"A slice of Yoga Heavan"
We visited 3rd week in April this year. This is our second stay at The Sands but this time we bought along 16 others with us on our Yoga Retreat. Our first stay was to scout the Resort which did not disappoint so it was decided to hold our Yoga Retreat here. It was a success with all our guests having the most amazing time and left with an experience they will never forget. Everything was just perfect. The sea was not so rough but this will change during the low season which commences in May. The managers and staff assistance was excellent and they did whatever they could do to make sure that our stay and programme ran to perfection. From accommodation to meals (they accommodated all special meal requests from Vego to Gluten free and other) to Yoga areas set up on the resort ground to tour programmes. The great weather also added to the magic of our Yoga experience. The resort is located only just over 1hr from Phuket airport and much quieter than the noise of Patong. But don't be fooled into thinking there is nothing here. Everything on your doorstep practically. Shops, restaurants (cheap food) galore and many 7eleven and Family Marts dotted along the main road just a 5 minute walk to the main road. The Spa treatments are to die for at the Resort but plenty of massage huts at cheaper prices along the beach (may close during the low season) or on the main road. You can access other parts in surrounding areas and a visit to White Beach is recommended. Will we be back. We certainly hope so
"Couldn't have expected better!"
My wife and I had the pleasure of a recent stay at The Sands, and we couldn't have been happier. From the seamless check in, despite a late arrival, to the super resort staff, to the super easy checkout, we thoroughly enjoyed our time at this resort. While not 5 star, you get what you pay for. So we didn't go in with any unrealistic ideas about what to expect. Staying in the original part of the resort, the rooms are a little tired, but we are not on holiday to live in a hotel room! The addition of a topper to the mattress took away the firmness, and house keeping was superb. Loved the empty fridge and the onsite mini mart with reasonable prices too. Only real disappointment was a steak at Talay, but no other issue with food. Location to nearby restaurants is great. The addition of the great new wing, almost made the older swimming pools feel like an adult only resort, we hardly saw a kid! Overall, I would recommend this resort to anyone who asked. Special mention to No in the Mango bar, who was the perfect example of Thai hospitality, thanks No! We can't wait to return, hopefully, see you year ðŸ‘ðŸ¼ðŸ¹â˜€ï¸
"A beautiful find 😊"
The Sands Khao Lak - We arrived here Sunday the 20th of May. Check-in was easy. We have spent four nights here. Love the open plan layout of the resort. The king size bed we had was quite firm but not enough to make our bodies sore in the morning. As I write this it's checkout day today & of all things we found a form that you could fill in if you wanted your mattress changed - doh! Just goes to show that it's always best to go through all the paperwork before totally enjoying yourself. 😊 We were allocated a room in the newest block of the resort with pool access as booked. The room has a nautical flavor to it. As wr are here in the low season, there weren't that many people here which was a good thing. There a variety of different restaurants and bars to enjoy. As this is the start of the wet season we're seeing some really heavy rain & sharp short thunderstorms which for me is quite enjoyable. The resort is far enough away from the main street to keep away from it's noise yet close enough to walk down to. The room is very quiet even though we have people in both rooms either side of us. The air conditioning at night is slightly noisy (air noise) and a split system could be a little quieter yet the air conditioning is very effective. Perhaps the air flow noise stopped us hearing outside noise - who knows but we slept ok anyhow although I think in high season it could be a different thing. . The gym is quite good for a resort. And the staff generally are lovely as are most of them are traditional Thai people. Some of the other user friendly things I like are the USB power points so you don't have to have adapters clogging up bench space. The outside pool is made of lightly coloured smoothed concrete which gives a partial grippy surface. This is really good because at the last resort we last stayed they used glazed tiles which are ultra smooth & l slipped on them. Grazed my side & left elbow. The pool access room we had has 2 tv's, sliding doors to partition off open room, excellent bathroom facilities, beach towel drop right outside each front door, fan in room as well as outside under balcony area & the list goes on... We asked for a 1 hour extension on our check out to coincide with our transit pick up & that was no hastle at all. Love the large glass airconditioned lobby too Thoroughly recommend a stay here. Maybe a little longer for us next time 😊
"Still a Great Stay"
