Over Paradisus Varadero

I came here in July with my sister and my cousin for a summertime family vacay. It was our first time in Cuba, and we had a great time. The resort and the spa were very pretty, and beach was absolutely beautiful. Almost everyday was clear blue skies to match the clear turquoise water, and there were always water activities to do (scuba diving, kayaking etc.) and always a space to relax on at the beach. FOOD First off the food was okay, probably a 3/5. Some dishes were much better than others in the buffet area, but some of the a la carte restaurants were a little disappointing. The food in the buffet area is in a wide open space, and the dining area itself is in the same open space. So the area is very free for flies and birds to fly through (and they do). Grilled meat and fish on the beach everyday at lunch were great, probably the highlight food-wise. ROOM We stayed in the main area of the resort. The first room we had was on ground level, but we switched afternoon 2 nights to a room on a second level villa because of bugs. Granted, this is a tropical country and should be expected. We were just not prepared to stay in a room where it was easy for very large insects to appear (they are definitely much larger than what you would see in a Canadian city, and insects of any size are just not our cup of tea). The room itself was perfectly fine, with comfortable beds and all the basics you would need. Slightly dated, but nothing terrible, we barely stayed in the room anyway so we didn't need much. SERVICE The service was fantastic. The vast majority of the staff were extremely nice and attentive. There was a very kind lady who made our eggs every morning (we regrettably did not get her name). Kenia was our very cheerful server almost every morning for breakfast and we could not have asked for anyone better. Janice was the amazing cleaning lady for the first room we stayed in (and was kind enough to clean up the mess we made after we had frantically killed insects the night before! We actually do not know what we would have done without her). By far the best part of our trip was the constant stream of things to do and watch between the beach and all the entertainment. Jimmy, Andy, Eddie, and Ray were the entertainers who made our trip amazing. We had endless fun with them on the beach doing water aerobics, playing volleyball, dancing lessons, making drinks, and everything in between. Any questions we had they would answer, and there were many times between activities that we would all laugh and have fun. Our trip definitely would not have been the same without them. Overall I would give 4.5/5 stars. Would definitely come back again :)
"Amazing relaxing vacation !!!!"
I stayed at the Paradisus Varadero with my family, my husband and my 2 children, 7 and 10 years old. We've been many times to Cuba so we pretty much know what to expect . My kids and us just LOVE THE BEACH and once again.... it was just amazing. When we got to the hotel it was pretty late but check in was done in no time they were very welcoming. When we got to the room it is true that they need some update... but it was very clean. We enjoyed pretty much all of the restaurant a la carte but my kids favorite was the Italian!!!! We hate à la carte every night expect for the first day... never had a problem booking any of them. As per the buffet , yes there's flys and little birds... but the view .... is tropical.... !!! The food is good ... you can always find something you like. After a few days we had some issue with our room... and a crab !!!! Kept on knocking at our Patio door... Huge crab... it was a pretty funny situation . Since my kids were very scared of the crab the change us rooms to the Family Concierge. That section is all brand new beautiful spacious rooms. They have a a buffet for them self, I only used but it look very nice and food was good.Even had a little section for the kids. I must say that the service we got there was definitely upgraded !!! Emilio our concierge was very caring always smiling! And the manager taking care of the family Concierge Tiziana is just amazing !!!! By far one of the most professional people I met ! She is caring and really empathizes with her client.. something sometimes we don't really see. She will go out of her way to accommodate you and your family. I would definitly go back to Paradisius but probably in the family concierge, the kids really loved it !!
