"Impressive hotel, perhaps not a place for everyone..."

In short: the hotel itself is a pretty cool building, with generally friendly staff (except as mentioned below) and good sized rooms. For us though, it just felt too restrictive in terms of what you can and can't do; perhaps the country is better suited to people other than us. In more detail: Rooms: We stayed in a standard grand room. V good size, bathroom nice. Not sparkling new but nothing wrong with it. There was some noise from building work next door and you could sometimes hear music from the ballroom downstairs but it wasn't too bad; avoid the west side of the Seeb wing if you want complete quiet. Food: breakfast was pretty good; a variety of fruits, cooked breakfast (beef bacon not pork), egg bar, cold meats and cheese etc. We didn't eat in the hotel much, the Marjan beach bar served tasty and generous portions of SE Asian food which just about justified the price charged. If you want something different try the Candle Cafe next to the hotel which does basic local meals with shisha. Pool: good selection of sun beds (even if it gets busier at weekends) and a nice layout with the lazy river. Main issue we found was the pool being surrounded by the hotel on three sides which means there's only a few beds that got sun for most of the day. Beach: the beach is right outside the hotel just after a nice garden area with sunbeds. It's a public beach but generally not that busy (certainly outside of evenings and weekends) which makes it feel slightly wild and a bit scary to go in the water (there are no lifeguards). Location: it is a good central location for the sights of Muscat, but the immediate area around it is pretty quiet. There is a good if expensive Iranian (Shabestan) outside, a pretty ropey Irish pub (no draft beer when I went in and expensive) but not much outside. Worth getting a car as there are some good places not too far away like the Kargeen cafe and also D'Arcy's cafe near the Intercontinental. Entertainment/alcohol: The Copacabana nightclub has been recently closed apparently. That leaves the complex just inside the hotel gate, which has an OK pub/sports bar on the ground floor (it has happy hour every night until 10pm which makes the drinks just about reasonably priced) and a nightclub of sorts on the first floor (we went once on a Thursday night; it was a pretty strange place). Alcohol is served throughout the hotel, 3.5 OMR for a bottle or 4 OMR for a pint. If you want cheaper booze, take advantage of the duty free restaurant at the airport (you can't buy it in any shops as a tourist and not many restaurants are licenced). Other: bear in mind the rules here - there is a sign up in reception saying you have to cover your knees in the lobby. Bikinis/swimwear are fine by the pool and on the beach (provided you don't go too far from the hotel), although we felt uncomfortable when the beach was busier and everyone else is covered from head to toe in black or white. One thing we really didn't like was the "enforcer" who seemed to be standing by the pool in a black suit. I was talking closely to my wife (very close but no more than that), and he comes up loudly and says that sort of thing isn't allowed here. He said it in a loud and rude way, almost as if he was trying to embarass us in front of the other guests and it was a pretty unpleasant episode. If we really were doing something wrong, surely the right way to go about it would be to have a quiet polite word with us. Also, worth noting that Skype and other voice over internet services are banned in the country.

"A beautiful business hotel"

We, me and my wife, have just returned from an eleven nights stay at Grand Hyatt as we arrived early on the new year. We have stayed at almost every top hotel in Muscat and were thrilled to find out if this hotel is "hot or not" as the reviewers have been very split in their opinions. The building in itself is very impressive. Everything from the lobby to the restaurants, rooms and elevators are luxurious and decorated in every detail. When the hotel was built, it must have been spectacular for its time. Well, a hotel isn't only about its shell but also what you fill it with. We booked a Grand Executive suit as we read that it was an advantage to have access to the Club Lounge. We very early asked for the one facing the sea. We knew they only have four and the others face the city or even worse. We unfortunately did not get the one we requested. Room 581 have a poor view, but instead evening sun. The suite is very impres-sive with its 140 sqm, and since we had some work to do, it suited us to have good working space. The Grand Club Lounge is a real treasure. Free drinks and food in the evening and a nice breakfast in the morning. The quality of food (good variation) and drinks is splendid and the establishment is very well run by Ms Melchora, assisted by her skilled colleagues Je-nalyn and Jhennie. Ms Melchora gives the impression of being ready for greater tasks in the hotel operation as she is a real talent. Some comments: The level of service over all is good without standing out. No negligence or rudness what so ever, but not very proactive either. The cleaning is very well performed. Still they had an annoying habit of always wanting to service the room when we were in the room instead of time when we were away. Abdulla would always show up the minute we got back from the beach. Maybe only bad luck. The beach is not very inviting and we didn’t see many people from the hotel swimming in the sea. The water is rather turbid and the beach has no sunbeds or space for leisure. Most people consequently stay by the pool. The pool area is ok and enough for most people, but nothing extra. The restaurants have a high standard of the food. Our favorite is the Italian restaurant Tuscanny that makes Italian food of super quality. A real risotto heaven. The Indonesian restaurant Marjan has also found the flavours in a good way, and also serves bistro food like burgers and salads in the daytime. We were a bit disappointed that the Safari Grill restaurant only could offer a set menu. For persons not very hungry it would be an ad-vantage to order from a la carte instead. Prices are high, but then they are everywhere in Oman unless you eat at local restaurants. Noting odd about Grand Hyatt specifically. We very much liked the treatments and Gym/Sauna department. Spacious and well equipped. The guests are, except for during the holiday period, rather businesspeople than tourists and as much as we liked the hotel we felt a bit misplaced in staying eleven nights as tourists at a business hotel. Families and beach lovers should probably choose another hotel, like Shangri-la. All in all a nice and relaxing stay at a beautiful hotel.

"Good Facility with nice beach access"

Huge 5-Star hotel with a few restaurant within the compound. Large room and some facing the pool with views of the beach/sea. Balcony of the room has little privacy and you may want to reconsider sunbathing at the balcony, and save that for the pool proper. Be sure to ask for non-smoking room if you do not want the stale smoke smell. easy access to the beach and provide a great stroll along which you can walk/run until the other end of Love Street/Crowne Plaza which is about 5.5km from this hotel. Sea is safe to swim, but as with everything, do so with safety in mind. No lifeguards on duty at the beach.

"Amazing visit as usual"

It was an amazing stay at Grand Hyatt Muscat. The services provided by the staff work in this hotel were top notch. I would like to mention some of your staff for their excellent service. The person who took my check in (I don't remember your name however you were an amazing person ever) and hytham was fantastic throughout my stay. The people work at the telephone-operator + room service did a great job for following up all my needs during my stay. I could feel the smile on their face while speaking over the phone. I would like to mention housekeeping team who were eagerly waiting for the best service they could do. Chef Mohammed who always give us the best masala omelet during our breakfast. My family always says that you have an amazing smile on your face. And two managers work in breakfast area Ms. Florea (I am sorry I cannot recollect your name) and one gentleman were outstanding. The pool boy was very polite. I simply amazed by your team. Keep up the good work that you have done and keep serving your guest with that smile. Thank you so much.

"Flamboyant and fiery"

The Grand Hyatt easily has the most flamboyant character in Muscat ... the cavernous lobby in almost self-mocking Turkish middle eastern style ... the fiery flames in the gas fired chalices ... the dark African vibes in the Safari club. Both the adventurous as well as the most well behaved luxury traveller can feel at ease here. Food and beverage also above average although not of the very very highest level. Overall good value for money in the top segment. Now also watersports activities organised by the hotel outside on the beach.
