Over Paradisus Varadero

"Awesome family vacation"
My family of 4 (including a 7 and 4 year old) enjoyed one week at Paradisus Varadero in the family concierge area in May 2017. We had a great vacation! While we didn't use our "butler" very much, only really using her to book dinner reservations, I still would recommend the family concierge area. The buffet in this area is indoors and air conditioned, and always had items that catered to kids. They even have a kids buffet area, that is lower and therefore more accessible for kids to help serve themselves. My kids loved this. The pool in the family area has a large area that is the perfect depth for kids 4+. My 4 year old could easily touch the bottom but it was deep enough to swim. There is also a separate splash pad / kids pool that they enjoyed, with a slide and lots of sprayers. The rooms in the family concierge room are all fairly modern. We had a king + a sofa bed, which worked out great. The sofa bed was close to the floor, great for kids. The bathroom has a huge soaker tub plus a shower stall, and a separate area for the toilet. We never had any problems with water pressure or temperature. The "bungalows" were 3 stories and each had about 18 rooms. Each building or group of buildings has a pool directly in front. This was great for us, even though we were on the third floor and couldn't walk out. I would go up for a shower and to get ready for dinner, and the rest of the family could hang out there until I called down. We did also spend a lot of time at the pool at the main resort, which has really nice shallow entry areas, however we found that it gets deep quickly to a point that the adults couldn't even touch. Kids loved swimming here as well, but we had to be careful to watch that they didn't get into the deep area. The beach at Paradisus Varadero is wonderful. It is quite a stretch of beautiful white sand beach. My only comment here is that we saw a lot of litter on the beach, and we were quite disgusted by people who couldn't be bothered to pickup their plastic cups or cigarette butts and put them in the garbage. The resort maybe needs to do a bit more work cleaning this up as well (though they shouldn't have to). The water was so calm for 6 of the days we were there. There is only a small area with rocks and seaweed, other than that it is a sandy bottom. It was great for swimming with the kids, bad for snorkeling unless you went out far. We did a catamaran ride off the beach out to an area that they take people to snorkel. The "reef" wasn't much to look at really, but there were a lot of fish (numberwise, but not too many different species). The ride out and back was fun for the kids, but mine had never snorkeled before and spent most of the time at the reef on the boat. We didn't leave the kids at the kids club, but did several of the afternoon events, such as the kids birthday party and kids spa. As well my kids participated in the Lion King show, which was a great memory for them. Jennifer and all of the kids club staff were quite friendly and great with the kids. The kids club itself was spacious and had a nice playground. We tried a number of the restaurants including the Mexican, Italian, Japanese, and Fusion. We did the Japanese twice because it was good food and fun for the kids. Juan was our chef and he was awesome! For breakfast we found the buffet had an interesting mix, which contained a lot of dinner items. But we never went hungry. My husband and I had an omelette almost every day. The kids enjoyed the waffles and pancakes, as well as the donuts and pastries (which were delicious). At lunch we mostly went to the poolside snack bars. The hamburgers, hotdogs, pizza and pasta all did the trick. We enjoyed a trip into Varadero commercial center. There is a bus that goes back and forth for $5 CUC / person and you can hope off an on all day. We paid $10 by cab there and $15 back. At only $5 more than the bus, and door to door service, this seemed to be a better deal for us. Had lunch at a little outdoor restaurant, for $2 CUC each. It was delicious and authentic, not a tourist spot. It was on a side street outside of the outdoor mall, next to a few souvenir stands. We also went to a cigar shop in the commercial center, and the kids had fun looking at the toy shops, etc. Our only issue was the mosquitos. We did see a sprayer truck twice, so I know the resort is actively trying to manage this, however we still got many bites. There was bug spray provided with our room toiletries, however I would recommend people bring bug spray and after-bite. I got a number of bites on my legs that were very itchy after I got home. I believe these were sand fleas/flies. We did enjoy walking on the beach in the evening to see the gorgeous sunset, and looking for shells. I believe this was likely when I got the bites, so I would say to avoid the beach after dusk, or at least spray yourself with bugspray first. The sunsets really were the most amazing, so I'd probably do it again, but with the bug spray! We found as well the mosquitos were bad after dinner, after 7:30 or so. Again, bug spray recommended! Overall it was a great trip, and we would happily go back!
I enjoyed this wonderful resort for one week together with my wife. It was our first visit to Cuba, but for sure not the last. The resort is absolutely beautiful, huge, with a lot of entertainment. The beach looks really like an exotic one: white sand, exotic trees, the Caribbean blue. The pools are very clean and depending on your expectation you may find "noisy" places or really chilling ones. There are many activities programmed for each pool. What is really different from other locations we've visited - the live music bands which you can find on the beach, at the pools, at the bar. As long as Cuba really has music - it is gorgeous. The rooms in the Royal Service are very big and very nice decorated with an outside shower and you have your own butler that helps you with anything (reservations, travel tours, etc.). We tried the food in all the buffets and what I can say is there you can find food for all tastes. On top of this, there is a daily barbecue on the beach and it is very tasty - accompanied by salsa guys singing live. The personnel is really nice and very supportive and we really got in contact with many of them (from room maids, butler, waiters, SPA personnel and even the resort's Doctor). As a negative point (minor one): the internet. Even if we got free cards for internet access, the connection was slow but this is not something about the resort - is for the whole island. As a conclusion I definitely recommend this resort but keep in mind this is Cuba, so relax and enjoy! Many thanks to the Doctor, Many thanks to Osmani - our butler and on the top of all Thank you very much, Tiziana - see you next time!