"Beautiful beach, developing world hotel"
This resort is located on a sprawling property with a beautiful beach. Keeping in mind this is still a developing country, judge the hotel accordingly. As a first time visitor to Cuba, the country/food quality/hotel/tours/amenities/currency/technology/connectivity reminded me of pre-WTO 2002 China. This was no different for this hotel - a 4-5 star in China is pretty much what you'd expect at Paradisus. PROS: That being said, the waterfront and fine sandy beach was beautiful, with clear water around 25c. As an all inclusive, the original area is lovely with a great layout. Easy access to the beach from the bar, dining areas, and rooms. Bring an insulated bottle as the bar can refill it with icy bevvies like pina coladas or mojitos, and you can bring it straight to the beach. No sand! I also brought my portable solar charger, which was great for charging devices on the beach, since some of the outlets in the room were pretty sketch and unreliable. There's a 24h snack bar, dining room, 4 individual restaurants, a gym, and the YHI spa. There's also a currency exchange, stage with performances, and a couple little huts that sell kitschy souvenirs. There's a number of pools on the property, but our favourite was the main one where there was an in-pool bar. CONS: While everything is within walking distance, the layout with the Royal Service expansion looks to be an after thought. WIFI is *HORRIBLE* and only available intermittently in the foyer and in the Royal Service area, as well as the Fusion restaurant. Staff are paid poorly and seem to rely on tips. Bring cash... and get tons of small CUC for tips, though the currency exchange will be reluctant to give you any. The 24h snack bar was out a number of items the every time we tried to go. The dining hall was infested by flies that had first dibs on everything in the uncovered buffet, pretty much living on the dessert table around the cakes and ice cream toppings. I've even spied a couple cucarachas on the fruit table. Servers here are largely indifferent, though they are much best in the fusion restaurant, and better in the other a la cartes. As a foodie from Vancouver, the Cuban Asian was brutal. All the restaurants seem to repurpose food from the dining hall in their meals... which is good for food wastage I guess, though that also meant we found a fly in one of our cooked dishes. Be sure to bring enough sunscreen, after sun lotion, and whatnot, as expectedly the on-site store will totally gouge you as will the little souvenir tiki huts. Linens in your room aren't changed unless you request them to, and you're only given one set of beach/bathroom towels... again, until you ask them to change it for you. It's so humid there, our towels never really dried. The bed and pillows were much firmer than my liking... again, reminding me of similarly rated hotels in China. The gym was decent, though on one occasion didn't open til several hours after it was supposed to, as the guy didn't show up! The spa's prices were pretty much on par with North American prices, but the services and products weren't. There was ongoing construction between the pool and beach areas, which was pretty loud, disruptive, and messy. Majority of the chairs and tables along the pool/beach were reserved early by folks, so get your towel out there earlier than later. Especially as many chairs on the beach were in disrepair. The long and short of it? Seems to be one of the better hotels in Veradero, service is nothing to write home about, hotel amenities are so-so. All in all, it's a developing country and the resort surficially looks to be better than many of the others we passed by. Keeping in mind it's a developing country, I'd still come back. Just temper your expectations accordingly.
We stayed in the Royal Service for two weeks on our honeymoon in July. We arrived with slight trepidation after reading some very damming reviews on trip advisor, however within 2 mins of arriving all our concerns disappeared. We stayed in the Royal Service section and can honestly say we had an amazing two weeks. Our butler Javier was fantastic and went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we required to have a special honeymoon, always asking if there was anything we needed, making sure our room had the drinks we liked, organised two romantic bubble baths and organised our evening meals. He's a real credit to the hotel. The restaurants did the best they could with the ingredients available.....we heard negative comments from various guests about the meals, but we always found something on the menus that we enjoyed. Is it five star food by English standards, no, but I'm in Cuba, not England. We particularly enjoyed the meals at the Japenese and Bella Mar restaurants. Our barman Jose in the royal service bar on an evening was fantastic, always having a smile, remembering our favourite drinks and coming up with numerous cocktails for us to try. Again, as with Javier, he's a real asset to the hotel. Special mention to the the gentleman and lady who work alternate days in the pool bar, they work in hot temperatures with a constant smile on their faces. They remember your drinks so very rarely did we need to ask, they just appeared which came in handy with the hot weather. Rooms might need a bit of TLC, however they had everything you could wish for and the sea view from our room was worth the money alone. I'd also recommend the spa to anyone, we went twice and loved both trips. Again the staff are smiley, helpful and the views are stunning. Can't comment much on the other parts of the hotel too much as didn't spend much time their, however the family concierge area is nice, modern and has some good live music on an evening. For those who like to keep up with social media, the Internet is best in this part of the hotel. I'd say to anyone about to visit this hotel, come with an open mind, understand you are coming to Cuba and just embrace it. It's a stunning country with lovely people and the hotel goes out of its way to give you the holiday of a lifetime. We would definitely love to visit again.
