"Absolutey amazing place"
One of these places that makes you go 'WOW" a lot! A little hobbit village, with stone lodges hidden amounts huge boulders. The oryx roam through the village at night eating the very green grass. the swimming pool has a view across the desert . the staff were friendly and helpful. the only possible downside was the buffet dinners which could have been better but there was a lot of it!
It is one of the most beautifull and unique view hotel. It is located between huge rocks and the swiiming pool is very beautifull which has a wonderful view over the valley. The buffet is rich. The rooms are very nice and has a unique decoration
"Good and bad"
The setting is beautiful and it is great to be able to walk about freely, it is a bit like "Hobbiton" with little cottages set among huge boulders. There is a lovely swimming pool, the cottages are quaint and comfortable, and they do a short sunset walk to the top of some boulders for yet another magnificent Namibia sunset. It is reasonably close to Fish River canyon which you can drive yourself or go on one of the lodges tours. It has everything going for it to make it an amazing memorable stay apart from the layout and the staff. Unless you are at one of the furthest away cottages everyone walks past just out side which limits privacy and not all guests are considerate of others. When we arrived there was no one in reception, we wandered from room to room looking for someone and when we eventually did they were disinterested to say the least. We asked for information on walks and thinks to do, this request was met with a blank stare and then late that evening after asking again was told all there tours were booked out - they were not interested in giving information unless you were doing it with them and they were getting paid. The evening meal was awful, we stayed two nights and only ate there once, it was an overpriced buffet with the service and standard of food being the worst we had in three weeks in Namibia. Could be great if they improved the service and the staff attitude. We drove ourselves to the canyon which is a one day thing unless you are going to walk in the canyon which is inaccessible from this side, therefore only one night stay required this side of the canyon. Fish River lodge is the preferred accommodation for the canyon, it has prime position, but unfortunately is difficult to get into as it is so popular and booked out far in advance.
"Sound of silence"
It has been a wonderful experience to be at a place where you hear the sound of silence in the night. The huts have been quite nice, but had no minibar for cold water or whatever. The food has been very good as the service was.
My husband and I loved staying at Canyon Lodge as it was an oasis and bird paradise in the dry environment. It is beautifully built into the rocks and has some interesting rooms and features. We were quite far away from the main area, which is what we like. The pool area is also far away and has a peaceful view overlooking the interesting landscape. We loved the food and there was always a wonderful selection. The smoke emanating from the fire in the dining room at night was a bit overwhelming - perhaps the chimney is not functioning correctly. We stayed at Canyon Lodge for 2 nights so that we could visit the Fish River Canyon. We had not done any research on how to get to see it and this is where we think that the Lodge Reception could have done better in explaining that one could do a self-drive into the park, explaining the entrance and fees, the route etc. We were only given options of guided hikes and guided drives which were not very informative or explanatory. It would be nice to have all the information at hand on how to see the canyon with some information and with a choice of self drive/walk and guided tours.
