"Great retreat! "

   28-01-2017
We booked the Monsoon Deluxe and was upgraded to the Beach Villa for the last night. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. Considering, we stayed in two different types of rooms, we had the experience of both the nature and beach environments. Friendly staff (welcome drink) and good service. Had an enjoyable breakfast at the Bali Tower Resto which has a real great view of the West National Park. Also, we went for a nice bike ride around the park as well as horse-back riding! What a stay! Hope to be back soon!

"worth the trip"

   18-01-2017
The room was nice - we were in a set of rooms with a pool in the middle - Little safari type vans took you form one part of the resort to another - kind of an added bit of fun, especially if you have kids as you can sit 'up top' and see a monkey or two - staff very friendly and helpful. Expensive as you would expect this type of resort to be but - definately worh it.

"Very nice resort in nature"

   17-01-2017
This is a high quality resort that keeps the nature aspect well. We stayed in a beach front villa that felt very private. It was a nice room with an amazing view. As described on the website, the bathroom is outside and while partially covered it is a bit rustic. The staff speaks English well & each person is courteous and helpful. They definitely aim to please! The food is excellent. The view from the Bali tower is breath taking, especially at sunset!! We saw Monkeys and Deer roaming around freely. They keep away from humans but are still very close. Horseback riding area is very nice and the Snorkeling trip was great. Very enjoyable few days.

"3.5 star for nice, but slightly disappointing experience"

   15-01-2017
I had higher expectations given the reviews on TripAdvisor and couldn't bring myself to give it 4 stars given our experience. I booked it mainly for the snorkeling, as well as the various activities offered on site. Although the price point doesn't seem too bad, considering what you can get in Bali for the money and that you have to pay extra for all the different services (entering the park, renting kayaks, massage, snorkeling, lunch/dinner, etc.), it's not as affordable as other places. Keep in mind, this hotel is quite far from DPS, so unless you are spending more than a week in Bali (we only had 5 nights and stayed 3 nights here), the drive (took us close to 7 hours, granted our driver got lost for ~ 1 hour) may take up a lot of your precious vacation time. We arrived close to midnight, but luckily concierge is available 24 -7. We were able to check in (along with a refreshing spring roll and ginger tea) and get carted to our Monsoon lodge room quickly. The room was spacious and cool, with king sized bed, sitting area, small TV, and bathroom with shower over tub. The shower pressure was somewhat weak and the height of the shower was low and made it slightly uncomfortable to use. The furnishings were somewhat spartan, though, and not as clean (cobwebs behind desk). Little things seemed like they were worn out that needed to be fixed or upgraded (shelf of fridge kept slipping and the drinks - which looked like they have been in there for over a year, would fall out, toilette kept leaking, door jam was crooked). The wifi was pretty good. The AC acted up and wasn't blowing out cold air, but they came and fixed it promptly. The first main issue was location (not just how far from DPS). In order to get to and from the Monsoon Lodge to any of the activities (mostly down at the beach), as well as the restaurants (Bali tower or Beach), you likely need to take the open air 2nd decker van (although you can bike on the rocky dirt path or walk, but the tower is probably a 5-10 minute walk, whereas the beach is likely 20-30 minutes). The van takes about 15-20 minutes to get to and from the beach, and sometimes you have to wait if it's not outside. Staying in a villa down at the beach would make a big difference, but you may be subject to insects/bugs from the outdoor bathroom (which was what kept me from booking a beach villa room). This wouldn't have been a big deal, but if you want to go back to your room in between meals and activities, making that trek several times a day takes awhile. The breakfast starts at 7AM and ends promptly at 10:30AM, so make sure you get there in time to order. The selection was great, with pastries, fruit, yogurt, granola, egg dishes, pancake, french toast, fruit juice, coffee. You can pretty much order anything. The lunch and dinner hours are good, with service ending at 11pm. Happy hour is 4:30- 6:30 and they serve the drinks with tasty mixed nuts. We were able to book a 90 minute couple's massage, which was definitely worth it. The gazebo is outside and they bathe your feet, give you tea and then you enjoy the side by side massage while looking in a mirror at the water/island views. Make sure to book the massage ahead of time though, as they don't have that many masseuse on site and try to end services by 6pm. We went snorkeling twice. They generally go at 9AM, although depending on who else is going, you can make it earlier or later (we went at 7:30AM another day). It's definitely worth going to Palau Menjangan. It was probably the best snorkeling I've done. The visibility was great, many different colorful coral and fish (as well as eel, sting ray, etc.). You can stop for lunch or continue to snorkel. They provide a snack box for 100K extra if you want, or you can decline it (making snorkeling 700K instead). The 2nd issue were the dinners. First of all, given the location, there are only 2 choices of restaurants unless you go out of the resort, but the next town over is ~ 40 minutes away. The first night we ate at the Beach restaurant (as they stated the food at the Tower was more basic). There was a large selection, although the special (chicken) and curry that we had seemed overcooked and under spiced. We live in San Francisco and are spoiled with multicultural food, so perhaps our expectations are higher. We booked the private BBQ the next night, which had a nice setting in a private gazebo. It was quite warm, but they were able to bring over a fan. The issue started when they decided to put all the food (satay, ribs, pork, chicken and fish wrapped in banana leaf, etc.) on the BBQ at once. I was under the impression that the food would be cooked to order, but when they started putting it all on the plate, leaving the rest that we couldn't fit on the plate on the grill, it was a bad sign. So while we were eating the already somewhat overcooked food on our plate, which some were already getting cold since we couldn't eat fast enough, the food on the grill was getting even more overcooked, and actually burned. And the rice that was on a pan over fire to keep warm was also getting fried and burnt. We ended up eating less than half of all the food, as the rest was inedible. Michael, the operations manager, was very understanding and apologetic about the situation and did not charge us for the dinner, but I do think that the care and understanding in preparing the food is an issue that they need to address. Pros: great snorkeling, couples massage, nice breakfast with plenty of selection, good service Cons: rooms need upgrading, food preparation, location- both from DPS but also within the resort, limited choices of restaurant/activities based on what the hotel provides

"Retreat Lifestyle Hotel"

   09-01-2017
This was our 3rd hotel during our end year vacation in Bali. What we expected was accurate. We loved all the scenery, experience, and hospitality. You can watched group of deers in the morning right in front of your beach front room. The room itself was clean. Ignore some insects (well, you stayed in the middle of jungle) but hotel provided insect repellent. Overall, It was an amazing experience.