When arriving at the hotel we were very disappointed about the fact, that we did not get the room we booked. Instead of being brought to our room with seaview we were sent from one part of the hotel to the other. We were really annoyed because no one told us that no rooms with seaview were available. After several hours (!) of waiting and discussions with different employees of the hotel finally the General Manager came. He was the only one who told us the truth. He gave us rooms in the new family concierge section of the hotel and looked after us during the whole stay. Thanks to the GM we had some agreeable days in Varadero. However the hospitality of the GM and his kindness are the one thing. The other is that most of the employees are either not willing or not able to care for the guests. We had expected more. Nevertheless in total we say: most improved after a lousy start.
"A week in Paradise with a 7 year old"
We came back from our trip on Wednesday and I want to write the review while it is all fresh on my mind. I booked this resort attracted by the beach. We prefer beaches with shade from the trees, not only from the umbrellas and those are more rare to find. The beach at Paradisus Varadero is perfect if you like to be surrounded by palm trees and have some freedom and space to move your sun beds around, or simply sit on your towel directly on the sand. The beach is wide and deep and you can walk for around 3 km if you wish to, passing by many other resorts such as Iberostar Varadero which is next door, Blau Varadero and a few others that are on the beach. I was worried about the rooms, since many reviews I read mentioned that the rooms in the old part of the resort were hit and miss. We booked an ocean view suite and like many other reviewers wrote, it was well worth it. I posted a photo showing the view from the room to see for yourselves. We tipped the receptionist $20 right away and asked for the best ocean view suite. We were disappointed at first because the room was on the ground floor, but decided to stay in it and in the end we really enjoyed it. The bathroom was newly renovated and very nice. The room was big with dated furniture, but a very nice, large size balcony overlooking the ocean and a beautiful palm tree. We met a family who stayed in the family concierge and visited their room. Being built in 2016, of course this part looks sharp and new and it is more modern. For example in the family concierge you have a USB plug directly in the wall and 120V outlets if you need them. In the old buildings you only have 220V outlets. However, all the modern chargers for your phones, tablets, digital cameras, can be charged at any power between 100V and 240V, so it is usually not an issue. In our family's opinion, the old part of the resort is definitely more beautiful, with more character and very well thought out - the buildings are nice with very large rooms and the landscaping is beautiful too. The resort could definitely use better management. It has a huge potential, and it is absolutely beautiful, with the most beautiful pool I have ever seen, and a lovely, lovely beach. The lobby is beautiful too and the moment you get off the bus that brings you from the airport, you are happy that you will stay at this hotel comparing to all the other ones that have less interesting and inviting main lobbies. The Italian restaurant is very nicely laid out too, with kiosks outside, with 3-4 tables in each, surrounded by water with fish and beautiful plants and lights. It is a pleasure to walk around this resort. One of the buffet restaurants is in the old part and it is completely outside. You sit at the table and eat while looking at the ocean. What else can you ask for? However there are a lot of birds feasting from the tables and many flies. We stayed at two other resorts before that had outdoor restaurants and I don't remember so many flies and birds. I am not sure what can be done, but there might be something. The other buffet restaurant is in the family concierge area and the food is better there, there is definitely more variety. The food was generally bland and repetitive. In our case, it did not matter. There is plenty of food and nobody is left starving. You can definitely find something to eat at every meal and probably eat more than you need anyway so don't let this stop you form choosing Cuba as your destination. The beaches are indeed outstanding. I liked the fact that the 24 hour restaurant was not a buffet. While more convenient for people, a 24-hr buffet likely wastes a lot of food. Here you had to sit at a table and order from a menu, which was better if you care about wasting food and eating only how much you need. What I liked about their shows was that every evening they happened in a different location - once they brought everyone around the pool and they had swimmers perform in the pool, another evening they had acrobats and dancers in the main lobby and all around it, other times it was on the stage. The music in this resort is beautiful everywhere - in the main lobby, in the restaurants, on the beach - be it live band or not. Very nice ambient or Cuban music. We loved the live band that came to the beach every day. All in all, a beautiful, beautiful resort, one we would come back to, with huge potential. I hope it will be maintained well and renovated in the areas that need renovations and always look after those gorgeous palm trees on the beach and all around the resort. They made our trip!
"Family vacation in April 2017"
First i would like to thank the hotel to bump us to Family Concierge. The room at FC was spacious and fairly new. This is my first trip to Cuba and certainly this will not be my last trip to Cuba. At first i was a bit skeptical to go to Paradisus because of some negative comments. I can assure you this is not what me and my family experienced at Paradisus. We had a memorable time. The food was really decent more than average, i would rate it 8 on 10. The chicken, beef or pork all tasted better than at home. Food quality at the Family Concierge buffet and even at the main buffet was well above average. Lots of fresh guava, mango, papaya everyday. A variety of fish fillet was available everyday. Service was excellent. Would like to thank Eugenio, Daileny, Janis and other waitresses (might have misspelled their names) at Family Concierge buffet to make my time at Paradisus memorable. Want to thank LLanelis who cleaned our room spic and span. Please say a special hi to them for me specially to Daileny. They even taught me how to dance Latino. The friendliness of these staff make me want to come back again. Service was very good. Bar is opened 24 hours. White beach and the blue water is among the best i ever seen. 10 on 10. In general all the staff were very friendly and helpful. Shows were good, and the daily beach barbecue was good. If you return late at the hotel after a day's excursion, there is a 24 hour snack where you can order hamburger, fries etc. Food and drink are plentiful. Only one con is the internet. It is one CUC fifty for one hour and the signal is not that great. Definitely this is one area that needs improvement. Would definitely come back to Paradisus if i go back to Varadero. You can't go wrong by going to Paradisus. I highly recommend Paradisus Family Concierge. Kudos to the staff at Family Concierge buffet. I miss them.
