Over Katathani Beach Resort

"Ideal for families"

   21-05-2017
We stayed here for a week and upgraded to the Junior Suite which had a sea view, we initially booked the grand deluxe room but it was towards the back of the hotel and the area, and views aren't great. The junior suites are dated and in need of modernisation but comfortable and within easy walking distance to the several pools and restaurants. On arrival the member of staff was very helpful, a young man who went out of his way to sort the right room for us. With the upgrade we got complimentary wifi which was good, otherwise it's only avail in the lobby areas, which isn't great for a 5 star hotel. The buffet breakfast was good, very busy even for the low season with plenty of choice. The kids loved the chocolate fountain and do-noughts!! We only ate at the hotel at lunch time, we went and ate at the restaurants right outside the hotel (smile restaurant) and we went into Kata which is 5 minutes by Tuk Tuk or a 15 minute walk. 200 baht is the going rate which when added up twice a day can be costly. There is plenty for the kids to do, if it rains there is a brand new kids club and they are just finishing off some water slides/activities at the back of the hotel this week too( shame we missed out on these.) Thete are 3 small slides towards the left of the complex and lots of other pools to play in. The pool bar is good, happy hour from 5.30-7pm cocktails and beers/spirits 135 baht which isn't that cheap but they have a good selection and the staff are nice and friendly. The views are great and you can sit and watch the sunset, really nice area with its own private beach that stretches right along the hotel. Beware the waves and the choppy sea, most days the red flags were out but people still happy to swim in the sea. Watch out for jelly fish too!! We had a really enjoyable week here, great location, lots to do to keep kids entertained and all amenities are close, supermarkets on the doorstep, money exchange, taxis, massage parlours, everything you need is right there.

"Surprised by high TA rating"

   20-05-2017
Stayed at katathani for 8 nights in early May on a luxury escapes voucher. We did enjoy our stay, however we followed it up with an 8 night stay at the JW Marriott Khao Lak - boy what a difference. It made the Katathani look like a 3 star motel. Improvements needed at the Katathani, big time! I'm genuinely surprised by the hotel's high rating on trip advisor. THE BEACH Kata noi really is a lovely beach. We're Aussie, so our beach standards are pretty high. We preferred this beach to those on Koh Samui and in Khao Lak. Clear, warm water, clean, white sand, just enough surf. At the end of the day, if you stay at katathani, you're paying for the privilege of a near-private beach, with very little hassle from beach vendors which is a hop, skip, and a jump from your hotel room. THE ROOM We upgraded from a deluxe room in the Bhuri wing, to a junior suite in the Thani wing. DEFINITELY UPGRADE. The bhuri wing is very separate from the rest of the hotel, and feels isolated. We asked for a ground floor suite, as we travelled with a nine month old baby/pram. We liked being able to just sit on the balcony, beach right in front of us, pool right there, people watching all day. Perfect for when our baby slept. We were in room 5115 which we thought was a perfect room location in terms of our balcony. Renu our cleaner was the sweetest thing. The Thani wing is divided in two sections by the lobby. The andaman wing and the kata noi wing, each with their own pool out the front. We stayed on the KN side and much preferred this side and this pool. Quieter than andaman, and a little more scenic with more palm trees, more grass, and less chaos (and kids). I completely agree with many of the reviews - the rooms are VERY tired looking and definitely not to the 5 star standard of other SE Asia hotels. There was a musty smell to the room and the air con is too powerful - it's all or nothing. Hardly a 'suite' - think of it as merely a room. I would not pay full price to stay here given the quality of the rooms, but i guess if you can get over this aspect and just enjoy the beach, the pool, the resort in general, and the voucher, it's ok. Katathani management - definitely time for a refurb if you want to continue charging the full-price charges. OTHER FACILITIES Again, echoing room comments above, in desperate need of a refurb. Looking very 90s and tired. Everything is fairly clean though. In terms of the public spaces, again, refurb long overdue. Dated. STAFF Staff are friendly, but no where near as friendly and accommodating as the staff we encountered at the JW Marriott. I did notice that less staff speak conversational English than other Thai hotels I have stayed in, but first world problem really. The massage ladies by the pool have a little attitude - I always felt like I was burdening them by asking them for a massage. I also got the feeling they were talking and laughing about guests, myself included, while they work. Not nice. THE VOUCHER Good value for money, as opposed to staying there without the voucher. Having all meals included really does save you money if you plan to eat at the hotel regularly, and the food is reasonable. Breakfast was a little so so - I've definitely had much better buffets. Served in both the main buffet hall and a quieter, more scenic restaurant up the other end of the resort (called seacret). We preferred the later as you're literally overlooking the water. The main buffet hall isn't so nice - has a kind of meat market feel to it. Lunch served in secret or fishermans wharf. Definitely recommend the later - staff and service better! Secret staff were very slow and inattentive. Dinners served in almost all outlets, but our fave again was fishermans wharf. Good food, atmosphere and staff, and very close to our room. Live band perhaps needs a new playlist. Their repertoire was about 5 songs, on repeat. If you travel with luxury escapes, you can select from the set menu, or you can choose from the main menu with 350 baht credit for lunch and 650 baht for dinner. Either option fine. Highly recommend fish in fishermans wharf restaurant. We enjoyed our tapas meal at The Harbour, the restaurant at The Shore. The massages can only be redeemed poolside, and not in the spa. This isnt a problem - it's nice having a massage on your sun bed. There massage ladies roam around all day by the pools - you can call one over at any time. You can have a Thai massage, or you can interchange for a mani, pedi, foot scrub or foot massage. That said, id probably prefer less massages, say 5 or 6 (as opposed to 16) but in the spa. TRAVELING WITH A BABY We had a few different babysitters. They were all lovely, competent and I trusted them. My only comment - it would be helpful for them to speak more English. I could not pass on information about our son, and they couldn't really fill me in on how he went. But, he smiled whenever he saw them, and that speaks volumes. 200 baht per child per hr. Get a ground floor room, in the kata noi wing. OTHER HINTS Get laundry done across the road. Various local vendors along the kata noi drag. 80 baht per kg. Much cheaper than the hotel. 24 hr turnaround. Beware the minimart laundry though - they lost some items and the lady is so rude. Also a pharmacy, minimart and 7/11 across the road. Wifi was terrible. In and out. We had to keep reconnecting with the code and password. In all, ok, but I definitely won't be back, even on a voucher. We are not fussy, we certainly don't stay in 5 star hotels the world over, but for Thailand, this hotel needs to improve.

