and right next to the hotel is a watersports place. You can rent a jetski, snorkeling material (if you have your own, bring it! Don't expect high quality rental equipment) and I believe you can also kitesurf or windsurf. We went on a 2-hour glass boat tour with snorkeling included. Lots of coral has died off but still some beautiful sights and fish to chase. Bakari, one of the assistants on the boat, kindly held our 1-year-old who was fast asleep while we were snorkeling. Needless to say: these guys can be trusted! Price was around Ksh 2500. They also do full day trips with a visit to the dolphins (if they are 'home') Husband had a massage at the spa and really enjoyed it (deep tissue massage, so according to him not for the faint-hearted) I read loads of reviews and the same is for this and other hotels: because of reduced tourist numbers going to the ocean side, the hotels are suffering. This hotel was the same: some of the amenities were not quite up to standard due to reduced use, especially the bathroom. It took us about 20min to fill up the jacuzzi in our room. Then when my hubby tried to switch it on, he got an electric shock through the button - we did mention this at reception and hopefully it will get fixed! TIP: to get access to warm water quicker through the shower, open the tap of the sink in the bathroom. I also went to the gym there and some of the equipment was off a lesser quality (still usable though). But the room was kept clean (if you think of all that sand coming in!), the a/c was working, the room was spacious, the bed comfy and there was a mosquito net. Babycots and babychairs are available. The lunch restaurant at the beach side had tasty food, but chef was really slow in cooking up our meals. But the one we had on Sunday(1/10) was very quick - they better keep that one! Breakfast and Dinner buffets were the same as buffets everywhere. Not a very big choice of desserts (mostly fruits and some dry chocolate cake). The pastry bar of which they boast wasn't open due to (I think) the small amount of visitors.

"Lovely place one must Visit"

Lovely hotel with scenic environment .Good for business and holiday .excellent staff and good meals .Would recommend any one who wants a place for holiday or doing business to visit Diani Reef Resort $ Spa

"Hotel and grounds are in a bad state"

The good - staff are friendly. Very welcoming and helpful. They will go out of their way to help and accommodate. Rooms are well kept and air con works well plus wifi all round. The bad - hotel is run down not refurbished for a long time. The reception area smells of stagnation from the pond water that has not been cleaned for a while. The floors everywhere have not been washed clean. The bathrooms are old and worn and showers do not work. The wooden deck on beach bar as well as bridge over swimming pool are a health hazard. The boards are not maintained and are a trip hazard. Over 200 rooms but we could only see around 30 guests. We now know why. Walked to next door hotel from the beach The Southern Palm hotel. Much better than here. We are checking out after 2 nights of a 7 night stay. Can't enjoy ourselves and want to leave. Shame as staff are their main asset but nothing else.

"Blew me away!"

First time in South Coast! Always had family vacations in North Coast. From the moment we checked-in, I could tell this was going to be an enjoyable stay! The room was fantastic - the AC made a huge difference! The kitchen setup was meticulous and very creative. We extended our stay because the staff - all of them - were courteous and very friendly. We had an awesome time at Diani Reef Hotel. You can't beat the experience! I was blown away. I would do this again in a heartbeat!