We returned to the wonderful Sands Resort last Sunday (20 May). Our arranged pickup was waiting upon our arrival and we had our fastest trip from the airport to the resort (slightly over an hour) and were checked in quickly. We had requested the same junior suite we had on our first trip in August 2015 and our wish was granted. We are staying for 9 nights, 8 of which are through Luxury Escapes. Due to our late arrival and long travelling day, we opted for room service and once again, they did not fail to meet our expectations, perfect. For this time of year there are afternoon and evening thunderstorms and the grounds smelled wonderfully fresh from recent rain. We awoke next morning to a fine day with mild humidity and as previous we viewed from our balcony the busy morning rituals of staff, gardeners and pool attendants all going about their tasks. Breakfast in the Floating Market Restaurant was also superb with an abundance of choices. It is refreshing to find great coffee via machines and natural (not powdered) fruit juices. They still have a small problem with the cheeky sparrows and myna birds, but, most staff are vigilant with diners leaving unattended food at their tables. To ease down the breakfast, we strolled/walked north along the beach and back to the resort for around 3/4hr. It was good to find that the beach was far cleaner in relation to washed up litter, compared to our previous visit, their government initiative is working. Still no sun lounges on the actual beach and Peter Bar has been relocated from the beach to the main road (slightly to the left and over the main road from the Resort roadway) We spent the rest of the day re familiarising ourselves with the resort and facilities and lazing around the Seaside Pool (formerly the Adult Pool). The new Aqua Wing is now up and running ( we still have to explore) and the Family Pool is now the Adult Pool, which I find a little confusing, as it doesn’t have a swim up bar, although the Mango Bar is only a short walk away. We had Dinner at the Talay Resturant and as it happened had a deck side table and were treated to a spectacular Khao Lak sunset. Food and service at the Talay cannot be faulted and with the help of an included Luxury Escapes dining voucher the evening was most enjoyable and affordable. The dining choices we made (3 course) were gourmet in both taste and presentation. More to post in a couple of days, the Pool awaits.
"FAR FROM 5 STAR LUXURY!! WEDDING DISAPPOINTMENT, UNACCEPTALBLE CLEANING STANDARDS, POO FOUND SUNKEN IN POOL, NO ENGLISH."
Having booked a couple of different trips through specials we’ve seen on Luxury Escapes we had high hopes and expectations of where we would be staying and what was being recommended. We have always had our eye on The Shore at Katathani in Phuket so you can understand our excitement when their sister property in Khao Lak popped up. We decided to get our family on board and we booked an 8 night stay at The Sands by Katathani. Having a 3 year old we upgraded to the Family Room for $1200 (normally $4000). During this time my partner proposed so we decided it would be a perfect opportunity to arrange a surprise wedding since we only wanted an intimate ceremony with our parents. With 7 months to organize I had plenty of contact with the Wedding planner Khun Wiracha who was very helpful. We didn’t go with a standard package since there were only 6 of us, but nothing was too much trouble and all the planning was finalized very quickly without any stress. As I’d had so much contact with the resort prior I was just very excited to get there and enjoy beautiful Thailand. Although most of the staff was lovely enough and the resort appeared to be quite beautiful, upon closer inspection of our rooms, they were all very tired and run down. Towels with fraying and holes, mold around furniture and on walls, paint missing all over walls especially in bathrooms. It appears they have certainly been pumping more money in to their newly opened family wing than maintaining the rest of the resort. The new children’s water park was only half open and they were still having many teething issues with this. The staff at Coconut Bar offered excellent quality of service. The reception staff all very friendly and managed to sort most concerns with bills very fast. Unfortunately from Day 1 the flaws of the resort began to show and I was only hoping things would get better. But unfortunately when it got to the end of the holiday we couldn’t wait to leave. It’s fair to say we won’t be returning to this resort. • Complimentary Airport Transfer EXTREMELY DANGEROUS!! – No car seat available. Having lived in Thailand for a year 10 years ago I understood how dangerous the roads could be. SCARIEST trip I’ve ever had on any of my many travels throughout Asia. RISKY MANOEUVRES the entire way. The Driver was cutting in and out of traffic with oncoming traffic having to move completely off the road in order to let us by. At one point we caught him doing 100kms in a 40kms zone. Booking our return transfer we requested a different driver and car seat which the company was more than happy to provide. The car seat was broken and couldn’t use, however the driver was much safer. • INCORRECT CHARGING OF ITEMS – DOUBLES charged at the new Jelly Fish Bar when ordering singles. STAFF VERY RUDE when dealing with this error. LAUNDRY BEING OVER CHARGED - Items sent for pressing only but returned washed and pressed with a double charge attached. COMPLIMENTARY BUFFET DINNERS BEING CHARGED – Package gave us 2 dinners. Second night I advised that I