Over The Sands

Our favorite

"Nice short stay"

All facilities were very good, room, service, staff, breakfast, well kept gardens, nice pool area, no complaints. Only downside for us was the size of the hotel, much bigger than expected we just prefer smaller. Khao Lak beach is beautiful we used to walk it every day before breakfast. Walked into town to eat at night found some good restaurants, all serve pretty much the same, disappointment was that Thailand isn't big on wine or fizz which I really missed, you can get wine, but it's not the best and is quite expensive. Enjoy your holiday!

"Lots of room for improvement"

   21-03-2017
Where to start with this place... it's quite frustrating because it could be worthy of its 5 star rating with some fairly minor changes. I'll start with these and they are meant as constructive feedback for the management. 1. Dinner choice and quality onsite isn't great. More what you would expect at a 3 star hotel on the Costa's in Spain. Even greater shame that prices are more than double that of restaurants a few minutes walk outside of the hotel. This explains the mass exodus every evening leaving the hotel very quiet. More on that later. 2. Breakfast much the same in terms of quality and choice. Assume most people are on B&B basis and breakfast should be a delight. With a few small changes it could be. Just one example would be the offerings of coffee and tea at the table but when you ask for English breakfast tea you have to get it yourself. When you get to the urn etc you find there are no cups so you have to walk back to your table to get one from there. I know it's a tiny thing but for breakfast at a 5 star hotel the basics should be met. Also no spoon on the tables so if you get cereal, yogurt etc you have to remember to pick one up while getting your meal. Lack of choice all round and very few pastries, just standard croissant mainly. Cooked selection not great and consists of chewy bacon, chicken hot dogs, eggs and beans. There are 3 choices of eggs though to be fair and an omelette station. 3. Sunbeds!! We noted a few other guests complained about these. Wasn't expecting them to be quite as uncomfortable though. I can safely say they are the most uncomfortable I have ever had the misfortune to use. Numb backside is guaranteed! 4. Evening entertainment options are dire! They usually have a duet on in the main restaurant but they will be done by 9pm. They had a show on one night that involved the same dance many times with changes of costume in between; very cringey! There is a games room which has table tennis and a pool table but inexplicably this closes at 8pm sharp. Leaving you only 3 options. Head to one of the bars, go back to your room or leave the hotel. If I was running this place I would want as many people to stay on site as possible! Just some ideas that could be implemented very easily: Outdoor cinema Games competitions More upbeat band Party night once a week Beach party/BBQ Ok now for some positives :) It's a nice hotel. Fairly modern with everything you would expect in the rooms. We had a swim up room which was decent. The staff on the whole are brilliant. Very happy, smiley and will do anything to help you. That really sums up Thai people in general though. The location is good, direct access to a pleasant beach which is nice for a long walk. Lots of bars and restaurants on the beach to stop at but feel they are probably a bit hit and miss so pot luck. Don't think we will return to Khao Lak. Having travelled to other parts of Thailand (Koh Samui, Koh Phanang, Koh Tao) I would recommend these over Khao Lak. I know it's Phukets quieter neighbour but it's too quiet and just doesn't have the options of the other islands. The other thing we didn't particularly like is that the hotel is obviously sold in package holidays across Europe by Tui etc and you can expect a majority of these guests (if you get my meaning). No problem if you don't mind that but we did. We prefer a mix of other guests from all over the world not just 1 or 2. People very much kept themselves to themselves. I guess being on the package tour market could be the root cause of some of the things that aren't up to scratch. TUI no doubt force them to sell rooms at rock bottom prices to get their massive margin while the hotel is forced to lower standards to keep costs down. It's a real shame and one reason we don't do package holidays any more! The hotel either needs to knock a star off its own rating to be more realistic or make some improvements to be fair to its guests. Ok so it's not charging top prices but it by no means cheap either. Again we have stayed at better for less in Thailand. If these improvements were made I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel, unfortunately in its current state I could not.

"Great weekend "

It is a big resort so if you don't like. If complex don't go there. But it is very nice. Rooms are great very quiet. Pools are good too. Breakfast is amazing. The beach in front of the resort is great too. Even if it is a big resort it is very quiet and you can enjoy it. Good for families with kids. We came here to avoid Phuket busy beaches and we really like it. For 2 nights it was enough for us because not so many things to do.

"We just came home from a tree week vacation at the sands and we are really happy to have chosen The Sands"

It is a very nice hotel complex with a beautiful environement and a great and clean beach. The view from our room was great. Our room was very good with all you need. Room-service excellent. The restaurants were perfect not only those in The Sands but as well those in town which by the way is just a stone's throw away. It really is a calm place. The staff was very friendly. The knowledge of the english language however should be improved. We really loved our vacation very much!

"Beach side heaven."

I stayed at The Sands for 1 week in March and was thoroughly pleased. Firstly the location is very handy, a 5-10 minute walk to town or 100 baht ($4aud) in a tuk tuk; the resort sits right on a beautiful clean beach. Check in was quick and friendly with an inviting lobby and was shown to our room promptly. I stayed in a junior suite with pool access, the room is spacious, clean and well appointed.....it is starting to show small signs of wear but still in good keep....and the access to your own pool is so worth it....the pool is kept very clean. The buffett breakfast is very good with a friendly smile by staff and plentiful fresh Western and Asian fare to be had. The grounds and gardens are beautiful and tended to well, the staff are always helpful and obliging ....and the other facilities ie bars, gym, restaurants, other pools are all of a high standard, and the atmosphere and ambience of the resort is relaxed sea side. This resort is large but uncrowded, you can get a chair by the pool or beach anytime of the day, this resort will suite families, couples and singles alike, i enjoyed my stay here , thank you The Sands.