"Detailed Review with Tips and Recommendations"
We are Canadians who travelled in August 2017 for a week. (He has been to Cuba four times and it was my first time.) We stayed in the Royal Service section and it is highly recommended as we heard many complaints about the main section. Everything below is based on Royal Service. We also included our tips and recommendations for everyone. Pros: ~Read the resort website for details about what Royal Service includes ~Butler service is exceptional. They will book the a la cart restaurants and address any of your needs ~Bartender brings you your drinks at the pool or beach ~Access to 13 outdoor beds and exclusive pool for Royal Service ~Scuba diving lesson is free. You practice 2 exercises in a swimming pool. This determines if you qualify to go the next day in open waters. Note: you must know how to swim to scuba dive. I cannot swim but did the lesson in the pool. Scuba diving in ocean is free for the first session. You leave at 8:45 am and return around 2 pm. You pay 50 CUC to do a second scuba session. Note: you cannot drink 12 hours before or fly 24 hours afterwards. ~Golf cart rides to other areas such as main lobby or restaurants. ~Cleaning staff makes swan, faces or heart out of towels ~Free catamaran trip along the beach. You can also do 2 person kayak, paddle boat, wind surfing, etc. ~All staff were polite and some staff spoke English well ~Overall, we recommend this resort if you do Royal Service!!! Notes: ~They do not offer car service. Takes about an hour after plane lands to leave. This is because you go through customs, collect baggage, find bus and wait for everyone else. About a 40 minute bus ride and you are the second hotel. ~Some staff have limited English and literature has some translation errors ~Few or no signs/labels to identify food at buffets ~Main lobby and main buffet are open air. Depending on the weather - it can get hot. Internet is not strong. WiFi is not the same as back home! There are 4 computers in the Business Centre. Internet cards give you an user name and password for an hour. Just keep getting as many cards as you need. You're on vacation so just enjoy being unplugged. Cons: ~Private beach at Royal Service is not as nice as the main beach with the powdery sand. Only a 5-10 minute walk along the beach to main beach. Tips: ~Men need collared shirts and long pants for Romantico and Bella Mar restaurants only ~If you want to partake in the scheduled activities, go through your butler. They are only consistent with morning and evening activities at main area, and activities at family concierge area. ~Exchange money at the airport for best rate. The hotel bank charges an additional service charge. ~Bring lots of suntan lotion, packaged tissues, book, playing cards and small gifts to leave behind. Recommendations: ~We tried all the a la carte restaurants (except Japanese as it was closed when we went). We found the appetizers excellent at all. The entrees were best at Bella Mar and Romantico. For Cuba, the food was good. We loved the seafood. Eat the local and in-season fruit - we loved the mangos. (Don't expect good beef as it tends to be tough.) ~We booked the dolphin excursion at the main lobby for 85 CUCs per person. It includes a 40 minute boat trip to the location and you swim with dolphins for about 30 minutes. There are 2 dolphins per section. They divide your boat into 2 groups and subdivide each group for each dolphin. (It was a new experience for me and I loved it!) Note: you do not need to swim as everyone wears a life jacket. You can also do a Superman trick with the dolphins for a tip of 10 CUCs more. ~If you go to Havana, go when it is cool and see the night activities. Takes about 2 hours each way. Make sure your transportation has air conditioning. Bring CUCs as there is no credit cards at stores. If you go to the market (like an indoor flea market) some vendors will barter. I traded toothbrushes, travel toothpaste, candy, small dolls and makeup for a souvenir. ~If you have time, monitor the prices online as they fluctuate and have a wide price range. Depending on when you go and your patience of monitoring prices, you can get a great deal on Royal Service!
