Over Raffles Hotel Le Royal

"Beautiful property "
You will not find a more elegant hotel in the capital of Cambodia. Within walking distance of great sights, dining, nightlife, and the river. I am staying in a single room with a king bed. The room has all the amenities of a 4-5 star hotel. I challenge you to find a staff at any other hotel that strives to takeoff your every need. Coming out of Hanoi I had left over Dong. The front desk couldn't exchange it. Yet the front desk clerk told me he would do it the following morning on his own, and he did. Your room will be prepared with care and nothing with ever be out of place. Always attention to detail from arrival till departure. This hotel has shopping and a full bar both inside and pool service, Full care for your laundry, turndown service, and a French Colonial setting. You may ask why 4 out of 5? The room bathrooms are substandard for a hotel of this class.
"Pleasant hotel with history, not a good Business choice"
The Raffles is a beautifully looking property with a atmosphere and a pretty garden. The two pools are also very inviting. We were a bit disappointed having to pay USD20/night extra in order to enjoy a more tranquil room to the inside with a view over the pool. The room initially offered to us was facing right over the back of the garden and the street; not a place to spend a pleasant time on the balcony on. The room itself was of decent size with a nice bed. For a party of two, we found the closet space to be way too small. The bathroom is pretty with a nice corner shower with decent water pressure and stable temperature. The amenities are very nice but in order for the hotel to be a business hotel, the wi-fi would have to be significantly improved. Yes, there is a faster internet available but in this day and age few businesses can be convinced to pay premium hotel rates and then again be charged USD25 (!!!) per day to upgrade their internet. This is a thing of the past, dear Raffles. We had lunch at the pool side one day and the quality of the food was good. We also enjoyed our breakfasts at the hotel and the staff in the restaurant were amazing; they recognized our beverage choices after one day. Well done!
"Stepping back in time"
I have now stayed at Raffles Hotel Le Royal about four times over the past three years and every time it was a pleasure. The staff is attentive, the ambiance relaxing, and the location perfect for me as it is near the center of town. It is lightly renovated old hotel with furniture befitting of the era when it was built. If you are looking for a modern hotel go elsewhere but if you like a bit of retro in your life you will love it.
"Old world charm, beautiful classic hotel"
I stayed here for two nights with my brother on vacation straight from a 4 night stay in Park Hyatt Siem Reap (which I loved). First impressions, the property was a very attractive classic colonial style, almost felt like you were stepping back in time. The original hotel was built in 1929 (the main building was, as there are four) and it's maintained in that style, with exceptional service. The staff are dressed impeccably in the chic, smart cream raffles style suits with ties, which is really in keeping with the look and style of the hotel. Check in was quick and efficient and they upgraded our room with a pool facing view along with a small balcony. The room was beautiful with wooden floors, sleigh beds and duck egg blue shutters with roll top bath tubs, wooden fans, even the brass key and fob, everything makes you think it's original from the 1930s, bar the LCD TV :) I saw from the balcony that they had a special outdoor cinema in the courtyard playing black n white movies some evenings, that was pretty unique and pleasant. All staff speak excellent English and you really feel well looked after. Every area in the hotel, the bar, the lobby, the fine dining restaurant are all so well designed it's great for those who appreciate Art Deco design. We had breakfast and thought it was fairly steep at 28 usd per head , and was Rather disappointing Ana lackluster, but I think perhaps we were too spoilt in the Park Hyatt. I prefer a la carte over buffet. The coffee wasn't hot enough or that great and didn't taste like a fresh brew. I had gluten allergy and they made me special pancakes which were edible nothing great, and also they had gluten free bread (not the best) and muffins the only thing I liked. Little things like no mango at fruit, and orange juice didn't taste fresh. My brother ordered eggs Benedict and it came with one lonely egg on a very small muffin, very odd to serve just One! I'm just using the last stay at Park Hyatt, Siem Reap as a reference point and honestly they weren't no where near the same level food wise, however, service was efficient and of a decent standard. Overall breakfast experience was OK at best, just not what I would have expected for this hotel . The pool area is so inviting with mature trees all around and a lovely patio area surrounding it, really quite stunning so be sure to make time to appreciate it and relax or have lunch by the pool. However, in comparison to the Park Hyatt we just came from, pool side assistance was more limited although I saw lots of staff around not doing much, they could have been put to use by bringing you water or pool snacks. Although the pool area was beautiful these touches would have added to the experience. I'm sure this is the best 5* hotel in Phnom Penh and it certainly did feel like it, particularly due to the property itself and the excellent service. I just thought for a Raffles branded hotel I expected just that little bit extra.....
