Over The Sands

"Great place for family holiday."
We arrived to The Sands in torrential rain from Phuket airport in very comfortable van provided by hotel. After two days the sun comeback, and our stay was better than expected for wet/low season (10 days). We loved the design of the hotel, with superb swimming pools for kids and separate for adults. All pools very clean. All hotel was very clean and staff friendly and helpful with any our requests. The direct beach front location allows for splitting time between beach and pools, but strong waves and back currents was keeping us away from sea swimming with kids. The food ... if you like thai cuisine this will be good choice as hotel provides very tasty meals and Khao lak main street proximity give you unlimited choices to fulfil your taste needs. The cooking clases organised by hotel are fabulous! We find that is quite a big gap in coctails quality between hotel bars. The best one Mango (close to kids club), then "the good" the pool bar a specially during happy hour, and finally the "the poor" bar close to reception (totally not in my taste), this opinion is totally subjective. Rooms for families are spacious and well designed, beds very comfortable - we cant find any space for improvement here, well done The Sands :) Entertainment - in low season almost non existing (cooking classes was great), but kids was really happy with kids club and provided kids activities, so happy kids = happy parents. Hotels also provides Thai massages and SPA treatments, on this field is still a space for improvement, from me four stars in that area. Overall- my score for this resort will be 8/10 mostly for not much entertainment. Hotel and service quality 9/10 (we had a really nice birthday/sunset dinner with exquisite service), so in overall I can give 9/10 :) In other words you will be happy and satisfied if you stay here with your family. Ps. Note for the hotel kitchen: Coffe machines - brilliant idea, for more improvement-> please start to offer Thai Tea on the breakfast 😙
We stayed late April for 8 nights on a scoopon voucher. The scoopon voucher stated access to 5 pools (This was totaly untrue). Luckily we contacted them directly and upgraded to a pool access room. This gave us access to 3 pools. Without the upgrade we would have only had access to 2 pools. Those 2 pools were at best horrible to swim in. Although they were beautifully clean and had a lovely outlook, the water temperature felt like we were swimming in hot soup. We were cooler out of the pool than in the pool. We expected in 35 degree weather and 80% humidity to feel refreshed in the pool. They were like hot baths instead. Luckily the 3rd pool that we coukd access directly from our room was at a pleasant temperature. Pool chairs all around the resort were very uncomfortable to staybon for any period of time as they had no cushioning. Room was nice but we could see hand marks/fingerprints all over the tiles and frosted glass doors in the bathroom area. Cleanliness could have been much better. Bed was very firm but we both had great sleeps all 8 nights. We had a couple of dinners included and the food was far from impressive for a resort. Breakfast included and it was just average. No matter what time we went down the food had always been sitting there far too long where they cooked up too much at once, thus it never presented fresh. The location itself is lovely and is a short walk to a heap of restaurants, small markets, supermarkets and massage shops. Had previously stayed at Katathani in Kata beach, thus why we chose the sands. The Sands fails miserably to be anything like the kevel of their sister resort.
"Beautiful resort. "
The resort is just beautiful. Hotel rooms are clean, modern and comfortable. The cleaning staff always pleasant and do a great job! The grounds are stunning with the beach, grass and pool areas. Very well kept. Location of the resort is great. We didn't mind walking to the Main Street, it was only about 5-10 minutes and the choice of restaurants and shops is great. Breakfast had a nice large choice, had one dinner and one lunch in either of the hotel restaurants and both good quality. Only thing I would recommend is that bar staff at the adult pool bar be more friendly. I don't think we ever got greeted, most times only got handed the menu and then to sign the bill. What really makes our holidays memorable are staff that like to chat, have a large smile and appear to enjoy their job(personal opinion, some guests may not like that). Unfortunately happy hour at the pool wasn't overly enjoyable for us. If the staff could interact with guests it would be lots of fun! Overall a very enjoyable stay. Thankyou. :)
"Nice, But It Lacks Soul"
