Over Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa

"A pleasant experience - with some small dissapointments"
Recommended and booked through our travel agent 9 (nine!) month prior to arrival, we arrived at this property after spending two nights and three days on the Rovos Rail trip from Capetown, where we had occupied one of their suites. I will admit that we were a bit spoiled by this experience, and looking forward in anticipation to the reserved 'Grand Chateau Suite'. Checking in at approx. 1.45 p.m., these formalities were taken care of by a pleasant receptionist lady, who also informed us that the room was already available. We strolled through the well kept hotel grounds to the building where our suite was situated. Upon arrival, we found that the accommodation was really a comfortable but rather dark ROOM, looking out towards the back of the building and into the neighbouring back yard, without any view whatsoever. Could it be that group or convention clients are assigned to better rooms in comparison to individual clients? The furnishing consisted of a big canopy bed with two bedside tables, a sofa and an easy chair, a large desk with an intelligent array of international plugs, a TV and minibar and a side table with coffee/tea machine. The attached bathroom was large, with a bathtub and walk-in shower, double water basins and toilet (unfortunately) NOT separate. Attached was a walk-in cupboard with plenty of hanging space but unsufficient flat storing place (drawers, tablets). A suite, in our opinion, would have comprised a separate sitting room area. - We undertook a short stroll through the well kept grounds of the hotel, then finished unpacking and ordered tea with sandwiches. At 6.45 p.m. we removed the 'Do not disturb' sign from the door and took the hotel shuttle which drove us to the restaurant 'The Butcher Shop' recommended by the receptionist lady. A very good recommendation! When returning to the hotel at approx. 11.15 p.m. we where somewhat surprised to find that neither had the turn-down service been done nor had the room service removed the tray. We called the night staff who removed the tray with stale food and undertook a quick turn-down service. In our opinion, hotels of similar standard are expected to execute a turn-down service if clients leave their room before 7 p.m. - Breakfast the next morning was pleasant, buffet style. Service rather slow and hesitating, although the dining room was not even half full. - A light lunch on the terrace that day was pleasant; we were particularly impressed by the immediate attention of the head waiter (or assistand manager?) as soon as we sat down. - In general we were impressed by the lovely layout of the hotel in various buildings, ensuring privacy and calm. The staff at the front desk have been extremely efficient and helpfull with restaurant recommendations and organizing a memorable half day tour of Johannesburg with an excellent guide. We were also impressed by the General Manager's personal interest and helpfull reaction when asked for some information. - We did not, during our entire stay, manage to find out how to use the room light switches correctly. And when the air condition is switched on, both parts of the bath room door will continue to open despite all efforts to keep them closed.
"Beautiful Hotel Rooms"
We had a good experience at the Fairlawns. The hotel rooms were beauiful and well appointed. The staff was service oriented and the breakfast buffet yummy. I would recommend when overnighting to and from the bush and other parts of Africa.
"Birthday Spoil for my Girlfriend"
I treated my girlfriend to the Sunset package for her birthday. the stay and the entire experience was out of this world. Thank you for treating her and me so well. We are definitely return customers. The room, the food, the spa, the facilities were simply amazing and out of this world. Thank you again.
Awesome experience thank you. We loved the stay and the service was amazing. Great rooms and the decor amazing. Spa was very nice, really good service and the staff great too. Food was amamzing, especially the breakfast!
We stayed at the Fairlawns for two nights and were wow-fully impressed! The hotel is in an upscale residential area of Sandton, and is gate-guarded, safe, and very quiet. You feel like you are in a Mediterranean mansion rather than being in a hotel in Johannesburg! The guest rooms are large and individually decorated. We were traveling as a group, so saw several different rooms, each themed differently and exquisitely. Our room was a beach-type retreat modern, while others were African or Mediterranean themed, and downright opulent! Even the baths in each room had a different design, but all had a huge soaking tub separate from the shower. The spacious main building has the look and feel of a private mansion, and the entranceway is African-themed in decor with artwork everywhere. The lobby and restaurant are in different buildings, with the huge outdoor pool located behind these. We had both our breakfasts at the hotel, as well as the first night's dinner. Everything was wonderful as you would expect at a boutique hotel of this caliber. The bar area was under renovation, but you could get drinks on the terrace by the restaurant overlooking the pool. The public indoor sitting area and restaurant were elegantly decorated and had a beautiful piano in each; the one in the restaurant being a exceptionally well kept antique. The staff is terrific, and couldn't do enough to make our visit the best. While there are no restaurants in walking distance due to the residential neighborhood, the Concierge will gladly offer recommendations for restaurants, and the hotel shuttle will take you and pick you up as well. We went to one of their recommendations on our last night, The Chophouse Grille, and it was excellent, and a short drive to the lively Mandela Square area. On another afternoon trip, some in our group wanted to go shopping for some local crafts, and the manager actually accommodated our group of five for the shopping trip! Thank you Beverly for pointing out the beautiful Batik African art wall hanging which we bought and brought home - truly a nice remembrance of our stay. We had an absolutely outstanding stay! Thanks to all!
