Over Azania Bungalows

"Loved this Place!"
Small secluded bungalows with beautiful grounds and pool. The rooms were clean and adequate. The monkeys & a rooster woke us up every morning which added to the ambiance. Breakfast was included with several choices(pancakes, bacon & eggs, omelet) along with a fresh fruit salad, toast, jam, juice and coffee. Drinks were served with a smile beside the deserted pool. Resort is a 10 minute walk or $4 cab ride to town. All staff were courteous and accommodating. Highly recommend this resort.
The thatched roofs and the jungle ambience did not make up for no phone, no coffee non-functional shower, poor communication...closed the restaurant with no warning...and had to rent a bike from them to go into town to eat..mosquito netting did not prevent some serious bites, whatever bit me...and I had bites that looked very much like bed bug bites. Service is indifferent and you have to initiate contact. Some of the staff were helpful but appeared overworked. Don't go.
"Jungle Paradise close to the beach!"
We absolutely loved staying at Azania Bungalows! The thatched roof bungalows were homey, spacious and clean. The rooms stayed cool with screened windows on three sides and two ceiling fans. The grounds and pool were beautiful, with a nice restaurant overlooking the pool and grounds. The gals working at the reception desk were very nice and extremely helpful. There were a few short comings, which is why I wouldn't give it 5 starts. The rooms are extremely dark even in the day time. They only have a few lamps which only illuminate a little....remember to bring a flashlight! The toilets don't flush well as there is very little water pressure. The shower is whatever temperature the elevated water tanks are...in other words just barely luke warm! The "sunken step-down" shower in the bathroom is very dangerous. I fell down in it twice...and got a huge bruise on my thigh. They didn't extend the mosquito screens around the bathroom benches, so mosquitoes can still find their way in through the bathroom. The towels are the consistency of sandpaper...I don't think they could buy cheaper ones if they tried! However, I found Azania bungalows very unique and charming in spite of the shortcomings. Because there are only 9 of them, Azania is very quiet, relaxing and romantic just across the road from Cocles Beach. Half of the time my husband and I had the pool and the restaurant to ourselves. They have bikes to rents if you are willing to risk your life riding on a busy, narrow road with no paved shoulder.
We stayed two nights here. Bungalow was sweet, all wooden inside, shower etc, loved the night time sounds of the insects, wildlife running around outside your door, what more do you want! Breakfast was good, real friendly staff, nice venue for meals over looking the pool. Close enough to town to walk but take a torch of its dark.
"Fantastic Jungle Setting, Close to the Beach "
We knew we were on to a winner when the driver of the mini bus bringing us from San Jose gave a double thumbs up for where we were staying (our fellow travellers got no such acknowledgement for their destinations!). Our driver was right. Azania is in a truly beautiful jungle setting - fantastic flora and fauna - picture a lovingly maintained Jurassic Park! Our room was a wooden raised bungalow (off the ground presumably because of the rain (it’s not called the rain forest for nothing) and critters). It had a super comfortable double bed (+ two single beds) and a bathroom with shower. There is hot water (the reviewers who said there isn’t are mistaken), but you need to let it run for a minute). The WiFi is free, with a reasonable signal in all areas. The pool area is lovely, with a jacuzzi. The water is refreshingly freezing! Breakfast is basic, but enjoyable - bacon and eggs, fresh fruit, toast, fruit juice and unlimited coffee. The bikes are fun and cheap. It’s definitely worth cycling the three miles or so to Punta Uva. It’s a 20/30 minute walk into the town centre (party central), but the road is reasonably lit and a track runs beside it, so you are safe from the traffic. And it is 50 metres from the beach.