This was our first trip to Thailand, and therefore we do not have any other hotels to compare this one to. The transfer from the airport was around 1 hour 20 minutes, we arrived fairly early in the morning and I was not expecting our room to be ready, however it was, which after 15 hours travelling was a great relief and very welcome. The room was on the 2nd floor with a partial sea view. It was clean, bright and airy with a nice layout. The bed faced out on to the balcony and there was a comfy sofa in front of it. The bathroom was set behind the bed with a tub bath, separate shower and toilet. I am not a fan of glass door on toilets, and these lacked even more privacy than most others (what is the fascination with glass doors on toilets that give you some visibility of the user?) Our air conditioning was very noisy which meant that you could not keep it ticking over during the night as it kept you awake. It wasn't broken, it was just noisy! There was plenty of storage space in the room and it was clean and tidy, although i did have to beat the hell out of a large cockroach that found its way in to our room (those things are near enough bullet proof!) The pool area and the gardens are lovely, really well maintained and give a lovely view. There is a separate pool for children, and the main pool is a "quiet" pool. It does state that children under 12 are not permitted in there between certain times, however parents being parents just ignored that rule when it suited and some of the children were not "quiet" The restaurants are lovely and the food is good (breakfast in the floating market was ample and catered for almost all tastes). I have read reviews on here where people have moaned that breakfast didn't change for seven days.......I am not really sure what you can change, and i noticed that somethings did change on a daily basis. We took advantage of a free massage that came with our booking, it was amazing, so good in fact we both booked for a full Thai massage for one hour which cost 450THB each (about £10 each). There is something surreal about having a massage so close to the beach whilst listening to the waves crashing down. My title says the hotel lacks soul. I know it was the low season when we visited, but the hotel felt empty, and as a result the bars and restaurants in the evening were practically deserted. We ate in the Floating Market on evening and for the first 30 minutes we were the only ones in there. It is a shame, because a decent bar in the evening would have been the perfect end to the day. At times you could have been mistaken for thinking you were the only people there. Fortunately in the evening you are only a five minute stroll from the vast array of bars and restaurants on the main road in Khao Lak. I would thoroughly recommend walking up the road in the evening (perfectly safe) and exploring the night life. We found some super bars and restaurants as well as a 7 Eleven store where we purchased water, soft drinks and crisps for our room (they supply you an empty fridge to store it all in). All in all i was not disappointed with any particular aspect, it is a very nice hotel, and with a few touches it could be a great hotel. The one thing they have absolutely spot on is the staff. Each and every member of staff was superb, really friendly and welcoming, and we found that of the Thai people in general, what a wonderful race they are. My tips are: 1) Make use of the town for water and soft drinks (and beer if you wish) as there is a fridge in your room which is empty and ready for your use. 2) Wander in to town at night for your evening meal and drinks, there are some great bars and restaurants. It only takes five minutes and is perfectly safe. 3) Do not use the tap water, it is not safe to drink and my advice would be to use bottled water for everything including rinsing your toothbrush. 4) Make use of the swimming pool, it is lovely, clean and warm 5) Have a massage at the hotel, yes you can get one in town, but the prices are roughly the same and the location in the hotel right next to the beach is great for relaxing.
"A wonderful stay for our family"
We stayed for 8 nights with our 2 year old and 21 month old. The hotel was fantastic, the room we stayed in (Family room) was a great size and layout for the kids. Our 3 year old loved her "bedroom" as we could close it off from our room with sliding doors and she loved having a television in her room. Having access to Disney Junior was great as it kept the kids entertained when needed. We found the hotel itself was very clean. There was always someone cleaning. Everyone was friendly, they were fantastic with the kids. Numerous times we found our eldest was in the arms of one of the staff chatting happily away to them. We ordered kids meals for room service and the kids approved and ate all of it. The kids club was great for our kids too, just bear in mind you can only leave kids on their own there if they 4+ years old. You can pay for a babysitter to watch the younger kids at the kids club or in your hotel room though. Our kids loved feeding the fish at breakfast time, it's nice that the hotel lets the kids get involved in that. And it is a free activity. The only cons with the hotel was the long steep driveway and they didn't offer to cart you up to the main road. It was hard at times carrying our 21month old up that driveway numerous times a day. We did ask to be carted up to the street once and they didn't say no but they did say they weren't supposed to do it. As they were meant to stay in the hotel grounds. However we only wanted to be carted up to their sister hotel The Leaf which was at the top of the driveway. Suggestion to the hotel is that it might be something worth looking into as it would make it so much easier for parents carrying young kids. Other than that we couldn't fault it. We watched the most beautiful sunsets in the evening. We couldn't swim in the beach as it was low season and the beach was too rough but the pools were great. We would happily return if we came back to visit Khao Lak.
