"Lovely hotel with dishonesty problem"
An uncomfortable episode at the start of our stay chilled our excitement about the Victoria Angkor Resort & Spa which is otherwise a beautiful, well-equipped and well-situated resort complex in the centre of Siem Reap. On our first night out, we had already identified a highly rated Cambodian restaurant in the south-eastern part of town. But it was obvious the hotel concierge wanted us to dine somewhere else. He told us our restaurant had recently moved and that we had to be a careful because where we wanted to go was "very far from here". We insisted multiple times, showing him the location both on Google Maps and on the website of the restaurant. But the concierge was not for turning. Instead, he went on to giving the hotel tuk-tuk driver his own instructions in Khmer. And off we went in pitch evening darkness to a place we had not asked to go to, in a city we did not know, in a foreign country where we had arrived just a few hours prior. We begged the driver several times and insisted he was going in the wrong direction but he wouldn't listen either. We eventually commanded him to stop and showed him the restaurant on a map. Again to no avail. The driver instead continued mercilessly toward a destination only known to the driver and the hotel concierge. Once at a full stop outside a Western-looking eatary, we told the driver we would not descend. Instead we pleaded him to take us where we wanted to go. He thankfully conceded and we arrived at our intended restaurant another 10 min drive later. Relieved, shaken and upset, we told the restaurant staff our story. They explained us that restaurant commissions are prevalent in Siem Reap and that we had most probably fallen victim to one. Lonely Planet warns about similar scams. We do believe most staff at the Victoria Angkor Resort & Spa truly wants to help and assist their guests. But this type of disrespect toward hotel guests has nothing to do with hospitality. In our case, it instead had us question the intentions of staff members. This skepticism was further in the reception when we enquired about transportation to the Angkor complex. The smiling receptionist promised us that their USD 18 half-day excursion rate with a hotel tuk-tuk driver reflected that elsewhere in town, and that any other tuk-tuk driver outside the hotel would require the same amount. But then the lower-key hotel we stayed at for our last stay in Siem Reap told us their rate was USD 15 - for a *full* day excursion. It is only to fair that a 5 star hotel like the Victoria, with more overhead, charges a premium for their services. USD 18 is perfectly acceptable compared to European standards. And, ultimately, nobody cares about the seeing the Angkor after traveling half the world to see it. But what's with the dishonesty? Dear hotel management, it boils down to the following: Please do not abduct your guests. And try not to lie to them either.
"Peace and tranquility in Siem Reap"
Try the spa while you are there. Rooms overlooking the pool are quiet and relaxing. So easy to access the town. A must to add is the circus. You will love it here and don't forget to also see the small crocs in the fish pond.
"The best Hotel I’ve visited in Cambodia!"
We were picked up at the AirPort and driven directly to the Hotel. The roms, clealyness and service were excellent. Skimming pool was clean and invited for a visit. Dinner, and espesially breakfast, were excellent!ðŸ‘
"Poor customer service"
Nice hotel within walking distance from night market and Pub street. However, our experience could have been better if they had proper shades/black out in the room. Light entre to the blinds so we where always up at 6 am in the morning during our stay. Despite complaining at the front desk a couple of times they didn't offer any solution.
