"Sand & Balloons"

From the outside, the lodges are beautifully designed. The rooms are basic but they are a good size with an indoor shower and some hot water. Be prepared to have everything in the room covered in sand. The only way to keep cool is with all the flaps down which means layers off sand in your bed, etc. The walk to the main lounge can be a long slog in hot sand. Wear covered shoes and a wind-resistant hat. Be sure to climb Big Daddy with a guide who van show you how to "run" down the dune and take the balloon trip. Those 2 activities made the stay worthwhile.

"Worth every penny"

This is definitely an expensive place but if you are going to stay at Sossusvlei and want a special experience, I highly recommend Kulala. The staff are exceptionally nice...shout out to Llywellen, Petronella and Darius. They go out their way to make the stay enjoyable. Rooms are great but no AC so you need to sleep with doors open and fan on but desert is cool at night so not an issue. Food is delicious and sundowner and morning tours were great. Take full board to get your monies worth! Thanks for the birthday song for My daughter and making our stay so memorable ❤️❤️❤️

"Hottest place I remember"

We arrived at the airport in Windhoek (long lines through immigration) and were met by a Wilderness Safari representative after luggage claim. They have a lounge in the airport where we could wait while other guests arrived from other destinations. In our case, it was a long wait but the lounge was comfortable enough with water and WIFI. Since the flight from Windhoek to the lodge involved a light aircraft, there is a weight limit on luggage. The lounge offered lockers where one can store items to be retrieved on the way back. Some guests appeared to be surprised at this, in our case it was pretty clear when we booked the trip. In any case, as we saw from other guests, there is no point in arguing. Your heavy bags are not traveling with you if the plane will be too heavy. After all that, our flight to the lodge was a bumpy one-hour flight, watch your head and remember to drink lots of water. On arrival, we were met at the airstrip and driven to the lodge where we were met with a cold drink and wet towel. Everyone was given a personalized introduction to the facilities and activities. Rooms were comfortable safari tents with mosquito nets, en-suite facilities, and even the option to sleep under the stars (our room was closer to the main camp so that would have felt strange). During the day the place was extremely hot, but there was a (hot) breeze that picked up in the afternoon. At night, the place got chilly so sleeping was comfortable. There was WIFI, but that was not reliable, in any case it’s supposed to be a vacation. Regarding activities, the very early morning drive to the dunes was the highlight. We climbed Big Daddy and it was hot, difficult, sandy and totally worth it. The view from the top of the dune is stunning, the run down the side of the dune to Dead Vlei is real fun and the walk in Dead Vlei is straight out of the very best nature show. Other activities mostly focus on seeing beautiful desert landscape with Oryx as the most likely wildlife, but there are others mostly active at night judging by the footprints. I think a night desert walk might be a good addition to the activities. The sunsets were impressive served with the sundowner snacks and a drink. Dinner was served outside with a view of the watering hole. The service and food were comparable with many other lodges that I have visited in Namibia and Botswana. Overall, I enjoyed the visit but think that three nights may be one night too many given the number of activities on offer.

"A very warm welcome awaits you"

I think your reviewer (Capetonian 123, 8th Jan) is a little harsh. Kulala Lodge is not the most luxurious lodge we stayed in during our Namibia trip but we enjoyed ourselves and were made very welcome. We arrived after 32 hours on the road and were greeted by Christopher, the barman, with ice cold cloths and a ginger shot. Our other hosts for the two night stay were Michael - guide, Petronella - camp manager boss, Yvonne - housekeeper manager, Christopher - barman, and Loide, Patricia and Albertina - waitresses. The lodge is set in its own private reserve, slap bang in the middle of the Namibian desert, with superb views across to the dune sea. Our room was a comfortable semi tented chalet. True there was no air con but if you wrap yourself in a damp towel and lie on the bed with the fan on then it’s fine. We rather liked the three canisters on the dressing table: the first contained insect repellent, the second was labelled Doom and the third had a red hooter on the top (shades of the Deathly Hallows in Harry Potter). Doom is for spraying large insects and killing them instantly apparently while the red hooter is to press if you suddenly find a snake or a scorpion in your room. SWMBO thought it might also be used to raise the alarm if receiving unwanted advances from amorous husbands! The big attraction of Kulala of course is it’s proximity to the dunes at Sossuvlei (reviewed separately)...

"Hot and amazing"

After 10k long drive from the road cross the Namid desert this lodge appears as if in a James Bond movie. It was very hot but then we were in the desert. Our room was well furnished but functional. A hot wind blew and there was no air con, but we were in the desert! Meals were served out on the decking as the sun set, truly memorable. We took a tour to the famous Dunes at Sossusvlei via the lodge's private gate into the national park. A good tour with an excellent guide, Alfred, but rather expensive at over 1000 N$ each. We couldn't use the gate with our own vehicle so this would have meant an extra 60K to reach Sossusvlei. The lodge also failed to tell us that wine was included with the meals. I slept out on the roof of our room on a very comfy mattress for two of our three nights. Worth doing if just for the view of the night sky. Staff were very helpful, friendly and attentive. But it was hot and windy!
