Over Cañon Lodge

"A natural wonder in the desert"
After a long drive on a dirt road we were impressed by the friendly staff and the lush landscape in the desert. The room was tastefully decorated and the pool was a fabulous refreshment with a wonderful view. A short drive to the Canyon. A MUST SEE!
"Superb hotel design, but reception is suspected of skimming my credit card"
One of the better hotel designs and lay-out of bungalows. Our bungalow number 22 was situated between two giant granite rock boulders. Although compact (small compared to real luxury hotels), the nice design made it a feature stay. Bedroom just over 10 m2 floor space and about 12 m2 at hip-level. Toilet 2 m2 and shower also 2 m2. Terrace 8 m2 with sunset view and a few roaming resident Oryx and many Dassies. Coffee, tea, silent A/C, bottled water and a safe in the hut. Complimentary tea, coffee and cake at the hotel terrace area. The buffet dinners and breakfast are passable, but not fantastic. So far, it can be rated as a 4-star hotel. When checking out, there was a “fault†with the Master Card payment. The receptionist did not show me the amount, but I was required to enter my personal safety PIN-code two times. It took a long while before the payment was cleared. This was one of the very few MC payments I made in Namibia. From my bank, I was informed that two days later a huge amount was attempted to be deducted from my MC card, somewhere from Chinatown in Windhoek. The bank blocked my card immediately. When analysing events, we could only deduct that the skimming took place with the small MC payment at the Canon Hotel. When we raised an alert to the hotel, the email was deleted “without being readâ€; reason more for our suspicion. Thus, the reason why I downgraded this facility with two stars.
"Extraordinary lodge close to Fish River Canyon"
This lodge is totally different from what one has seen before. Built within the rocks, surrounded by just nature with visits of Oryx and Zebras in between, it is a wonderful experience to stay here. Dinner and breakfast is great, the entrance to the Fish River Canyon Park is just 3 km away from the lodge.
"Unique setting for a memorable luxury stay"
Possibly the pick of all the accommodation during our 6-week tour of east and Southern Africa, particularly as far as setting is concerned. There are beautiful stone buildings with chalets set into the rocky hillsides to blend well. Rooms were a bit small but well-appointed with adequate bedding, mosquito nets if needed and air conditioning. Stone construction made it relatively cool inside anyway. There are stone pathways around the site and wild Oryx come to feed on the grass with the rocky mounds also being a haven for Hyrax. We had a bit of a walk to the swimming pool which was excellent for getting the body temperature down (it was mid-October and hot ~35oC during the day and still warmish at night. There was the opportunity to climb up one rocky mound to a sundowner bar. Dinner included served starters (two choices) and desserts (no choice) with a buffet main that had a wide variety of food along with a high class wine selection. During our stay wifi was unavailable.
"Was probably nice back in 1965"
This is a place that was built long ago and will never see an upgrade as it's become a cash cow. The units are small and very dusty. If you smack your bedspread while the light is streaming in you'll find yourself in a cloud. Our room had some water thing gurgling away that kept me up all night and an air conditioner pointed straight at the bed so you couldn't use it without freezing. They're nice in a 1950's sorta way but not a thing about this place (including the rather questionable wallpaper depicting the German colonials) has changed nor is it likely to. Service is typical Namibian 'indifferent' The food caters to the meat-heavy German clientele that represents 99% of the guests. Breakfast is just dreadful - runny scrambled eggs, nasty looking sausages, slimy cheese. We just had some fruit - it was far too nasty. The grounds are beautiful and there are frequent wildlife visitors. That's nice but it does mean you better watch where you step as there's poop everywhere. I could take this or leave it. It's probably as good as it gets around here and the boulders that it's set in to are very attractive