wouldn’t be signing the charge docket as they had marked off our passport but still wanted us to sign a bill for 1000 baht. When advised I wouldn’t sign the staff were EXTREMELY RUDE....laughing and talking in Thai about us. • POO FOUND SUNKEN IN CHILDRENS POOL NEAR JELLY FISH BAR – Had quite obviously been there for a while and was discovered after someone stood in it. It was fair to say we didn’t return to that pool for the rest of our stay. • ENGLISH NOT SPOKEN BY MANY FRONTLINE STAFF – The resort promotes itself as a 5 star deluxe resort to families, I would’ve expected much higher level of language from staff dealing with guests. I use to work in a 5 star resort in Phuket and the requirement of language was very high. When arranging our wedding dinner with TALAY RESTAUARNT the staff slipped up on our surprise wedding the next day. Luckily our family was just out of ear shot. Miscommunication trying to arrange the dinner. Had to ask them to ring wedding planner to place the orders. MISUNDERSTANDING WITH LAUNDRY – Took many calls just to get them to come and pick up items for pressing. HOUSEKEEPING WALKED IN ON HUSBAND WHILE DRESSING – Housekeeping was bringing back laundry to room after having bought the incorrect items back. They knocked and my husband shouted back 1 minute. They didn’t wait just walked straight in. • BABYSITTER NO ENGLISH – we arranged 2 hours of babysitting for my new husband and I to enjoy a buffet dinner as our 3 year old wasn’t well. We ended up cutting this short as when the babysitter arrived I had trouble explaining things in a way she could understand. I was very concerned that if anything was wrong with my son that he wouldn’t be able to get just standard needs meet. We didn’t use this service again during our stay. BAR STAFF AT ALL BARS EXPECT THE COCONUT BAR VERY LITTLE ENGLISH. • CLEANING STANDARDS NOT ACCEPTABLE – My son and I both got Thai belly. The day I had it my husband noticed the cleaner using the toilet water only to wipe out the toilet. Then going ahead to clean other things in the room. Same mop used outside then the whole way through the room. Every day following we took it upon ourselves to wipe the toilet and bathroom down with antibacterial gel. • GYM LOUD FROM 7AM WITH WEIGHTS BEING DROPPED AND NOISE VIBRATING TO ROOMS ABOVE – This occurred every day during our stay.... no sleep in’s for us. Spoke to reception manager and she tried to move our rooms but since it was close to the end of our stay we decided to stay in first room. • WEDDING DAY – WRONG BOUQUET COLOURS, MISSING AND MISMATCHED BUTTONHOLES, MISMATCHED FLOWERS FOR CAKE, CAKE COULD’VE FEED AN ARMY INSTEAD OF OUR INTIMATE GUEST LIST OF 6 AND WEDDING PLANNER NOT TO BE SEEN UNTIL CEREMONY. We had a lovely day though in the planning of some items not everything was as I’d hoped. When planning a Wedding summary was put together. It had images along with full detail of colouring and look I wanted for flowers, cake etc as I wanted items different to what was in the regular packages offered. On the day flowers were INCORRECT COLOUR, I chose blush colour roses, I instead received bright pink roses amoungst my chosen white orchids for bridal bouquet and grooms buttonhole. Had it been shared with me they couldn’t do the correct colouring I would’ve opted for an artificial bouquet bought from home. I was advised the greenery maybe wouldn’t be exactly as I wanted which I understood but the colouring of the flowers was important to me. The same was said for the flowers on the cake though this time there was no blush or pink rose. Just white orchids with white roses. These were meant to have the same look and colours as the bouquet. Buttonhole for my son and dad didn’t arrive at the wedding gallery until I asked the photographer to follow this up as the wedding planner wasn’t anywhere to be seen. When it did arrive only 1 turned up with the person who was taking us to the ceremony. Additional buttonhole handed to us as we were getting ready to walk down the aisle, WHICH DIDN’T MATCH THE OTHER ORDERED. Wedding planner was only seen once as she checked on the room we were getting ready in and then again as she handed us the missing button hole. This was extremely disappointing as I would’ve thought she would at least check in prior to the ceremony to make sure all was ok. I didn’t even hear from her following the day. Although we didn’t go with the resorts regular package I had purchased a lot of extra’s and would’ve thought a little more care would’ve been taken. At the time of ordering the cake I requested a small 1 tier cake for my intimate guest list of 6 as I didn’t want wastage. We ended up with a huge double cake looking like 1 tier. Even after all of us having a piece of cake it didn’t even look like it had been touched. We offered the rest of the cake to the staff at the restaurant where we had dinner as we didn’t have anywhere to store it and to be honest there wasn’t really anything special about the flavour of it for us to want to keep it. VERY EXPENSIVE CAKE TO FEED THE HOTEL STAFF. It looked huge compared to the topper I had arranged for it. • SPA TREATMENTS – Our package included spa treatments. On closer inspection these were offered in an outdoor sala near the beach front. VERY DISSAPPOINTED THESE WEREN’T OFFERED AS REAL SPA TREATMENTS IN THE ACTUAL RESORT SPA.
