Over Mahamaya

"The best in GIli Meno"

We were very glad that we didn't stay on GIli T as it is VERY busy compared to Gili Meno. We used Blue Water Express for boats - they are a very well organised outfit and I highly recommend them. We also booked, via email to the hotel, a private boat transfer from Gili T - this was well worth it as you are picked up as soon as the boat arrives and your baggage is unloaded, and then after a 5 minute speedboat journey, dropped off adjacent to the hotel. You will need to pack flip flops or beach shoes in your hand luggage though - there is a lot of broken coral that has washed up on the beaches. We stayed at Mahamaya in August for 7 nights and had glorious sunshine for 6.5 days. WEAR SUNSCREEN - I burnt my shoulders quite badly during an overcast bike ride (you can hire these FOC from the hotel). It takes around an hour, although the route isn't entirely navigable by two wheels as the deep sand is tricky on a bike, even the ones with thicker tyres. The room we had was fairly basic, but functional and certainly comfortable. It would however be a very good idea to improve the insulation and door/window seals in the rooms. This would allow the cool air from the AC to stay inside, thereby saving on electricity. Speaking of which, there were one or two power cuts during our stay, but this did not cause a problem at all. The pools are very nice; perhaps one or two more sunbeds and parasols would be good though. The restaurant is excellent - all of the food we had was very good, albeit quite expensive given what you can have elsewhere on the island. Most of the cocktails were good, and happy hour was very enjoyable (3 for 2, and you can accrue the free ones on the day!) Book a table well in advance though - no later than breakfast, and ask for those at the front of the beach as they have the best views. People from other places on the island come here for dinner too, such is the reputation. If you fancy a change from the hotel restaurant, there are plenty of other places to eat not far away at all - what look like BBQs on the side of the sandy track were exceptionally fresh and very delicious! We went to Adeng Adeng a couple of times - good food, drink (Bintang is the local beer) and very peaceful. The sunsets are lovely when viewed from Mahamaya; a few people from other parts of the island would often stop briefly to see the view. Worth mentioning that this was not off-putting by any means. The hotel is directly opposite where the best snorkeling is on the island; just watch out for irresponsible snorkelers and the odd slightly mad boat driver. The diving was pretty good too; not as good as the Maldives, but still very enjoyable. I used the closest Dive Centre, Divine Divers, which is literally 200m away, if that. If you are a novice, be advised that the current at Shark Point (small reef sharks if you're lucky) can be VERY strong. All of the guys and girls at Divine Divers were excellent; Olivia, who is Swiss, probably speaks better English than I do too - symbiosis; what a word to just casually use! The hotel is very eco-oriented and don't offer straws - this is a good thing as they usually end up in the ocean, then inside the stomachs of the turtles etc, which is just wrong and must be agonising for the animals. They also don't use plastic bottles either as plastic rubbish is a big problem in Indonesia. The do issue metal water bottles that you can refill from the water cooler in your room. The staff were all very good; I wish I could remember the names of those who looked after us; they did a great job. Bugs and critters were not an issue during our stay, although a small gecko got into the bathroom and very briefly jumped onto my girlfriend on its way out! I laughed so hard!!! I had my laundry done via the hotel towards the end of our stay as we were heading on to Singapore. There's no need for the express service as mine came back within 36 hours. All in all, a great hotel - definitely the best on Gili Meno. Top tip - when a local salesman/woman asks you which hotel you're staying at, don't say Mahamaya - say one of the cheap ones, otherwise the price of everything goes up!

"Fantastic place,great food and staff."

We celebrated my girlfriends birthday & over two year anevesery. The staff was great all off the staff sung the birthday song for my girlfriend. The food was great. The staff mayd our evening perfect. I will hily recomend Mahamaya.

"Romantic Dinner @ Mahamaya Gili Meno"

We booked a romantic dinner at the Mahamaya restaurant during our honeymoon and we loved every minute of it. The team decorated a beautiful spot on the beach with fresh flowers and as soon as the sun set, candles were lit and made this dinner truly 'very romantic'. Food was very good and at the end Hamdi, the F&B Manager who was our host, came to play some live gitar music. We loved this experience and strongly recommend it for the romantic souls looking to spend an exquisite night on Gili Meno.

"Very Relaxing "

We stayed in Mahamaya for 4 nights at the end of our 3-week trip through Sumatra and Bali. It was the perfect spot to spend a couple of days just relaxing and enjoying the sun and beach! Outstanding was the delicious food and exceptionally friendly and happy staff that always succeeded to provide an amazing service and made you feel sincerely welcome. The breakfast was one of the best we’ve had during our entire stay in Indonesia. Fresh fruits, good coffee, fresh tropical juices, pancakes, eggs, bread, warm dishes etc. All in all we can highly recommend the resort for having a relaxed time and delicious food.

"Beautiful Beach Front Villa"

We stayed here for 4 nights as part of our 2 week honeymoon and we had a fantastic time. We had to go to Gili T first and get a speed boat from there to Gili Meno and we were grateful when we got to Gili Meno that it was much quieter and less touristy than Gili T was. We departed the boat and were immediately met by the staff at the Mahamaya who grabbed all of our luggage for us. They were aware that it was our honeymoon so when we got to our room there was a cake with 'happy honeymoon' written on the plate, two complimentary beers and the bed was decorated. Thought this was a nice touch. You literally step out of the villa onto the sand which is amazing. We were really glad we had chosen a beach front villa. The pool rooms are nice but not as private. Quite a few options for breakfast but no menu. It was either pancakes/ waffles/ omelette or a cooked breakfast with a continental bar to make toast, cereal and there was fruit. Staff were really friendly and happy to help with anything you needed. Lovely outdoor shower which we really liked. In your bathroom there is a water dispenser and you are provided with 2 metal drink canisters so fill up your own water. This was so helpful and as an island they are trying not to use plastic as it is difficult for them to get rid of which is why they don't provide you with bottled water. Really liked the canisters and took them everywhere with us. The hotel provides equipment such as bikes, snorkels and flippers. We had brought our own snorkels with us but did hire the bikes and flippers. One thing I really would suggest if you are planning on going in the sea a lot is some sea shoes/ beach shoes. The ones you can wear in the sea. The beach is mainly made of coral and it can be really painful on the bottoms of your feet! There are other areas of the beach further down where it is more sandy but right outside the hotel there is a lot of coral under foot. Beautiful snorkelling right outside the hotel though and we saw turtles every day we went snorkelling! We ate in the restaurant a couple of times and all the food we had was lovely. May seem like a small menu but the evening menu changes each night, some things remain each night but some things are swapped out for something different which I liked. If you are looking for somewhere really relaxing, laid back and beautiful I would highly recommend this hotel and this island.