"Mixed Review"

   19-05-2017
We stayed here for eight nights. We paid for an upgrade when making the booking for a high floor, ocean front junior suite. When we arrived we discovered we had been booked in to a standard room. Eventually we were reluctantly allocated a ground floor ocean front room. The room was a bit tired and in need of an upgrade, the air conditioning smelled bad, the floor very dirty and in need of a good clean. The bed was memory foam and for me too hot and too soft it also needed a clean mattress cover as it smelled of sweaty bodies. We had no initial expectations but were somewhat disappointed. On a more positive note, the staff were very pleasant, helpful and friendly, and the food quite good. The grounds and pools are lovely and well cared for. The resort is situated on a quiet, clean private beach and the choice of restaurants quite good. We might be inclined to give Katathani another try.

"Second Time Round"

   18-05-2017
We have now stayed twice at Katathani and loved it as much this time as we did the first time. Great staff and service. All very friendly and helpful. Room was great and was all we required. Food good. We had buffet breakfast every day over looking the sea. You had the choice of pools or else walk a short distance for a swim in the sea. Thanks again Katathani! M Oliver

"Great vacation!"

   18-05-2017
Katathani was a great stay. We just finished a 12 day stay and it was great. We stayed in the buhri wing with a garden view. It was a nice large room with a gigantic bed! The resort is large but you really don't feel it. Many pools and lounge chairs to choose from and access to a beautiful public beach. It's right on the property so not a far walk. There is a breakfast buffet but we preferred the breakfast door knock option for the extra cost. We were able to pre order what we wanted and the time and it was delivered to our room! We loved this! The gym has treadmills, rower, dumbbells up to 50lbs, elliptical, and bikes. We found everything we needed to get in great workouts after eating all the amazing food. We enjoyed our stay and found the staff helpful. We would stay here again.
