"Found heaven in Ubud"
If I meet my maker tomorrow I know I have been to heaven for 3 nights whilst on earth and shared it with some monkeys (and the wife!) Back to nature with style - No TV;s in room (Hoorah); Beautifully designed rooms in a simple but classy finish All staff professional and friendly (special shout to Debbie - as she checked us in and we saw her daily and noted her name), even providing use of a spare apartment after checking out as we went on a BOBs of Bali Bike tour (separate entry) and came back rather dishevelled prior to our move to the Conrad Bali in Nusa Dua. Monkeys at breakfast and dawn even stole ice from my wife's drink around the pool (immediately replaced by the staff) The food - Ala Carte menu - superb with the Tasting Menu being a magnate to return (this was included in our 3 night package) Ate one night in the Cabana Club more relaxed but allowed us a desert from the main restaurant without complaint. We did;t get time to take the free shuttle into Ubud but having witnessed it on transport day will certainly use it on our return and taxi back if we wanted to eat out for a change (believe me - we are already planning when) Thank you to all at Alila - you made us feel so welcome and relaxed - nothing was too much trouble and the best insect spray we have ever used - we bought some at the spa on leaving and we never got bit the whole time we were in Bali PS _ nearly forgot - the SPA full body massage, facial etc - so relaxing and set in a superb classy venue. Now can I persuade my wife to replace South African Safari with a return to Bali next year?
"Beautiful hotel but not perfect"
There are many great things about this hotel. The infinity pool is beautiful and the views are amazing. The hotel is small enough to never feel crowded even when at full occupancy, and big enough to have all the facilities. The staff are very friendly and try really hard to make you feel welcome and comfortable. The breakfast is excellent. It's a very peaceful and relaxing environment - really a special place. The reasons that I'm not giving it five stars are mostly outside the control of the hotel. The location is about 15 minute drive outside Ubud and transportation is not easy in Bali - either you are using the hotel's cars which are overpriced or you are trying to find a reliable, safe, etc. driver from outside (not easy). So the default option is just to stay in the resort all the time, which means you will be eating in the restaurants, which are good but can lack consistency - and are not cheap either. Even more so, the spa is very nice but very overpriced - there are many spas in the Ubud area which are just as good but less than half the price. It feels like they are relying on your interia to stay in the hotel. The rooms are nice but can feel old (the hotel is over 15 years old) and you will spend a lot of time being bitten by mosquitos, especially in the evening. The nights can be very noisy due to the chirping creatures all around (I needed ear plugs to sleep properly) - of course some of this is unavoidable when you are in the middle of a forest but it does detract from the relaxing nature of the overall experience. Apart from the pool, there isn't a huge amount to do at the hotel, there are some activities but nothing that will take too much time, so you will have to go outside and explore Ubud, which can be over-crowded with tourists at peak times. In summary, very good but needs more cowbell.
What a beautiful jungle paradise Alila Ubud is! You feel like you are far from everything - in a very good way and in fact only 20 minute drive from Ubud centre. Everything here is lush. The standard rooms are simple but come with a little patio to enjoy the jungle view from and an amazing outside bathroom that overlooks a little zen garden. I loved the fact that you are surrounded by frogs, geckos and cicadas but one shouldn't mind that something alive will occasionally hop your way. During tea time by the pool the monkeys come which is a real highlight - just hold on to your snack! The pool is a class of its own with the most amazing views over the jungle. We loved the little restaurant - super modern but still very cozy. All in all, the perfect hotel stay surrounded by nature!
"Excellent hotel with a few minor issues"
We stayed here as part of a trip to Indonesia. Hotel staff are all incredibly helpful and attentive. The breakfast in particular was great - a la carte is the way to go! - and there was an included tasting menu with our stay, which was great too. The location is spectacular - nestled in amongst the forests north of Ubud - and there is a wonderful view down into the river valley and across the jungles. This does attract its share of wildlife - particularly cicadas and mosquitoes - but the safeguards put in place by the hotel made sure it wasn't a problem. There were a few issues - the bed was very soft (and was actually two single beds shunted together!) which caused issues with sleeping, and the location - while beautiful - was so far away from Ubud that you were somewhat bound to the hotel for meals (there is a free shuttle service but last one back from the town is at 3pm)
The hotel and grounds are beautiful, if you are looking for a quiet relaxing stay away from it all then this is for you. There is not much to do other than lie next to the pool or walk on the approach road to the hotel (about 1km). My wife and I organised a bicycle trip and white water rafting to break up the stay, I would not stay longer than three full days. A day at the pool, a day in Ubud and a day doing activities in the mountains i.e. rafting.
